What if we took a 2nd year eligible player with our 1st pick, in the teens.
He had an extremely solid game today against Canada. I was very impressed. He showed he’s got a long stick that he’s very active with and can really break up plays. He’s got the length and stride to gap up quick. Showed a good physical edge. Likes the rough stuff and can intimidate.

And also showed some nice offensive flashes in a game where his team had very few. He was so slick on that 2nd Finland goal late in the game. He took that roughing minor right after but Bonk hit him first and it was a total sell job. I didn’t hate it.

He made a couple of mistakes early in the game but I like how hard he worked to make up for it in it right after.

Thought Finland’s PP was garbage and their forwards struggled on the point, I thought. Would love to see Pulkkinen on the PP instead.

I like him very much but I'd be disappointed with him or even Dickinson. Any LD is gonna be a letdown for me.

There's really only 3 LD slots on a hockey team and I'd be happy if Moser, Simashev, Szuber, Kolyachonok, Duda and Valimaki fill those slots.

I'm on the Letourneau bandwagon.

agree with this...Moser is already playing well, Simashev and Szuber are coming...the only dude on the right side is Maverick and so we really need more on that side.

That Stian Solberg for Norway was really great today, too. I fell in love with Maxim Strbak’s game at this tourney last year. I think it’s Stolberg this year for me. Really impressive. Again, Left Shot D.

I’m not counting unhatched chickens. Been there, done that.

There’s even a lot of wingers I’m really REALLY liking in our range. Brandsegg-Nygard, Chernyshov, and Iginl to name a few.

I know we have more holes than just RD...I'm just saying that over the next couple drafts, getting more prospects of the RHD variety would help secure a current weak spot in the ranks

No doubt. But gotta go BPA in Rd.1 if it’s clear cut. Not gonna put all my eggs in the Moser (concussed and not top-pairing, Simashev in Russia, Duda not even playing, Valimaki healthy scratched waiver claim, Szuber never played an NHL game and Kolyachonok mystery box. It’s ok to keep adding. I’m also hoping for the best on these guys. But if LD is clear BPA then I hope we take him.

All things being equal, give me RD all day.

Fine... I'm convinced. Let's draft an overager with our 1st. Kmec is finally breaking out, let's get him before someone else does.

Looks like Adam Jiricek will miss the rest of the tournament after that nasty fall and apparent knee injury yesterday. This after that really awful looking concussion earlier this year already cost him a lot of games.

He’s likely to fall, especially given his struggle to produce in the top men’s league in Czechia. Might be a good mid-first-round gamble for a wild-card team. He’s a boom or bust for sure. He’s easily got the potential to be the best D in the draft. Big bust potential too. Scary gamble.

You’d basically be throwing out his whole draft year and picking based on what you saw last year. Not only that but gambling on his health. Not sure anyone will do that in the top 12-15. But if we’re 16-17 or so? Maybe?

Hopefully Jiricek is healthy by May and ready to tear the U18s apart.
Or maybe that would work against the Coyotes, who have already spent time watching him?

We’re in the 17th draft slot according to P% today.

I feel like this is such a winger heavy zone for this draft. A bunch of wingers I really like, but wingers nonetheless. Could see Jiricek falling, depending on how long it takes him to recover and what he does at the u18s.

I think this range right now looks too early to reach for most of the blueliners outside of Levshunov, Silayev, Dickinson, Yakemchuk, Buium, etc. Maybe Parekh could fall to this range? I think Kiviharju might end up more of an early 2nd.

Here’s a fantasy; Jiricek drops to us at 16th. San Jose decided to finally collect some draft capital and accepts our latest two 2nds for pick 33rd, where we grab Kiviharju.

Solberg averaging over 25min for the tournament lead in avg TOI. Mark Edwards and hockey prospect (the guys who had But and Simashev rated very early ahead of the draft and raved about our selections) have Solberg at 19th on their Christmas, Pre-WJC rankings. He’s been great so far in this tourney. Big, mobile and very mean. BA type. If we’re picking 16th or 17th maybe it’s not crazy.

Man I hope Norway beats Latvia in the relegation game on the 4th. That Swiss game was really unfortunate. Norway playing 4 in 5 and their goalie really just letting in a couple of demoralizing softies after some major coaching mistakes on that first 5min major PP. It’s nuts they have wasted Brandsegg-Nygard on the right point on the PP all tourney. Insane. He’s by far their most dangerous player and it’s not even close. He should 100% be around the net. And he knew it so he was never back on the point. Hard to watch.

Loving MBN & Solberg, though. Such hard nosed competitors. Would be a shame for them not to be at the tourney next year. I really hope Norway can beat Latvia and come back next year. Love the way Norway plays.

What the hell does this graph mean? Do you know who are the point leaders in this tournament? Who do you compare Celebrini to?
Game score is just an amalgamation of fancy stats tracked by Elite Prospects. Volume stats like shots, shot attempts, shot assists, zone entries and exits, breakups, etc. Basically the quantifiable stuff you can easily track on a Google sheet that isn’t in box scores.

It doesn’t mean nothing but it also doesn’t mean much. If a kid had two secondary assists in a blowout loss, did he have a good game? No way to know that quantitatively. The eye test is king. Always. Anyone who says otherwise has an agenda.

Point leaders in the tourney? You can find that literally anywhere. Just put that phrase in google or Twitter. You’ll have an answer in under one minute.

Celebrini comp? Poor man’s MacKinnon? Maybe not quite as much of a bully. So maybe halfway between a discount MacKinnon and a dollar store Brayden Point? So what is that? A glowed up Dylan Larkin maybe? Bo Horvat on his best day? I’m not good at this.

Coulda had Strbak instead of Hrabal.
Sigh.
Strbak was my guy. Loved that kid last year.

I don't have a good comp for Celebrini...maybe a higher skilled Barzal
I think Mack is a lot more committed to defense and details. But I can see your Barzal point on offense. And that’s where my Horvat comp was actually really bad. Maybe he’s Barzal red-line-in and Horvat red-line-back?

I might be the worst person at comps.

I’ve heard people say that what makes Crosby really unique among the generational legends of the game is that he plays like a 3rd line plumber. Except with elite skill.

Whatever THAT is, I think also defines Celebrini for me. Obviously he’s nothing like Crosby. But that’s why I thought of MacKinnon and Point and Larkin and Horvat.
