Maybe do some due diligence on BA and his scouting and drafting record. While you are at it check out the people he hired and their draft record.
What have you done lately, it's like hiring Bob Dylan for your vocal coach and saying you will be a rock star.

I would say that it’s a good idea to look at the picks they were criticized for. Guenther was a no brainer. He still is. But they took a lot of flack for Doan and Moser. Even from me. Both are exceeding expectations by a lot. They took heat from the online scouts and from me for Lamoureux. He’s exceeding my expectations by a lot. Simashev and But shocked the world and everyone piled on.
Great points with Guenther, Doan and Lamoureux. Lamoureux I believe might be his top pick. Still not sold on Simashev or But but time will tell.

You never know if we could of traded down.

May I ask why you believe this? I know the pretty suits but besides this what examples can you give that says he's a rock star? Wanting to drink the cool aid :)
We went off the board for JJ Moser and Doan. Moser already a legit top 4 D in nhl playing big minutes on a talent starved defense.

Durzi acquired for a 2nd. Has taken a huge step in his overall game in AZ.

Just 2 more names to add.

What have you seen in Simashev and But’s games that makes you skeptical?
Only highlights from YouTube. Some are impressive but these were so off radar picks. So many players I still would of picked before them. Hopefully time will prove me wrong. High risk, high reward but with tanking I would of picked a more safe pick. I believe these guys would of been there 20 to 25. We could of played a competitive season and still took these players.

Good players.. could be, worth tanking over I don't know.

Not sold on Moser yet, on an average team I believe 5 or 6 Dman. Durzi could be something, really been enjoying his game.

To add Pellikka and Dvorsky would of been my picks :)
Well...I'm glad you're not the GM then! Haha, the last thing we need is a small offensively minded defenseman and an all rounder who isn't particularly elite at any one thing and has solid IQ and instincts and good two way play.

I absolutely hated Moser pick at the time, thought the Doan pick was just okay and was basically nepotism, and Simashev and But both came out of nowhere and neither were guys I had on my radar, especially after we had the chance to take Michkov.

So far all of those guys have vastly exceeded expectations bar maybe Doan, who still looks like he could be ready next year. Simashev and But are smashing the KHL in their D+1. But is arguably doing as good as Michkov if not better.

Moser absolutely does not top out as a bottom 2 d-man #5/6 on a good team. That would be a huge disappointment considering what we've seen from him so far. He's already a pretty competent top 4 D. Nothing special, but he's still very very young. He's been in the league 3 years, most guys at his draft position don't even make it to the league at his age now, let alone at 20.

He’s a late 2nd. 60th overall. Already 2nd most games played from that draft. If u added the games played from everybody taken after him combined you get 31 games total. Moser had played 176.

Could be because I am judging those two players against Pellikka. I truly believe he's going to be a number one Dman in just a couple of years. What could have been lol.

Like I said hopefully I am proven wrong.

I was livid when we drafted Simashev at 6 ( I thought he was the best D based on limited viewing) But after really watching all of the videos I could I felt better.

I wanted Leonard or Benson .. I was happy when mTRL drafted Reinbacher, thinking yes here we go! Leonard at 6 Simashev at 12

The thing that bothered me though was how BA said “always draft BPA , not by position”

Then after the first round was over, one of the scouts said “we got our positions filled, now we are free to draft at any position BPA etc…

I actually think we took the 2 names that were at the top of our list but they also knew who was going to who and that our list differed significantly from what most litsts had. They did draft bpa in their minds but knew they were going to get tons of backlash. I love the size and like what i have been seeing so far. I will also be prepared to be critical if they don’t meet expectations of their draft slots. Simishaev needs to be a 20-25 min a night top 4 D.

Benson is incredible too.
I had Benson 3rd or 4th on my list but was 100% sure he’d drop to our second pick. So my plan was to take Leonard 6th and they Benson 12th. Even though I had Benson rated earlier than Leonard.

I agree 100%.

Luckily, I believe Simashev will be K’Andre Miller and I believe But will be a meaner Alex Tuch.

Still loads of hockey to play, but with the Sens win and our loss we've moved into the 5 spot.

I've been poo-pooing the idea that Bill could draft Silayev. It felt impossible when our team didn't lose every game. But now they do and so drafting Silayev feels more possible and almost probable.

I do wonder about how much Russian risk were willing to take. There’s a lot of eggs in that basket already.

I feel a hell of a lot more comfortable drafting another with a couple that are probable to make the roster tbh. But also agree very much with this. I still think it was a big factor in taking two in the 1st last season. Let them have some fellow country men to make them more comfortable in the desert.

There is no way I take a Russian this draft, unless they would be available to play in NA next year.

I've got Levshunov 3rd and Silayev is outside the top 5 for me.

His skating isn't as good as Simashev's, and what I see is a better Tyler Myers...but again, I'll trust the scouts if it is our pick.

Simashev's skating is 'great' for any height...Silayev is a good skater for his height
