I will also be surprised if Demidov is the pick for Columbus because the average org height thing is a legit concern, but I also don't particularly care who they take (except reaching for a player they could trade down for). I can talk myself into pretty much any of the top ten or so prospects at four except a couple of the defensemen.
My frustration was with Pronman's inconsistency and his Michkov-based argument in particular and not with who specifically they should draft. The size issue can be solved in other ways than with this pick.

You seem to have forgotten the most important factor when it comes to national media and Columbus: what Columbus does is always wrong. Passing on Michkov to take Fantilli? Wrong, and evidence that the team hates Russians as well.

At the same point Waddell said scoring is hard to acquire .. you get the chance to draft Demidov, you move some other players if needed.. Personally , the comparisons that scout made on Lindstrom and Keith Priemeu made me nervous .. Lindstrom is bigger than his comp .. I may lean Demidov and then Sennecke..

And passing on Fantilli to take Michkov would have been characterized as so obviously disastrously wrong that we'd be getting "Boone Jenner is their #1C of the future" hot takes for years.

I would hope to take Demidov if he’s there at 4, but I could live with Lindstrom. If he’s truly healthy, he could be as much of a play driving type of player as Demidov. I don’t view Sennecke in that same manner, so I’d be very disappointed if we took him over Demidov.

the second part of that tweet (the one he's quote tweeting) -- i've had surin on my list of guys i hope are there when the jackets pick in the second round for a while now.

obviously #4 is the bigger focus but my list for 36 (in no particular order) is:
  • surin
  • brunicke
  • artamonov
  • letorneau
  • badinka
  • danford
  • emery
i doubt all of those guys will be available at 36 (letorneau, brunicke and emery seem like decent bets for the first round, and some scouts love artamonov's game) but i'd be surprised if they were all off the board by then, too.

imo the defensemen projected to be picked around 36oa are more intriguing than the forwards, and the forwards available at 4 are more appealing to me than the defensemen.

also really like ollie josephson as a potential matchup center but i think there's a solid chance he's there in the third round.

Our choice might be between Demidov and Sennecke.

My guess today is that it will go Celebrini - Levshunov - Lindstrom. Verbeek can't resist Lindstrom.

Yes he's bigger than his comp. Most NHL prospects playing in junior are bigger than their comp, it's the ones that won't be bigger than their comp in the NHL that you should be concerned about. Lindstrom will be bigger, faster, stronger at every level in every league.

No offense but not interested in either. I would prefer to trade back or get a veteran star piece than gamble on another winger in which we have too many.

Sennecke would have to basically perform at a high level consistently in order for me to justify that pick. I just can’t get behind it at all at 4. Would be pretty disappointing.

Also about Russians - I found it intriguing that we displayed interest in Silayev. We could be confident we’d pick at least one Russian every draft. Up until last year. Took a look at the staff directory and realized last year was the first year we no longer had a Russian scout on staff.

Look up Boris Yemelyanov.

Laine will likely be gone by the time either is starting to become ready (Doubt we extend him) and Gaudreau will be on the back half of his contract. Who knows what the future holds for Chinny, Marchenko and KJ.. Any of the three could be moved.

If our scouts think Sennecke/Demidov is a 80+ pt winger it would be make no sense to not want him because Marchenko and Chinny could be 50-60pt guys.

We don't have any players like Sennecke or Demidov in the system.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Lindstrom, but I could easily get behind any of the three being the pick.

Previously, I had Lindstrom and Buium tied behind Demidov. But after the combine, I have Lindstrom tied with Demidov. Possibly even a fraction ahead sometimes. The hype is getting to me. I am late to the party, having also finally discovered Sennecke and liking what I'm seeing. So right now my preference, excluding Celebrini, is:
1. Demidov/Lindstrom
3. Buium
4. Sennecke

EDIT: I expect that Demidov will probably be ahead for me on draft day, though.

1) I love listening to all the banter about the players. I just read Pronman's article where he anonymously quotes scouts and execs trying to get candor from them. He quoted sixteen people on the d-men and everyone is all over the board. Levshunov gets the most love but Silayev, Dickinson, Buium, Parekh, and Yakemchuk all have their fans. Interesting read!

Everyone thought the same thing last year regarding Fantilli...and yet he selected Carlsson. Not saying Anaheim doesn't take Lindstrom but hardly a slam dunk.

Lindstrom is far from the betting favorite to go third. I just have a guess (not a slam dunk) based on players Verbeek has liked or not liked and that includes taking Carlsson over Fantilli.

Do you have any particular reason with regards to Lindstrom? With Carlsson, wasn't the reason given by Verbeek the hockey sense and intelligence of his game? Lindstrom is a very promising prospect, but his game has not been described like that. Granted, Carlsson is bigger than Fantilli (and apparently is not done growing), though Fantilli plays a more physical game. So is it a size thing?

