Teo goes yard for his first in the world series.

Low hanging fruit, not good defensively, etc, etc.
There's lot of copium in the evaluation of his play. He is a career 808 OPS hitter. Some people around here act like it's nothing. Springer is a career 818 OPS hitter. In the Bluejays starting lineup this year there was only 3 guys with an OPS of over 800 in career. Vlad, Springer and Turner. One of them was 39 and another 35. He has flaws in his game but he's a pretty solid hitter.

During his time in the pitching lab, the Yankees dove into some of the inefficiencies of his mechanics. They juxtaposed his delivery from 2021 against where he was at that moment, broke down what was leading to the variances and created a regimen of drills to correct the issues.

“A lot of it was lower-half based and the timing of where my hips were and my foot plant,” Mayza says. “Being able to see it in the lab and pair it with here's what it looks like in a game, you just get to work with trial and error. Throw a pitch, see if that's what it was, a lot of back-and-forth with throwing pitches, looking at video, deep dives.”

The tools at the Yankees’ lab aren’t very different than those the Blue Jays have — both “provide what I feel like is similar information,” he says — but “the way it's communicated is a little different from the Jays side to the Yankees.”

Mayza’s velocity ticked up with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he had far less variance during his month-and-half in New York, with a corresponding improvement in his results. In 18 innings across 15 games, his ERA was 4.00, allowing 18 hits and three walks with 12 strikeouts, making him a useful piece for a team with designs on winning it all.

“It's been exciting because obviously competing against Timmy over the last few years, he's been one of the core pieces to the Jays bullpen, he's had a lot of success,” says Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “When we got him, kind of taking a flyer on him when he got DFA’d, he worked a lot with our pitching group and in the lab trying to get some of that stuff back that's been a hallmark of his success. We saw some of that stuff tick up. When he got the opportunity and got called up with us, he did a nice job. He's become an important member down there.”

What lies ahead beyond the World Series is uncertain.

Mayza, 32, has one final year of arbitration eligibility remaining but platforming off a $3.59 million salary this year, he’s a candidate to be non-tendered. If he does re-enter the market again, he’ll do so under far better circumstances than he did in the summer, after the Blue Jays cut ties with him.

“It was tough. It was emotional for me. It was emotional for my family, leaving the franchise and the team that drafted me and was able to give me my first shot in the big-leagues and saw the development throughout,” Mayza says. “The Jays hold a special place for me and a special place for my family. We really became part of that city. I know this game's a business and I'm willing to be honest with myself in that I didn't pitch great. When you don't pitch well there's a chance that your job's at risk and they ultimately made the decision to move on.

“I was fortunate that I was able to latch on with the Yankees, make some adjustments and get back here and contribute in any way possible, getting back to the way I know how to pitch and help these guys out.”

I meant to have this up earlier tonight but it turned out that making/eating/cleaning up dinner took longer than anticipated.

In honor of the world series starting yesterday and because I haven't done one of these in a while, I'm embarking on a slightly more ambitious multi-day version of hte vintage baseball radio posts that I did before. This time to present something timely:

A Yankees-Dodgers World Series. From 1956
This was, of course, the Brooklyn Dodgers against the Yankees and I believe it was the 7th of their now 12 clashes in the World Series. Why did I pick this series? Well, besides just having the two current WS teams and a heck of a lot of notable players, there's also some history to be had in this series. But we'll get to that a little later on.

Unfortunately it does not appear that game 2 audio is available anywhere, but I do have links to the rest of the series with every or almost every game in full.

Game 1 took place at Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn on Wednesday, October 3rd, 1956 and featured the following lineups:

Yankess
1) Hank Bauer (RF)
2) Enos Slaughter (LF)*
3) Mickey Mantle (CF)*
4) Yogi Berra (C)*
5) Bill Skowron (1B)
6) Gil McDougald (SS)
7) Billy Martin (2B)
8) Andy Carey (3B)
9) Whitey Ford (SP)*

Dodgers
1) Jim Gilliam (2B)
2) Pee Wee Reese (SS)*
3) Duke Snider (CF)*
4) Jackie Robinson (3B) *
5) Gil Hodges (1B)*
6) Carl Furillo (RF)
7) Roy Campanella (C)*
8) Sandy Amoros (LF)
9) Sal Maglie (SP)

*Denotes an eventual Baseball Hall of Fame member. Sandy Koufax was also on the Brooklyn roster but did not pitch in the series, and Don Drysdale will appear in a later game in the series

If you want to be spoiled, the box score for this game can be found here

As always, if you want to be notified of future radio posts, just leave a like for this one.

