Guentzel is out for a month too
From looking at points %, they are closer to Montreal at #8 than they are to last playoff spot in East. Definitely high possibility they end up with a top 10 pick and push Sharks pick into '25.

Do you think if the pick is #9 the pens just give it to us on the off chance they have a top-5 pick next year? I really don't know which one I'd prefer. I guess a bird in the hand, but...

I would highly doubt it since you don't know what next year would bring. And with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Karlsson on their last legs I would guess they would do whatever they can to retool for a 1-2 year run.

If they can't afford to bring Guentzel back that's definitely a bad sign for retooling for another year or two!

I really just want to get this pick this year and not take any chances or put things off any longer, so we might actually need to root for the Pens to win some games. Or at least I might, lol. I don't know why I'm so impatient/anxious about this pick.

I know the ideal situation is that one of the D like Yakemchuk, Buium, or Parekh falls to us at the Pens pick… but I just really love this kid. Really smart, creative, hard-working, and constantly-improving. Our prospect pool is definitely missing a high-end goal-scorer, since our best three forward prospects are playmakers first.

While I also like Iginla, this sentence right here is why I don't want to draft Demidov with our own 1st. The prospect pool needs to be diversified.
Sigh… I’m coming around to Demidov at 3rd. He’s undeniably skilled, maybe even more than Celebrini. If he’s the pick, I wouldn’t be mad. You can’t assume that everyone works out as projected. If Eklund is “merely” a second liner, Musty busts, and Smith isn’t a real #1C, you’d be happy to have Demidov.

Another mid season list. I always like Dobber because their write ups are thorough and avoid too many platitudes. Reflects a serious process of debate which I like.

The surprises here to me are no D in the top 4, Buium as first D off the board, and Yakemchuk as low as he is. Catton is not a surprise at 3 because people love him and are only worried about the size, which sometimes takes him into 7-12. Things will keep moving through June of course.

Eiserman at 16 is a dream. I’d go Levshunov at 3, unless we get warm and fuzzy feelings after meeting with Demidov

I'm not going to have super strong opinions until June (and even then I'm no pro) but at 16 I'd rather a number of other people right now. Eiserman not growing or changing gives me bad vibes. Iggy, Greentree, Yakemchuk, MBN, even Jiricek give me better vibes.

Same with Levshunov. He gives me 5-10, Dion Phaneuf vibes. I think this list has some good write ups about the D men. But still lots of time.

I know it's pretty well-established that the draft board is all over the place, but this list is batshit lol...could come away with Macklin at 1, Silayev at 12 with the Pens pick, and trade back up into the 1st round to nab Jiricek at 22. That would be an insane haul...

Yes, you absolutely should plan for success instead of failure, because the latter only ensures failure. That doesn't mean passing on a gamebreaking winger or overcommitting to current prospects, but you only have so many resources to build a team.

I am still undecided what to hope for when it comes to the Pens pick. Just outside the top 10 this year or sliding to next year, cause they could really crash hard next year.

Guentzel is likely gone, the core will be even older than they are already. I smell top 5 pick.

Guess I have to look into 2024 vs 2025 draft.

I debate this too. 2025 looks devastating at the top of the draft. The Penguins are the oldest team in the league, in fact the Penguins are so old, the age gap between them and the 2nd oldest team (Dallas) is as significant as the gap between (Dallas) and the 20th oldest team (Anaheim).

They're also completely locked into this roster with nobody coming off of the books until the summer of 2025 and with minimal draft capital and with most of their high earners being secured with NMC variations.

I think we win either way, so I'm not looking too deep into it but this exercise crosses my brain too.

This draft seems to have a pretty strong top ~12 so maybe the best case scenario for me would be Pittsburgh giving us a shot to snag a Buium/Catton/Parekh/Yakemchuk.

I'll glass half full it though so if they spin out so badly that they fall into the top 10, then they're primed to get Stützle'd next next June.

In my mind, Pens should just give up this year's pick even if it falls into 9 or 10. It's a relatively weak draft and they look like they're on the verge of falling off a cliff. If they are in rebuild mode last year, they shouldn't risk losing a higher pick in a deeper draft

That would be like telling their fan base the team mgmt thinks the team will be worse next year tho? DW is Senior Hockey Advisor over there...

When it comes to the Pens pick, I am just hoping for this year's pick. Hockey is a weird sport and I would never count on the penguins to be bad when they still have Crosby, Malkin, Letang and now Karlsson. They might be top 5 bad next year or they might do the same thing the 2016 sharks did and bounce back after having a terrible year with an old core.
