It would be nice to be lucky, obviously, but you said “Celebrini or bust”, as though getting anyone but Celebrini is a waste. That’s just not true.
Problem is they'd end up with someone arguably a level below Smith regardless. The team needs 2-3 players a few levels above Smith to start even thinking about competing, and I don't see them making 2-3 more Thornton trades.

In terms of not missing the playoffs for another 5 years, it is a bust. There is no doubt in my mind that missing out on Celebrini would cause us atleast another 2 years in purgatory. The difference between #1 and the field is very large this year.
I understand that it would be upsetting to have this awful season and not get a guaranteed star from it. But not getting Celebrini wouldn’t make the season a waste. That’s my point.

I guess it really depends on what you consider a waste of a season is. In my view, leaving this draft with a second liner, and/or a top 4-6 dman is a total waste of a season. Especially when the teams we are going to be competing with get a 1C.

Okay, so what do you want to do about it? Feels like you’re complaining just to complain.

Levshunov certainly has the potential to be much more than a #4 D-man, I wouldn't be that bummed if they drafted him.

The Flyers also thought they were getting a 1C with Nolan Patrick while the Avalanche had to settle for a guy who wasn't even close to as highly regarded at the time.

Good point, you really do never know. TBF Nolan had a piss load of head injuries that derailed his career before it really even began.

While I still really want Macklin I would be very satisfied with Levshunov.

I will feel it is a disappointment if we don’t walk away with one of those two players.

There's no question that Celebrini gives us a corner piece for a true contender in about 5-7 more years. And that anyone else only gives us that in the ceiling case for whatever player. With the likelier outcome that our rebuild will be extended or we will end up with a playoff team but not a contender.

But not everything hinges on Celebrini. The future is unknown and we will still end up with two pieces from this draft that will very likely play a part in the improvement of our team.

Even with Celebrini, we are likely drafting top 5 next year and top 10 for two more. These rebuilds take a very long time. I'll be bummed if we don't get Celebrini, but any of 4-5 other players at that pick could be huge pieces for us.

I want to pick first. I am legitimately just voicing my opinion in a discussion thread about the upcoming draft.
We all want the Sharks to pick first. No doubt Grier does too but even if we finish last that won’t be guaranteed. This year we will burn off a year of bad contracts, retention, and buyout penalties while adding 4 picks in the 1st 2 rounds. I sure hope Celebrini is the cherry on top but even if he isn’t, I won’t consider this a wasted year.

the more I read about Levshunov the more I like him. I think defense/being a little lackadaisical in his own end can be fixed. But his work ethic and drive seems really high. The skill set is definitely alluring.

I would love Celebrini but it’s beyond our control. Ducks didn’t even get Bedard when they had the worst record so whatever will be will be. Our defensive prospect pool is so awful that if we get Levshunov and another high potential guy with the Pens pick, I’ll be thrilled. This is a process and while Celebrini speeds it up a little, we need ALL of these pieces and we’re still sucking for at least another year or two.

He's old for his draft year and his defensive issues seem to be IQ based. If he didn't have a weird background I'd be far less optimistic about picking him. I doubt he becomes more than a 1B type of defenseman so you'd want another top defensive prospect.

The Flyers also thought they were getting a 1C with Nolan Patrick while the Avalanche had to settle for a guy who wasn't even close to as highly regarded at the time.

Makar was rated 1st by quite a few people and publications, he just wasn't a safe pick.

Do you have any examples of this? I've re-read the posts leading up to the draft here, on reddit, hockeynews, and other similar prospect ranking sites. It was Nolan Patrick and Hirschier considered 1/2 and then a crap shoot after that. In fact, Makar wasn't in top 5 in most of them until literally like a month before the draft. (Pronman had him at 18 as late as June 19th, ouch).

I do remember Colorado saying they had him as the #1 ranked prospect years later (which may or may not be true), but nothing that had him close to 1 before the draft.

I feel fans just blindly assume that every player will do whatever it takes and make whatever sacrifice they need to to get a chance at a Cup. But I don't think every player is like that nor should they be expected to feel that way.

Chasing the SC ring doesn't seem to pan out more often that it does. Look at Marleau, Thornton, and then Goodrow. He wasn't chasing a SC ring but was traded to the Lightning and received two.

Tavares window is closing, maybe he will try to chase a ring at UFA if the Leafs don't succeed.

I think Couture is smart enough to calculate the lousy odds and when he hits UFA, he'll be 38. So he probably thinks disrupting his family with moving is not worth the odds.

