I don’t really agree. They didn’t have to move him at the deadline they could have done something in the offseason. Didn’t have to retain for six years(lol) and didn’t have to give up picks when they are rebuilding
Idk… In this cap world his contract at his age is a problem. So getting a 1st and a really good C prospect is good. But you also have valid points. The whole trade is wild to me.

Something that I feel like is worth pointing out, the Avs were able to make all the upgrades and moves they made over the last couple of days without really moving a single prospect from the system. The only guy they did move was Hanzel, and they basically just swapped him for another very similar level prospect.

They still managed to hang onto Ritchie(Who seemingly they and other teams around the league hold in very high regard), Goulash, Kovalenko, Malinski, Behrens, Foudy, Olausson, etc. It gives them a chance to find some additional cheap depth from within the system next year.

And, while they did move out quite a few draft picks, they also did a good job of recouping some of those lost picks as well. We still have our 2024 1st, we dont have our 2024 2nd or 3rd... But then we have our 4th, two 5ths, a 6th, and two 7ths. So overall they still managed to hang onto 7 total picks for this years draft.

We know CMac has mentioned in the past that they felt it was important to try and rebuild the pipeline a little bit, and it feels like they're going to be able to continue to do that with 7 picks this summer including a 1st still. They're gonna give the scouting department a real chance to find some talent that could maybe prove pivotal in pushing the window open an extra couple years if they can hit big on even just 1 or 2 of the picks.

I also wouldn't be surprised, especially if Landy does come back and is looking healthy at the end of the playoffs... They're probably gonna have to move a guy or two off the roster for picks again due to the cap situation.

They were stuck with an albatros and got 2 first rounders for it

They did good
Those retention slots are valuable, especially for a rebuilding team. It would be one thing if this was their first, but that was the third one they used. They have no slots for next year, and 2/3 slots are in use for three more years! That's brutal. There are always going to be potential players to sell, but good luck selling them to contenders when in this cap era it usually requires retention. You can't be used as a third party brokerer any more, you can't re-sell cap dumps by retaining on them etc.

If you are going to retain for SIX f***ing years, at least get properly compensated for it. That Hertl contract is not an issue in a team that's going through a complete rebuild, they need to reach the cap floor somehow anyway. If you think they win by just clearing that then ok, I don't mind that opinion, but if you use a retaining slot for that long it's counterintuitive. You have severely tied up your hands when it comes to getting asset capital, which is kinda the point of rebuilding.

Yep $1 for six years would be a bad move for a team.

I'm wondering now if the Avs put in a claim for Lagesson but got beat by the lower standings Ducks. Would have been a nice sneaky depth insurance grab.

Either way I'm guessing something fell through both on the G and D fronts, since there's no way a GM going on and on about playoff depth would roll with Jones/Malinski as your 7/8

Agree, the 2024 draft should be fine given that they still have 7 picks total. But 2025 looks brutal with only 4 picks and none until pick 120 or so.

Guessing they'll try to recoup some picks for 2025 through offseason trades, one idea being to ship Manson off while re-signing Walker. The Rantanen pending UFA situation looms large as well, as does Georgiev's status as the no.1. Whatever the case 2025 could definitely use a top 100 pick or two.

I prefer Mittelstadt to Hertl, personally.

One is a long term solution at 2C, and the other is 30-years old. I also think Mittelstadt’s best hockey is in front of him, not behind him.

Maybe Vegas catches fire when they get bodies back, but this is pretty much their last shot with the age of their core.

It's not even remotely comparable. Byram had been absolutely awful for us this year. Walker is a significant upgrade on his play.

Man Bo was having an absolutely terrible year this year. Almost makes you wonder if he knew this was coming for a while and was coasting. Those numbers are very unlike what we've seen from him in past seasons.

Could have picked up Bjornfot before he got claimed by Florida. Think he would have been a solid depth Dman with some upside still.

I love Cogs, but as another poster mentioned, his days as a regular could be numbered.

I didn’t think that was possible pre-deadline, but he’s not as good of a PK’er as a guy like Duhaime, he doesn’t have the offence of Parise, and Trenin is a better overall player.

I’d say Kovalenko might pass him on the depth chart too as he offers a bristly game with more upside and they definitely want to give him a shot.

I think the Mitts deal fits with the Avs management philosophy a lot more than the Hertl deal. They don’t want to get locked in long term on older players, it was one of the reasons why they didn’t commit on Kadri when he was a known fit. It’s clear this management team wants to be good long term and not just a brief window. I think Mitts has room to grow as well, really liked a lot of what I saw from him yesterday.
