I'd love it if we emphasized playmaking and hockey sense almost exclusively this draft

and another goalie
Hockey sense should always be a priority. I think asking for "playmakers" or "creative" players is getting too cute and asking for a big mistake. As soon as you start going looking for something narrow, you end up seeing things that aren't really there in players.

We just need to focus on finding the best offensive players, period, round after round. If you do that you will find your share of higher skilled guys and guys who can pass and play with the puck.

Watch the kid drafted by Ottawa with the pick we send them for DeBrincat (Boston's 1st rounder for Bertuzzi) turn out better than ours in the top 12...

I’m on the Connelly, Brandsegg-Nygard and Greentree train. All 3 look like easy top 6 wingers from what I’ve been watching online.

Yeah, that Ottawa kid is gonna be the next Logan Brown, Shane Bowers, Jacob Bernard-Docker or Lassi Thomson.

Not sure if anyone posted/shared it, but HP released an updated ranking on Xmas. Getting the vibe there is not much of a “consensus” with this draft.

Emil Hemming and Igor Chernyshov are interesting options. 6'2 wingers with size and skill playing in a men's league. Tried to watch Hemming at the WJC but it is not the best tournament for evaluating first time eligibles, IMO.

somewhere around nothing
Even though Norway releged, there were players who standed out.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygård, the MBN, i think Yzerman and Draper has circled his name. I think he fits in the team identity very well. Almost a perfect match to Kasper and Danielson. 5 games, 3+2 and +1. Quite good considering Norway allowed most goals in this tournament.

Stian Solberg, potential 2nd round target. Very physical PMD, nice size already 6'2" & 196 lbs. I don't know what they are feeding to these kids in Norway, MBN is 6'1" & 198 lbs.

Petter Vesterheim, skilled kid and good skater. He is overaged, 3rd or 4th round?

Noah Steen, good skater. Probably most or at least 2nd most zone entries in the team. Also overaged, not bad size 6'1" & 187 lbs. 5-7 round?

Kevin Magnussen, 19 and plays in NCAA. Quite nasty kid sometimes, couple of filthy plays in the U20 Worlds. 6-7 rounds?

Martin Johnsen, flashed his playmaker skills in relegation game against Germany. 7+20 in 24 games in Norways league. Not big though 5'10" & 176 lbs.

I like how almost all of the kids in Norway can play physical game, just like the men's national team. Now they seems to find some skill to go with that physicality. I wouldn't be too surprised if Wings draft someone with Norwegian passport.

Here are detailed scouting reports on Bennett Senecke and Liam Greentree from Brock Otten, who covers the OHL. I could see Detroit liking both of these players. The report on Greentree does a heck of a job selling you on the player.

Here's a shift by shift of Greentree.

EDIT: Liking what I see. Good skills package. I can see him becoming a top 6 guy but I'm not quite sure who I'd compare him to at this moment.

Also if people want to get the meltdown out of the way now, just be prepared for us to draft this kid in the 1st round despite where he's ranked (like half kidding ):

He's already scored more career goals than Brady Cleveland in a single season. Draper would hate this kid.

I am very skeptical on whoever it is we have scouting the USDP and USHL.
Yzerman and Draper are there a lot themselves. A bunch of the kids billet with close Red Wings ties. I find it curious that we haven't had more going on with it, but I also have to acknowledge we should have a better understanding of USDP than pretty much everyone else. There is a lot that we know about it from locals that suggests as much in terms of a heavy presence and intersection of hockey people.

There is now the American work out group, really the Hughes brothers arrival brought it, but guys like Larkin are involved in it. There is a lot of talent coming out of that program though, I wish we did a better job on acquiring more, not really sure the root cause of it though.

For someone who should have a better understanding of that team than most, I found some of those decisions they made curious last year (Augustine aside)

I don’t know how you watched Perreault all of last year and then didn’t think he was worth taking at either #9 or #17.

I also don’t know how you watched Cleveland not able to obtain a top pair or PP spot on probably the worst blue line that team has iced in 20 years and then thought he was worth taking in round 2.

So I’m not sure they have any edge with scouting the USDP team from what I’ve seen.

I agree we haven't done well there, at least you would hope we would do better with the advantages.

They are not scouting USDP, because they might think those guys would be possible targets returning to Michigan as they approach the UFA-age ?

Why invest draft capital there in the big picture, if that could be our future advantage?

DeBrincat, Kane, Copp, Compher already started this of movement, to join Larkin.

USA hockey is growing so damn well, and almost all who go trough that development path, will have ties to Michigan.

Because one of the biggest benefits of the draft is to get quality players on cost-controlled deals and that only happens for the period of time prior to being a UFA.

I will not pretend to know what our draft list looks like each year or what the organization actually thinks of the respective NDTP kids each year. I do think, however, our geographic proximity to the program may actually be hurting us because it results in a certain amount of overexposure to the NDTP kids over two years. If you watch a kid a ton, you run the risk of fault finding after a certain point and you find yourself looking for something new and better. Now that said, metro Detroit is a massive hockey scouting hotbed generally and we aren't the only organization with scouts living in the area.

In "defense" of the Cleveland pick, the team admitted that they tried to trade back even further but ultimately just decided to take him even though it may have been early. More than anything, I am very surprised by how few NDTP kids we have actually taken since the late 90s.