Somebody here a handful of years ago told me that defensive players generally go in the late 1st round to 2nd round, unless it's one with offensive capability. So I believe that Levshunov and Silayev will probably fall a bit from their current projections in the mock draft sites.

I doubt Levshonov will fall down to the Sharks' pick from PIT because his PP skills, but Silayev just might. He's a better Vlasic than Vlasic, imo.

One of the bigger ones was Pronman.

"While Makar is rated the top North American defenseman in the NHL Central Scouting's rankings, his name hasn't typically been associated with the top overall pick in the draft. Pronman addresses that -- noting the Devils could look to trade down and draft Makar -- and makes his case for the selection."

It's a mock draft based on rumors that the Devils liked Makar, while he had Hirschier and Patrick as his number 1/2 ranked prospects. I'm also sure there will be rumors that some GMs absolutely love so non-Celebrini prospects in this years draft, but that doesn't mean Celebrini isn't the consensus 1st pick.

You know that Levshunov is an offensive defenseman, right?

I’ve been able to tune in to a bit more Levshunov games and really tried to pay as close attention to him specifically as I could. Early season I was not a fan at all. I’ve DEFINITELY come around him. In a way he’s a bit risky because he has a lot of tools but hasn’t fully put it together in a consistent way. At the same time though, I see it now. He’s very interesting. While he’s probably not my number 2 prospect this draft, I’d absolutely be okay with taking him at 2. Those tools are just too much to pass up.

I’ve also fully come around on Dickinson. Basically my opinion on the defense has full changed. I really liked Silayev but he’s fallen a bit for me now. Hopefully we get either Celebrini or Levshunov/Dickinson this draft.

Tough night tank-wise. Hawks lose one of the few home-games where so I expect them to win in regulation and we pick up a point on the road against a team that is a real cup contender.

Personally I am happy for Chrona, especially after his first horrific start, but man…

Edit: Our night just got a little bit better after the Pens collapsed in the 3rd in Cgy

The more I watch Parekh and Buium the more I really like them.

Zeev Buium has some Heiskanen to him, smooth operator; and Zayne Parekh the audacious showtime skill akin Quinn Hughes.

Going to be so fascinating to see how the defenders come off the board because this class is gluttonous for upside.

March rankings (tiers are fluid):

1) Macklin Celebrini

2) Ivan Demidov

3) Zeev Buium
4) Cayden Lindstrom
5) Zayne Parekh
6) Berkly Catton
7) Sam Dickinson

8) Artyom Levshunov
9) Anton Silayev
10) Carter Yakemchuk

Levshunov ranked below Parekh (and honestly Buium even though he's a fast riser) is quite the take. What's the thought process there?

I pretty much don't really like what I see from Levshunov on the ice except for when he's in the offensive zone with puck on his stick (and then he's sublime). I have him and Parekh grouped under the same archetype, Parekh is more explosive though. He's having a special draft season; second OHL eligible defender in history to score 30 goals and he's essentially pacing for 100 points (99) with ten games to go.

I'm skeptical of the two way ability of both Levshunov and Parekh at the next level, Levshunov has more size on him but his motor/IQ at times scares me.

Buium is in a different bracket to me, very good on both sides of the puck. He has the second highest NHLe in this class after Celebrini and he's having one of the most absurd scoring seasons in DY college history. Pretty much better than anyone not named Eichel/Celebrini/Fantilli which is funny to say considering they're star attackers.

To compare him to Vancouver's Norris candidate.

DY Quinn Hughes, Michigan. 5'10 175lbs - 29 points in 37 games +14.
DY Zeev Buium, Denver. 6'0 183lbs - 41 points in 32 games +24.

Buium has a solidly bigger frame than Hughes did and he's good at using it to his advantage to shield the puck in the offensive zone. He also has WJC pedigree under his belt. High praise for him to make the USA team that won gold and he also led the tourney in +/-.

It's fun to watch Buium glide around in the offensive zone all surgical like and pick out passes. He's like the conductor of Denver's orchestra and he'd compose some magic with Halttunen and Musty.

If Sharks wind up with #3 and #12 picks (via Pens) and take Sam Dicksonson with #3 as @Juxtaposer writes, there is a non-trivial chance our #12 pick will have a better NHL career than #3.

Sam Dickinson's likely outcome is a 10+ year Top 4 (middle pairing) D on a good team
If Sharks draft Iginla, Eiserman, or Parekh, etc and those players hit their upsides...look out...