I'll post game 3 one day this weekend. Either tomorrow (Saturday) or Sunday. And at an earlier hour.

Thank you

It's game 3 in the real world, but for the flashback World Series I'm on to posting Game 4 (though it is the 3rd game that I'm posting since game 2 has no audio)

We'll start with the video:

(Note: In spite of the identical thumbnail to the youtube video for the game 3 broadcast, this is actually game 4 this time. I listened to the beginning and they do explicitly announce that it is the fourth game in the series. I think after this one we go back to the other channel that hosts most of the vintage baseball broadcasts and generally seems to be a lot better at quality control on their uploads.)

And the box score can be found here

As for the background:

The game happened on October 7th, '56 and was the 3rd game in 3 days (the only break was between games 1 and 2)

The pitching matchup pits Yankees pitcher Tom Sturdivant against Carl Erskine for the Dodgers. Though not a hall of famer, Erskine is remembered for establishing a record for strikeouts in a world series game with 14 during the 1953 fall classic (That number would later be topped by Bob Gibson striking out 17) and for authoring a pair of no-hitters during his Dodgers career in the 1950s. (He only ever played for the Dodgers and his career almost entirely overlapped with the 50s, running for 10 seasons from 1949 to 1959) This is Erskine's first appearance in the series.

Sturdivant, meanwhile, pitched 2/3rds of an inning in game 2 and gave up a run on 2 hits as the Yankees were scrambling to find some way to keep the Dodgers offence in check. He began his career with 5 years in pinstripes, but injuries limited his overall effectiveness and he became a journeyman and he ended up suiting up for 6 other teams after leaving the Yankees, including the Red Sox and the then-new New York Mets (his sole season with the Mets was his final one in MLB and was the Mets' 3rd season since entering the league in 1962)

So what does a Vladdy contract extension even look like? Would it have a bunch of opt outs, and other conditions? Or just a straight 10 year deal or however many years? I think I would prefer a 10 year deal. 330 M x 10? Devers re-signed with Boston for a similar deal.

What about Bo? Will there be a trade this winter? Or sign him together with Vladdy? I would like him to sign together with Vladdy but I don’t know how much would that cost. He did say he wants to win with Vlad. Before this past season, how much does a consistent .800 OPS close to .300 average SS cost? Jeez, it’s gonna be complicated. Look at what Witt Jr. signed for, how can Bo ask for more?

If they keep Bo going into next season, with no extension in place, are they ok with letting him walk to FA? Assuming there is a bounce back season by him and the team is good (meaning they won't be sellers). I don’t think he would sign mid season this close to free agency anyhow. Bottom line, I would like to keep Bo and Vlad together for many years to come.

The current World Series could end tonight, but the historical one soldiers on with Game 5. And mild spoilers: THIS ONE IS A BIG DEAL.

Here's the broadcast:

Your pitching matchup or this game sees Dodgers game 1 starter Sal Maglie go against Yankee starter Don Larsen, who started game 2. The lineups themselves feature no other significant changes.

Here's your linked-to-prevent-spoilers box score

And fuller spoilers, there's a reason this one is worth a listen:

Don Larsen throws the first and only perfect game in World Series history.

EDIT:

I have also found a partial TV broadcast of the game (the first inning of the broadcast is missing and MLB considers it lost, but this video has put in the radio broadcast for the missing part until the TV picks up.)

It's going in spoiler tags because the name of the video spoils the nature of the game.

According to the "experts", the Blue Jays should sell Vlad Jr. to the Yankees immediately, 'cause they can't afford him. Apparently, a couple of "top 10" baseball prospects ought to do it.

Vlad is going know where unless he wants to .
They will open the cheque and say how much , they need him to sell seats and private boxes.
They spent 400 million on upgrades.

