He brought in Chris Morehouse who was the Rangers director of scouting to essentially replace DWJr. In terms of the actual scouting staff I know we hired Thomas Vanek as an amateur scout and I think some guy from Columbus heads up the CHL scouting now.
Here's the full list of front office personnel for anyone curious: Sharks Front Office Directory | San Jose Sharks

I was pretty excited about the Morehouse hiring--he seemed to be a part of something good with the Rangers (he was also with Columbus). I remember thinking this interview was good: Chris Morehouse on His Path to Sharks’ Director of Amateur Scouting

You've also got Scott Fitzgerald as the director of player personnel, someone who was involved with the Bruins as they had a lot of success. I like that this base of personnel guys surrounding Grier have experience around the league, working in different programs that seem to be known for having done pretty well with scouting and drafting and development. In the middle of a rebuild and situation as dire as the Sharks', you need to make sure you've got a variety of sharp, experienced minds working together. Not everyone you acquire is going to hit, but you can't blow it with top picks and you've got to have the ability to find some diamonds in the rough or you're never going to get out of this pit of failure.

Morehouse said in an interview with Sheng that he was a huge part of the Rangers 2020 draft which looks incredible so far. Obviously Laf was a gimme but Schneider and especially Cuylle are legit players who should have long careers.

I really and truly think I’m taking crazy pills when I watch Dickinson play. It’s like the longer I go without viewings, the more I can convince myself I’d be okay taking him 3rd overall. But then I watch him again and wonder what the hell I was thinking. I feel like if he were playing NCAA hockey like Levshunov and Buium, he wouldn’t be talked about like a potential top-5 pick at all.
i like henry mews with the 2nd rounder but might just be hanging on to some preseason hype.
I wouldn’t hate Mews at 33rd or the NJD 2nd, but I think what he realistically turns into is Calen Addison.

As for 33rd, I like Harrison Brunicke if we’re going big defensive RHD more than Emery or Elick.

My rankings change every other day but I think Dickinson is just outside my top 5. My clear top 4 are Celebrini, Demidov, Levshunov, and Lindstrom. Number 5 changes all the time. Silayev, Parekh, Catton, Dickinson have all spent time there but I think Dickinson is last on that list. The thing that’s very intriguing to me about Dickinson is his high floor. I don’t think he will ever be a number 1 D but I think with his current/expected development path I think he will at the very least be an important part of a second pair for years.

I actually see him rather similar to Shakir. Not quite the same play style but same sort of potential.

What about goalies? Any worth considering in the 2nd round?
The sharks needs to draft a goalie in the early round. Hope they can get one of these goalie.

And we may not even sign Beaupit or Mäkiniemi after this season.

I see that Yegorov is committed to a certain University located in Boston.

Ilya Nabokov could be an interesting late round pick. Solid numbers in the KHL this year.

PS. No relation to Evgeni

I could see Sharks taking a shot on Aron Kiviharju with their own 2nd round or Devils 2nd rounder, he was a top 5 candidate couple of years ago and I feel like him dropping so low could give Sharks an advantage if Finnish scouts give them the green light. He could be a steal or a bust, but honestly if it's very wide open draft, I don't have a problem with trying him out.
If someone in Sharks organisation knows Aron Kiviharju
better than anyone else it is Sharks Finnish scout Tomi Kallio
who was a teammate with Aron's father Jani Kiviharju in TPS Turku
1999-2001 when TPS won 3 straight SM liiga championship titles.

Kiviharju's draft number will be heavily depend
on that how well Kiviharju plays in U18 WJC's.
And if you ask me what would be best for Kiviharju's development
next season if sharks drafts him he should follow Kasper Halttunen's
example and go to OHL Kitchener Rangers who onws his CHL rights.

HIFK is most injury prone team in SM liiga
and they prefer play and coach 30-39yrs old veterans so staying to HIFK would be mistake

Kiviharju would perfect for the Halttunen route, and if he dropped to the 2nd round it would be very close to the spot that they drafted Halttunen last year.
It will be exciting to see if Sharks luck into drafting him with their 2nd round pick, there will be a competition for him in late 1st round where I see him ultimately being drafted.

