I could have sworn that I read somewhere that a team cannot win the lottery more than once in a five year span. So Chicago can't win again until 2028.

I really hope that is correct.
They cannot move up in the draft via lottery win more than twice in a five-year span. Chicago has done that once, they are eligible to do so once more between now and 2028.

Unfortunately the rule is "Twice". So they can win it again.

If you finish last and you get the #1 pick it does not count against the 2 in 5 year rule. This is an inarguable fact.

It's literally a literacy test that you either pass or fail.
But it’s not an unarguable fact. The whole point of the lottery to prevent the same teams from picking at the top each year. The whole point of the rule change is to prevent the Oilers situation happening again. It doesn’t make sense to have the worst team getting first overall not count.

This is not a perfect explanation but the way I’ve seen it is that the top 2 spots are sort of blank. If you win the lottery you move up to the top blank spot (or move someone up but that’s not the point of this, think we are all in agreement there).

The other thing that is supporting (or clouding) my thought process here is I’ve seen Habs reporters saying that the Habs have one more lottery win for the next 5 years even though they had the worst record 2 years ago (2022 draft)

my understanding was that finishing last and winning #1 counts as a win, but if say Nj wins and can only move up to 4, we still pick 1st but didnt win. The former can only happen twice.

HOWEVER, if following the 2 lottery wins, we still finish last, we can still "win" in the sense of keeping our draft spot (32nd) and pick first, however if we finish 2nd last we are ineligible to win #1 and if we did win, we'd simply keep our spot at 2.

That’s exactly how I understand it. If you finish last and win the lottery it counts as a win but if you finish last and a team from 12-16 wins the lottery, it doesn’t count as a win.

From what I understand as well is if say we win 2 lotteries in 2024 and 2025, and then in 2026 we win again, they’ll just redo the lottery.

"No single team will be able to advance in the Draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two (2) times in any five (5) year period. This limitation will not affect a Club’s ability to retain its presumptive Draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the Club moving down in Draft Order to the extent other Clubs advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws."

I don't see how this is not crystal clear. Finishing last and retaining the #1 pick, whether by virtue of the lottery draw or because the actual winner of the lottery draw was too far down the list, does not count against the limitation.

But it is the NHL's own words, the main words they use when explaining the lottery wins of 2 in 5 years. Are as follows, no team can advance in the draft because of a lottery win and a teams ability to retain there presumptive spot in the draft.

You fighting this shows that you do not like actual facts shown to you from the mouth of the organization that created the rules. You are using your own opinion and thinking that is correct when everything written about the rules is saying the complete opposite of your opinion.

Nobody is arguing a opinion based fight, the ones that aren't agreeing with you (which is basically everyone else that has read the actual rules) is taking the NHL and there rules word for word and putting the words they use into correct use.

Then why are MTL reporters who are much more in the know than our random selfs saying MTL only has one more win?

Then why does MTL who was dead last in 2022 only have one more win?

Probably because they also lack reading comprehension. The rules are right there on the NHL website, it's not like you need to be a reporter with inside sources to obtain this information.

And I get that but I also think I’d trust the reporter with inside sources more than a random Joe Shmoe.

Simple - they're wrong.

Barring some alternative official statement by the NHL, that's the best explanation.

No single team will be able to advance in the Draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two (2) times in any five (5) year period

Advance: "move forward in a purposeful way."

And I get that but I also think I’d trust the reporter with inside sources more than a random Joe Shmoe.
Where's the report you saw? Cause some reporters are random Joe Shmoe's who gain an audience simply due to their content, no matter how relevant or true it is.

And I get that but I also think I’d trust the reporter with inside sources more than a random Joe Shmoe.
And you do realize we have our own resident joe shmoe, that is now a reporter. It takes a little bit of luck or a little bit of who you know and anyone can become a sports reporter.

And these so called sports reporters you want to trust were also the same reporters that at one point voted Ovechkin for both left wing and right wing for end of the year awards.

It's literally on the NHL website

"The 2022 NHL Draft Lottery marked the first year for the implementation of a limit on how many times a team can win a lottery draw. No single team can advance in the draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two times in any five-year period."
"advance". If you are the worst team and get the the #1 pick you have not advanced.

You guys worried about winning twice... it's fixed tho... :sarcasm:

Hawks will win 4 or 5 years in a row, they'll just get rid of the rule after they win the draft lotto this year.
