I like Calvin Ridley a lot, but this screams getting overpaid because he's the best option on the market.

He's going to get paid line a #1 when in reality he's a 2.
He’s definitely getting paid like a #1 and I don’t think he’s that but he’d be the best WR they’ve had in a few years and they desperately need somebody with talent

I like Gabe Davis too. Inconsistent but big/fast and great deep threat

Does this approach EVER work in the NFL? Ever? What did it get the Pats the last time they did this? A 10-7 record and an embarrassing playoff lost followed by two straight losing seasons.

I mean... they're roughly $90 million under the cap.

They've got to spend it on someone.

I don’t have a problem with them spending, it has to go somewhere. If it doesn’t everybody will just bitch about how Kraft is cheap. They just have to make the longer commitments to the right people (like they did with Judon and like they did not with a few others like Jonnu)

Giardi says they’ll be heavily involved in the trade market at WR too

No player is a guarantee, look up the stud WRs in the NFL and their draft selection spot, you can find them all over the draft.

You can't say the same for QBs

You're right, no player is....but if you look back at the last 20 drafts, a WR taken top 5 had a better success rate.

Ja'Mar Chase
Corey Davis
Amari Cooper
Sammy Watkins
AJ Green
Calvin Johnson
Braylon Edwards
Larry Fitzgerald
Charles Rogers
Andre Johnson

The worst guy was Rogers and he ended up having a issue with prescription drugs and done after 3 seasons.

Now here's a list of QB's taken Top 5 over the same time:

Bryce Young
C.J. Stroud
Anthony Richardson
Trevor Lawrence
Zach Wilson
Trey Lance
Joe Burrow
Tua Tagovailoa
Kyler Murray
Baker Mayfield
Sam Darnold
Jared Goff
Carson Wentz
Jameis Winston
Marcus Mariota
Blake Bortles
Andrew Luck
Cam Newton
Sam Bradford
Matthew Stafford
Mark Sanchez
Matt Ryan
JaMarcus Russell
Vince Young
Alex Smith
Eli Manning
Phillip Rivers
Carson Palmer

The guys drafted last year are to new to evaluate in this list. Russell, Sanchez, Bradford, Bortles, Wentz & Darnold are bust. Lance & Wilson are flirting with being bust as well. Vince Young had a good rookie season and then fell off. Winston & Mariota have just hung around in back-up roles waiting for someone to get hurt.

For me its not very often that you have a WR whose in the discussion for a Top 5 pick. Its even more rare for a WR to have the talent to go Top 3 in the draft. In the last 20 years the WR's I bolded were Top 3 picks. 2 of them are HOF and 1 (Fitz) will be a HOF. Edwards carved out a decent career while Rogers busted because he got addicted to pain medications

Daniels probably going to Washington

They got some good pieces at WR

Williams & Daniels look like high probability of success - I hope so makes the game that much better

There are no sure things

I like Fields and apparently so does his teammates and coaching staff - that’s huge

Right now I’d take Maye if other two gone - Marvin Harrison a luxury item they need a lot

Being retired I watch a bleep load of nfl network shows and lot of nfl front office and players liked Maye all along

Would they be better off, long term with one of the OL and top 3 WR after MH?

Do Patriots keep Zappe till camp or release now

I like him but can’t be in room with Daniels or Maye

This years draft is very deep with good WR's. We can pick up a good starter on day 2 or day 3. Add a nice free agent like Ridley. I would rather pick a QB at 3 vs MHJ or Nabers, who some experts like more than MHJ. Signing HH to a deal was key too, he has always been a consistent TE.

Doesn’t matter if you have Jerry Rice & Randy Moss if you don’t have QB to me
100 percent agree, as long as the QB has time to throw the ball. Pick a QB at 3, revamp the O line and we will be better shape.

This is exactly how things go wrong in the NFL every year.

I mean, yes, they have to spend it somewhere, but paying a #2 WR #1 money never ever goes well. If they're going to load up and overpay for just one or two years, fine, but I doubt that's what happens.

Unless they absolutely don't believe in the guy available at #3, which is most likely Maye, and trade back, the answer is no.

It won't matter who the WRs are, or how good the line is if the QB is poor.

I think so, yes.

This is a 2-3 year rebuild. The priority should be to accumulate as many elite OL/WR assets over the next couple of seasons and then find the QB.

I think we’re just setting up Daniels or Maye to fail with the pieces on this team and we’re going to be in the exact same spot in 3 years. I’d much rather build like the 49ers, Eagles, or Lions have over the last few years than just praying you find the next Mahomes in the draft.

My fear is we’re about to go down the road of being the Jets just picking a new QB in the top 5 every 3 years.

The Pats sitting at three don’t control their own destiny. It would be a real shame if they reach for a quarterback just because the guy they want is already gone. I want zero to do with Maye. I think he’s going to be a massive bust.

That’s called the Alvin Harper effect for all you old timers. Paying a 2 number one money never makes him a number one. It just makes him overpaid.

And you have some actual receivers who can get open and catch the ball. Patriots receivers had some of the worst separation numbers last year

Lot of solid interior offensive line options in free agency if they want to add a guard. Sow was playing pretty well at guard by the end of the season.

Working under the assumption they're drafting a QB at 3 my focus would be on making the OL as good as possible immediately. Don't want your rookie under siege.
Totally agree with you. We need to re sign Onwenu ASAP. The UFA market for the O line is not good. Draft one in round 2 or 3 and maybe another one in round 5 or 6? We seem to have good luck picking O line players in the later rounds ( Sow and Onwenu).

Agree entirely.

My only thinking is that the OL and WR also need improving. They aren’t winning a SB this year, so it you can significantly upgrade two spots with one pick, maybe go that route and look to find your QB later or elsewhere.

I caught the tail end of Pioli mentioning Pennix for them today.

Regardless of what they do, I’m actually looking forward to the draft and season, which I really wasn’t last year.