I'd like to see the Sharks utilize the 15M in cap space they're getting with the Lindholm, Labanc, Hoffman, and Barabanov deals expiring to pick up a late 1st for a big contract dump. Would be nice to use that + the NJ 2nd rounder to trade up into the early 20s and grab someone falling like Jiricek or something. I feel like with this draft not being as deep, teams will undervalue their 1sts and be more willing to use them to dump contracts.

Who are those candidates though? I'm just jotting down a few off the top of my head and am struggling

Seguin, Hamilton, Pietrangelo, RyJo, Letang.....All of those are stretches.

Campbell is probably the most obvious one. Barclay Goodrow another one. Now obviously EDM doesn’t have a first and there’s no way that the ego that is James Dolan will give up making a pick in the Sphere but those are probably the two worst I see. No chance any of those guys you listed (who are all still very serviceable at least except RyJo) get moved for negative value.

Totally forgot about Campbell. Yes that's the most obvious one. Idk about goodrow anymore with the cap going up. I feel like last summer was the best chance at maximum value.

Either way, I'd rather a goodrow than a Campbell w/r/t contract even if the return is less

I wonder if there’s some way we can help out Carolina’s cap situation. They have a lot of UFAs this summer and I assume they’d like to find a way to make most of them fit. They have Guentzel, Teravainen, Pesce, Skeji, and Chatfield as UFAs needing new contracts and RFAs Necas and Jarvis needing what I assume will be significant raises.

Issue with CAR is a major lack of cap dumps. Their team is just deep everyone is still important. I know that there was talk about shopping Necas at TDL which I’d love to jump at. I’d also be open to taking a chance on Kotkaniemi. Don’t think I’d do that for free though because of the length of the contract.

i got a new plan. trade up to draft Zeev with the pens pick. convince Shai to play his sr year so he can sign with us to keep playing with his bro. ez

Cool story, but there is a ton of data that shows age bias is prevalent in NHL drafting (Google “relative age effect” or REA). Where your opinion falls down is that, in the NHL draft, teams are trying to project what a player will become a few years down the road and thereafter whereas college coaches are making assessments on the player right in front of them.
College coaches are trying to maximize the 4 year window that a player is in school. So if there was a large disparity in physical maturity based on age, the college coaches would be targeting the older player virtually every time because they don't get the benefit of said player basically normalizing that supposed age curve / growing out of it (i.e. the older you get the less effect that in theory would have). I know that there's data and charts and the like on it, I just believe it to be more circumstantial than a true cause/effect relationship.

The NFL Draft is the most scrutinized draft in sports and occupies a 6 month TV window basically in terms of coverage/debate on the topic. Age of prospect is rarely mentioned/considered amongst guys that are 2-3 years apart (not a few months, but multiple years sometimes of difference). If the most prognosticated and discussed draft in the world isn't going nuts over years of difference in 20-22 year olds, I have a hard time believing that there is a meaningful cause and effect relationship in a 6-8 month age window for NHL Draft prospects.

Hear me out, what if we take Karlsson from the Pens for a 1st and Burns from the Hurricanes for a 1st.. eh? Eh? Hell, we can take Goodrow too, have another run at the cup?

I really like this idea, and I hope we pick up 1st rounders any way possible, either via taking on contracts or trading away players. Our prospects pool has a long way to go to catch ANA"s prospects pool.

I disagree on this point -- a few key differences between NFL and NHL drafts
  • NFL draft is older players, sometimes significantly older. The youngest players will have played at least one year of college and that's an extremely rare player. Typically the youngest player is actually a QB leaving after soph/jr year, often after redshirting. So you're already talking 20-23 year olds.
  • This means that a lot of the rapid development physically and in typical skills has flattened -- not all the way of course, as players keep getting better, but far more NFL players can step into a true impact starting role as a rookie exactly because they are older. This negates the 6-11 month difference between draftable players, but for hockey that's a much bigger % of their life at a period with a much higher rate of change.
  • Even in the NFL, people absolutely talk about age differences, particularly around QB's, and around how much development a player has remaining.
  • Edit: if the draft were similar to NHL and NFL players were drafted in their senior years before college, I 100% believe and will argue that those players' birth months would be debated, and e.g. how long/how many years at their position, and how far along they are physically.
I don't know anything about Baseball, but that might be an interesting area to investigate re: whether age at draft is discussed, because those players are also being drafted at 21 but baseball also seems to have a longer development curve.

In soccer, absolutely people talk about birth months, but there's no draft and players are getting scouted and signed to academies from very early ages.
