Looking at this draft I am liking the idea of selecting Artyom Levshunov with our pick (assuming he is available), he seems like he could be a #1 two way right handed defenseman. Our system has a guy with #1 center potential with Will Smith but is lacking that elite defensive prospect. It seems that Levshunov would fit that role.

Levshunov is who I hope we get if we don't win the lottery.

Let’s hope we can get Celebrini and Pittsburgh gets 11th place next year (though I will take them getting in the top 10 and then utterly collapsing the next year and winning the 1st overall for us).
If that happens or even if it winds up being 3 OA. You gotta wonder if there's some weird magic to trading Karl w/ a first round pick involved, I suppose there could be some way that Hoffman is also involved just to make it that much trickier to reproduce the same results.

Uh oh! It's magic!! :sarcasm:

a 1-2 of Celebrini-Smith is a pretty great combo to build around. If not, one of the big dmen would be a nice consolation. The reality is we’re going to be terrible for at least 3 more years and maybe 5. I imagine there’s at least one top center and 1-2 top d prospects in that timeframe.

Are any of the dmen likely to be NHL ready?

Without a bonafide generational talent expected to go #1, I can't see very many teams throwing games on purpose like they did last season.

I've said before that it's harder to be last in the NHL and get the #1 overall pick than it is to win a Cup, but I think that's gonna be easier than usual this season.

There might not be a crosby or McDavid or even a potential Bedard. But there still is a Fantilli/Carlsson and a Michkov in the top 5 of the draft. Those are still top end prospects.

Tanking teams don't throw games. They just assemble horrible rosters so they can lose without having to intentionally throw games. In addition to us, I think Chicago, Philly, Anaheim, Arizona and Montreal have all done that for this season. We should finish in the bottom five but there are no guarantees beyond that.

Plus you're never sure who's the generational talent at 18. Guys like Bedard are a good bet, but you never know when there's a Makar at #4

Our luck we will come in dead last and then lose the lottery anyway.

Hot take:

Abolish the draft lottery and give the top 5 picks in reverse order

#1 pick to 5th worst
#2 pick to 4th worst
#3 pick to 3rd worst
#4 pick to 2nd worst
#5 pick to worst

So if you're bad then you definitely have a good pick but being worst is literally the worst

Also none of this "oh this team that is really good but got derailed by injuries needs a small chance of getting ANOTHER franchise player just because"

Nah, bottom team of each conference goes into a lottery.

After that, just go by points %

If we can win this lottery then get Patty and Jumbo to put on a full court press to recruit Pavs as a UFA we could have a top six of Eklund-Hertl-Pavelski Celebrini-Couture-Smith next season.

The rest of the team would still be garbage but at least that would be a ton of fun to watch with the chance to level up quickly in the years to come.

Maybe if Pavs had already gotten a cup...doubt this happens

Handshake agreement to trade him to the contender of his choice at the deadline. We’d probably even get a decent pick out of it.

The only way I see Pavs signing a contract to come back to SJ, is if it's a one day contract so he can retire a Shark
As much as it hurts sharks fans but has he actually accomplished more in his time with Dallas than with the Sharks?

4 years vs 13 years. 240 points vs 761 points. 0 cup finals vs 1 finals appearances. Zero awards on either team.

What has he accomplished more so in dallas then San Jose? He is still a secondary player in dallas like he was in San Jose.

Pavs went to the Cup final with Dallas too.

I will not be surprised if Pavelski doesn't ever put on teal again, even for retirement. DW really fractured that relationship. Of course that could change with GMMG at the helm, but there's still Hasso...
