I know, my gut says defense but man, Demidov is attractive. I’m just a little worried about our top 6 being almost entirely small skill forwards (and Musty). I feel like the future Ducks/Vegas teams will stomp us.
Having a bunch of small players is a legit concern. But wouldn't you draft Demidov and build people around him? He might turn out to be even better than Smith. If we missed out on Celebrini, it would suck to get 2nd pick and not draft Demidov only to find out we missed him too.

That 2nd overall pick is scary. 1st and 3rd overall picks are obvious. But at 2nd, mistake can be made.

They should change the draft so that in addition to drafting prospects, each year is a simultaneous expansion draft. Teams submit their expansion-draft esque protected lists, and teams can select either a prospect or an unprotected player from another team. </s>

Or like, if you don’t win more than 10 games a season you get to steal a prospect. But a prospect can only be stolen twice.

Basically, it’s a prospect Secret Santa.

I get it. Ha ha ha!!! Good one.

THANK YOU I AM JOKESTER

I would love Demidov but I just don’t see a world where Grier picks him. I could be wrong. I think BPA is best.

I think there are two possibilities we take Demidov.

1. Sharks fall to 4 somehow and the top 3 are Celebrini, Levshunov, Lindstrom. Even then I think Grier takes Dickinson though.
2. Demidov is somehow inexplicably there at PIT’s pick.

What would you part with to get Leonard? He and Smith work so well together.
Not saying I would do this, but trying to think what each team might consider. I think it would have to be a trade based around Eklund.

Washington is only trading a young higher-end talent for another young higher-end talent. Sharks are certainly not trading Smith or Musty. That leaves only Eklund, barring some unlikely evaluations of Bystedt and Edstrom. Washington brings in a higher end piece to help compete and grow sooner, while the Sharks get Smith 'his' guy. Let that duo grow together.

I must confess through writing this, a core of Musty - Macklin and Leonard - Smith looks, on paper, sick. Of course, can't take the lottery as given and development can go either way.

Leonard definitely has juice, I just don't think Grier would sacrifice prospects or picks for him. If we get the pens pick and not Macklin, for example, he could pick Iginla or Greentree as potential Leonard style replacements and Eklund has a lot of the elements that make Perreault successful. You can recreate that line, I think, around Smith.

Yup, don't disagree. My response was specific to the initial question - conditional on trading for Leonard, what would be needed to give up.

If the Sharks remain last place, which looks extremely likely be the case, the lowest they can pick in worst case scenario is 3rd thankfully. It's nice to be the worst team.

With our luck though, Chicago and Anaheim will probably get 1st and 2nd overall picks.

Yeah I mean that was why I said fall to 4 somehow. I just don’t see anyway Grier passes up on Levshunov, Lindstrom, or even Dickinson over Demidov. Could be wrong as his draft picks have surprised me before but think that’s the most likely scenario.

13 points needed to pass Anaheim with 10 games left. Still mathematically possible, but we would need to win 7 of the last 10 games with Anaheim losing every game in that time.

I think Sharks have a great situation in their hands at the end of the day.
They'll either get a possible 1C, 1-2D or Lindström that could be anywhere between the 1st and 2nd line, not sure if he is more of a center or winger.
If you asked me now I would go for a defencemen if we aren't getting 1st overall pick.
It's just the positional need, and before we get to BPA conversation I think if there isn't a clear number 2 or 3 forward pick in this draft, you go for a need. After that you have one slot less to really worry about. Even if Levshunov doesn't become the best defencemen, I feel a lot better Levshunov being the 2-3 guy behind that better defencemen we get some day.

After today, CHI might be just 3 points behind ANA. Pick your poison I guess. If CHI gets Macklin, we might have a Crosby + Malkin problem on our hands with CHI. If ANA gets him, we'll get pushed around by ANA for a decade.

I could see Sharks taking a shot on Aron Kiviharju with their own 2nd round or Devils 2nd rounder, he was a top 5 candidate couple of years ago and I feel like him dropping so low could give Sharks an advantage if Finnish scouts give them the green light. He could be a steal or a bust, but honestly if it's very wide open draft, I don't have a problem with trying him out.

I'd like to shift the focus to the Sharks 2nd round pick. Let's say both Emery Jr and Eldrick are available. Which if any would you prefer and why?
Those are definitely two of the guys I have my eye on for that pick. Maybe Emery just because I have more faith in his development path. UND has been churning out NHL defensemen lately.

If the draft gets into the mid 20s with Brandsegg-Nygard and/or Parascak still available we should totally try to trade up and nab one of them though.

I think those guys are going to be gone by the teens. Jiricek might be this year's Musty though...

I think Emery, Elick, Badinka, and Letourneau will be targets around our 2nd Rd picks but I'm definitely pretty thin on my knowledge later in the first round and beyond. I just see these names, sizes, and descriptions and think that's what we're targeting. Sure, we took Luca, but we took him two rounds after he was projected. I think they target size and/or a stand out skill in the 2nd, like Halttunen.

Grier made a slam dunk with the Musty pick when everyone else missed out on him. Do you think our scouting is so much better now? That really gives me hope we'll make the most out of our draft. Did I hear correctly that Grier made a hiring spree on new scouts when he took over? I tried to google but didn't find any article on Sharks hiring a lot more scouts.

He brought in Chris Morehouse who was the Rangers director of scouting to essentially replace DWJr. In terms of the actual scouting staff I know we hired Thomas Vanek as an amateur scout and I think some guy from Columbus heads up the CHL scouting now.
