I really think this draft drops off around 13. Here's my rankings before the drop off, I'm hoping we get 2 of these guys if we get the pens pick:

1. Celebrini

2. Levshunov
3. Demidov
4. Dickinson
5. Lindstrom
6. Silayev

7. Catton

8. Yakemchuk
9. Parekh
10. Buium
11. Iginla
12. Eiserman
13. Helenius
Great take. I would argue Catton belongs in the same upper tier as Dickinson

Talent wise I agree. I just think he should be lower on the Sharks board. I would feel more confident having a safe guy like Dickinson and Muhkamadulin as our LD in the top-4 than I would having Smith-Catton down the middle.

Catton is just all offense just like Smith...and he's small. Combined we already have Eklund...we need to diversify the forward core more than just having playmakers.

I’m about half way through a mock draft where worst possible scenario for SJ happened on the mock draft boards (Sharks got 4th overall and PIT stayed in the top 10 so lost that pick). These were my picks.

4. Dickinson - not much to say here everyone knows who he is. If anyone wants me to talk about him I can but figure I’ll save everyone’s eyes.
32 Alfons Freij - 2 way D that has some issues in the defensive zone but has the tools to be better there. Great skater. Decision making questionable but looks like it can be reeled in.
42. Simon Zether - Big, smart, power forward type C. Great vision. Pretty average skater that gets him into trouble at times but he’s good at reading the play and getting ahead of it. I would be surprised to see him as a 20-25 pick come June.
84. Jack Berglund - Dude’s big. 6’ 3 210. Very strong and hard to push off the puck. His offense is a bit of a mirage as a lot of it came from being able to bully his way to wherever he wanted on the ice. He’s a rather low ceiling prospect but hey I said the same thing about Bystedt! I really like his project-ability though. Good defensively and pretty much exactly what you’d want in a good bottom sixer.

Some of these picks came up at weird times so here’s some hindsight picks!

4. Wouldn’t change a thing. You could convince me to take Lindstrom for sure but man I want that legit D prospect.
32.

I have 12 of those 13 in my top 13 and I haven’t been doing enough research on Brent Burns II to rank him.

Freij is an interesting shout. Such a gifted skater.

33 feels like another spot to take a defenseman. Mews, Freij, Emery, Badinka, Elick and more.

Need to dive deeper on them.

Again, HILARIOUS how drastically this outcome vs. getting 3rd-4th OA and not getting the Pens pick changes the future of this franchise.

Yeah, it’s wild. I mean, I think there’s an argument to be made that there’s a pretty good chance that if we don’t get the Pens pick this year, we may be getting a top 10/top 5 pick with their pick next year. But yeah, while we’ll definitely be adding a pretty high end guy no matter what this year, if we miss on Celebrini and don’t get the Pens pick, it’s pretty brutal in the immediate.

Could you tell me how your mock landed you the 4th pick and the 32nd pick? Were we slated with the 2nd to last pick odds and lotto'd down to 4? If so, how did we get 32 when if we're 2nd to last, we should be at 34. Did Ottawa forfeit their pick? So many questions. lol

I just cant see Pens GM underperforming again next year. Its too early for him to tear it down(correct choice or not) and he's too early into the job to not throw everything at the board to make the team better next year.

because I made a typo  should have been 34. We were second worst when the order was locked in and got passed by two teams in the lottery to fall down to 4. Was thinking 42 when typing 34.

I guess my question is, how? If they picked 8th and immediately trade that pick, they might get a guy that’s as good as Guentzel maybe? They have no meaningful prospects and I’m not sure they have the trade chips to get too many higher end guys that can come in and help.

Also, their core gets one year older. To me, they really feel like the Sharks post Blues conference finals defeat. Except if you squinted, you could’ve at least hoped that like Meier and Labanc would take a big step that year and become 1st/2nd line players or something. I’m not sure I see how the Pens improve significantly. I could be wrong though.

I suspect their GM will take another shot at it next year since it's Crosby's last year under contract. With them being six points out of a playoff spot at this stage, they need to find a way to add defensive depth because they're basically a 4 D team, replace Guentzel, and find a way to get more depth scoring. Maybe Yager can do one of those things as what I see as the only player in their system with a chance of being an impact player next season that they don't have there now but 13 mil is going to be tough to fit all that in and some of their expiring depth players. They need to add at least two impact players to make headway on a playoff spot next year and that is looking increasingly tougher to do with so many teams competing right now.

There is zero chance Brayden Yager is an impact NHLer next year, or any other prospect in their system, thankfully for us.

All of these names feel like exciting late-1st early-2nd D. Not likely to blow anyone out of the water but definitely possible to hit as a middle pairing piece. I've heard good whispers about Freij and Badinka from those who follow more closely.

As for the Pens, I think the best possible outcome for their collapse next year is probably like 6-10th worst. They're aging, sure, but their underlying metrics this year aren't bad especially at 5v5. They could even possibly re-sign Guentzel, could add in free agency... I would guess the pick will end up 10-20. Dubas will definitely go for it again. I think they take the top 10 pick this year and try to flip that prospect for a "win now" asset, assuming that the rumor is true that the pick is not tradeable if retained.

Definitely. Just don’t think they should count him in their plans next season.
No they shouldn't but that sort of add is the sort that they'd need to improve next season if they want to do anything with the limited resources they have at this stage. With 13 mil in cap space and a lot of their guys sort of tied up with NMC's and a lost impact player, they'll be lucky to get two impact players externally and they probably need at least three to get back into the playoffs.
