So I was reading some quotes from Couture the other day, and he said he doesn't want to be traded and wanted to stay here. This is a guy that hasn't won a cup his entire career and he doesn't want to go to a contender to have a last chance to battle for a cup. There's no drive, no ambition. Not sure if that's a leader that what you want your youngsters to look up to.
No concept of loyalty I see

Because the response to him saying I want to go somewhere else so that I can chase a Cup would be met with glowing responses about "this is the guy the youngsters look up to" as well, right?

The responses to Marleau and Thornton doing it showed the fans want it for the players. And now Couture is doing the opposite and is starting to become less liked by the fans then before.

Fans also loved Marleau/Thornton unconditionally while the feeling on Couture has been overall sour since he was named Captain.

Couture was still liked for the first couple years of his captaincy, but once it was 100% sure this team was going into a rebuild and Couture has gotten even more steadfast in his stance that he will not be leaving. So until his injury has taken him basically out of the lineup full time he was not helping the team in the short term and in the long run.

So right now he has left it to the point where fans are hoping his career is now over due to this injury. That way he can't hurt the team anymore.

I mean he was drafted here, has a life here, and is likely receiving the best medical help here while being at home. I’d be surprised if Couture plays more than 80 games for the rest of his career.

I suspect the feeling on Couture turning sour is because the team immediately started to suck. If we had talent and were winning, he'd be beloved.
i dont think any outsider saw him as a leader on the ice. Its not sour, its just that nobody sees captain material in him.

Could be completely different in the locker room

I do like the idea of clearing out the entire leadership group - trade Ferraro and Hertl, Couture to permanent LTIR - and going with 3 alternate captains for a few years until one of Smith, Eklund or hopefully Celebrini or another top draft pick emerges as captain.

I disagree completely. I would keep all 3 as long as they want to be here. Good leadership to sheppard young talent is crucial to any rebuild. I’ll take the guys who I know and grew up in our organization over mercenaries.

I think quotes like this are to avoid the embarrassment for both parties that trading him would require the Sharks to give up assets, so it isn't going to happen.

I think if we get to put Logan on LTIR/retirement is a big get for our cap and affords us the luxury of holding onto Hertl and Mario

And what makes you think that?

It could be if they want to use the cap space that it can create. They haven't really shown any indication that they will. They can afford to keep Couture, Hertl, and Ferraro regardless of Couture's injury. They will have like 36.6 mil in cap space this offseason and they have to spend 15 mil to get to the floor. If they're still not willing to eat cap dumps beyond taking what they have to take to unload a long term contract, they probably won't use the cap space they have before you potentially put Couture on LTIR and have the additional 8 mil.

His mannerisms, his speech, his on-ice actions......literally the only things we as fans can witness.
Seriously, there is maybe a handful of players across sports that fans would still support even if they are actively making the team worse. Couture was never close to that level of impact.

What about those that form your opinion?
Frankly it was refreshing to hear his takes when previous captains were just feeding us the same hockey ole same ole hockey tropes of sunshine and rainbows.

Logan Couture is an absolute warrior who has been a great player for this franchise. He has always played his hardest and elevated his game when it matters most. He is exactly the kind of guy I want to be around the young players of this team. The fact that he doesn't want to leave SJ when he has a young family and has played his entire career here does not make me think he is less of an example to the younger players. It means that he loves playing in San Jose and I hope the young guys can look to him and see that playing in San Jose can be a positive experience.

To me, Couture was becoming over-rated quite a few years ago. He's 34 making $8m in cap hit per season with three more seasons to go. He's probably a 3rd line center on teams competitive for SCF and that's the rub. None of those teams would be interested in a 3rd line center at that age and cap hit. So Couture priced himself out of the market if he desires to chase a SC now.

His trade window closed probably 3 seasons ago. Certainly 2 seasons ago.

Keep Couture as a Jordan Staal for Carolina type of player for the young players if he is healthy. He can do a lot of damage in 3rd line before you gotta pay the next generation. Also the perfect 2nd line center in Hertl is still around. I think Sharks have a good situation in hands looking at forwards. It's the defence, goaltending and all around chemistry that needs a major build up. It will take time but I don't feel like we have nothing to worry about until we have to sign some big contracts again. It's painful now, but we already have some players to watch grow and become the next generation Sharks. Nothing is guaranteed, but I'll believe in the new wave.
I'll admit I haven't watched a lot of Sharks games this year, so I guess that helps with the slight optimism. Salute to everyone grinding every game.

To be honest, is there even a point in using the cap space? If they do I would hope it's for overpaid guys on last years of contracts where we get them for basically nothing (or even get something in addition). Guys like Kyle Palmeiri.

I feel fans just blindly assume that every player will do whatever it takes and make whatever sacrifice they need to to get a chance at a Cup. But I don't think every player is like that nor should they be expected to feel that way.

Some people value stability and familiarity just as much, if not more than chasing a Cup. I know personally, I would. Couture is making big time money working in the city he always has. He didn't force the team at gunpoint to sign him to the deal. If he wants to finish out his career getting what he has earned, that is his right. He doesn't owe the organization anything more than that.