Getting this up early because I gotta go make dinner in a bit.

The WS continues tonight and so does my throwback radio World Series, with 1956 Dodgers/Yankees game 6

From October 9, 1956 at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, the Dodgers find themselves on the brink of elimination, having taken 2 games at home before losing all 3 in Yankee Stadium, including getting completely blanked last time out in Don Larsen's perfect game (spoilers for the last game. That's why I said it was big/important). Can they come back and force a 7th game? Or is this the final piece of a Yankee victory. Obviously you'll know if you know history or look it up, but I'll leave it unaddressed for now.

And here's the box score for that game (again linked in-text to prevent spoilers)

There are no big lineup changes for either team and the pitching matchup sees two pitchers who have yet to appear in this series go up against each other as Bob Turley takes the mound for the Yankees (he went 8-4 with a 5.05 ERA in 21 starts for New York this season. A bit of a downswing after having been an all-star the prior two seasons) against Clem Labine for the Dodgers (Labine was a 1956 all-star on the back of a 10-6 record and 3.35 ERA pitching in a relief role that saw him rack up 115.2 innings in 62 appearances, making just 3 starts vs finishing 47 games that he was called into and retroactively earning 19 saves. Someone also put him on their NL MVP ballot as he earned 1 point the voting scores, tying him for 30th.)

While I've got that BRef page up I might as well go down the 1956 awards roll:

The AL MVP was Mickey Mantle by unanimous choice. This is not surprising given that he won the triple crown and lead the league in average (.353), HR (52), RBI (130), runs scored (132) and though nobody at the time would've known, OPS (1.169) and WAR (11.2, which was like double almost anyone else on the voting leaderboard). The only reason he didn't win the slash line triple crown of AVG/OBP/SLG is because Ted Williams beat him in the OBP race by .015 points.

The top 5 on the ballot were Mantle, Yogi Berra (also NYY), Al Kaline, Harvey Kuenn (both DET), and Billy Pierce (CWS)

The NL MVP was Brooklyn pitcher Don Newcombe probably because he won a league-best 27 games (27-7 record) with 268 IP, a 3.06 ERA, 0.989 WHIP, and 139 Ks against 46 BBs

It was a close-ish race though as he captured 66% of the vote share over 54% for the runner-up, his teammate Sal Maglie (Maglie is listed on the ballot for Brooklyn, but he actually pitched 2 games for Cleveland to start the season before being traded to the Dodgers seemingly just for cash (the transaction record is that he was "purchased". Semi-ironically he would be waived by the Dodgers late in the 1957 season, whereupon he would be picked up by his opponent from this World Series, the Yankees.)

In fact, 3 of the top 5 vote-getters for the NL MVP were pitchers, with Newcombe (1st), Maglie (2nd), and Warren Spahn (Milwaukee Braves, 4th) joined by 3rd place finisher Hank Aaron (also Milwaukee NL) and another Brooklyn Dodger (Jim Gilliam)

for the stats-included, the NL WAR leaders were Duke Snider and Willie Mays with 7.6 and they finished a distant 10th and 17th (!) respectively.

There was only one Cy Young award in this time, not one for each league. So the lone winner was Don Newcombe, beating out Maglie and the tied 3rd place of Whitey Ford (NYY) and Warren Spahn. While granting him the MVP but not the Cy would've been bonkers, this does still seem to be on the back of his w/l record and not much else as his only other categorical leads over them are in WHIP and total walks allowed.

The AL rookie of the year was an almost-sweep for White Sox freshman Luis Aparicio, notching 22 of the 24 1st place votes. The other two votes were split between Cleveland's Rocky Colavito and Baltimore's Tito Francona

in the NL the rookie vote was a sweep for Cincinnati's Frank Robinson, who hit 38 HR and led the NL in runs scored.

Dodgers didn’t score fewer than four runs in 5 World Series games. Can this Jays management prioritize some offence please?

The trashbag Yankees fans who interfered with Betts last game were only banned for tonight's game and got their money back for game 5 tickets. And media dopes and other people are celebrating him like some folk hero.

Poetic and a good bit of justice that Betts drove in the winning run.