Interesting from the athletic today polling scouts ….

Just as there is a lack of consensus on the best defenseman in the draft, there is a lack of consensus on who is the next best forward in this draft after Celebrini. You have the three WHL forwards in Spokane’s Berkly Catton, who is dynamic but 5-foot-10, the competitive goal scorer Tij Iginla, and the 6-3 center in Lindstrom who can fly and is highly physical. There is the dynamic 5-11 SKA winger Ivan Demidov. And then you have 6-2 winger Beckett Sennecke, who was lights out in the OHL playoffs.

Scout 1:
“With Lindstrom, best case you’re getting a legit No. 1 center. I think even if you miss on Lindstrom and he’s a third-line center, he’s a type of third-line center a GM is ecstatic to have, the kind that winning teams have in the playoffs.”

Executive 1: “I do have a concern on Lindstrom that you’re just getting a second-line two-way guy. His tools are outstanding but I don’t see the high-end skill and sense to score a lot in the NHL. They’re small but my lean is to Catton or Demidov because they have so much offense.”

Executive 2: “Catton looks like a can’t-miss top-line forward. He could be a first-line center. I don’t say this lightly about 5-10 forwards, because so few of them can stay in the middle, but I’d be surprised if he wasn’t a 1C in the NHL.”

Executive 3: “I’d take Catton or Iginla. They’re highly skilled guys who compete, play fast, put the puck in the net and were excellent in the WHL. Give me a break where all the lists have Demidov. He’s lighting up the MHL, but that league is so bad. Michkov was great versus men over there and went seventh.”

Executive 4: “Iginla has a lot of pro elements to his game. He’s super skilled and can score, but he’s detailed, he competes hard, he gets offense in the tough areas of the ice. He’s not that big yet, but you look at the dad and you’re hoping when Tij fills out he’s going to be a handful to deal with. The trajectory he’s on is pointed straight up as well.”

Scout 2: “It’s Lindstrom for us. You may be getting a second-line center, but he’s a second-line center who plays super hard, is a great skater and your coaches will be able to rely on.”

Executive 5: “I can see the arguments for Catton and Sennecke but I’d pick Demidov because he’s slightly more dynamic offensively than the other guys. Sennecke has more of a power element. Catton is a complete player offensively — he has no weaknesses — but Demidov can make so many plays and is high-end with the puck. Demidov doesn’t lead with speed, but is great east-west although he doesn’t skate like the other two. Lindstrom would be fourth for me.”

Executive 6: “The body of work would go to Demidov. The pure physical tools would make you pick Lindstrom. The best player in the last six months would be Sennecke, and he would be my lean.”

Executive 7: “The disrespect I see for Catton is crazy. He scored 110 points, Captain Canada at the Hlinka where he dominated, is a dynamic play-driving center. If he were two inches taller he’s the no questions asked No. 2 pick.”

Executive 8: “Demidov. He’s just dynamic, he’s the clear No. 2 forward for me. Then it would be between Lindstrom or Iginla.”

Scout 3: “Demidov has a chance to be the next great Russian star in the NHL. He’s a game breaker.”

Scout 4: “I would probably take the big guy in Lindstrom. The skating, the heaviness, the offense, it’s all very appealing. I like Catton and Iginla but I don’t see special small-guy traits in them.”

Scout 5: “It’s clearly Sennecke for me. He has the potential to be a game breaker. He’s big, he’s fast, he has elite skill and processing, even has some bite in him. I get the concerns on his production, but you watch the last 2-3 months of his season, he looked like a star.”

Agree… see the athletic article from today ….

depends on who's describing his game.

the EP crew pretty much universally praised his hockey sense. here's their roundtable discussion on him. on his hockey sense in particular they talked about how his hockey sense isn't elite yet but that is firmly high-end, and that he is rapidly improving. they seem to think that he will one day develop high-end hockey sense.

the reason why he's not typically characterized as a high-IQ player is because of lazy/biased scouting imo. he's a big and strong and physical and athletic, so he's put in this box of being a 'prototypical power forward' which undersells his hockey sense.

Sure, it can also be a question of what role he is playing on the team. Basha is the playmaker on that line, for instance. However, my point was that with Carlsson it was the stand-out element of his game and, more to the point, what Verbeek used to justify defying expectations by taking him ahead of Fantilli. I don't think anyone taking Lindstrom will necessarily motivate it like that, even though I agree his hockey sense is underrated and something that I think, going forward, he will show when he gets the chance to.

I think the most obvious indication that Anaheim is going to pick Lindstrom is that Lindstrom seems to be a consensus expected pick here at HFCBJ, which virtually guarantees Anaheim will take him just before we can like they have for the last three drafts running with McTavish, Mintyukov, and Carlsson.

That also tells me that we'll still turn out okay regardless of the ensuing worry.

Brilliant observation.

I’ll wait a few more years before I pass judgement on these draft picks
