I don’t understand the constant Kevin Hayes hate around here. Wasn’t he one of, if not the most productive TDL acquisitions in the league that year? He put up more points than any Jet forward that wasn’t on the first line, that includes Laine, Ehlers AND LITTLE, who only had 2 points in that span.

Then playoffs come and PoMo does what PoMo did while he was here. PoMo would rather lose with his boys than win with someone else. Hayes has his TOI dropped from over 15 min/game to under 12, still keeps pace in points with Little who was getting over 16 min/game and better line mates.

Or are we just mad that Hayes spoke privately to his roommate about his time in Winnipeg then the roommate’s daddy wants to feel like a big shot insider on some obscure podcast and wanted to share the rumors? Which by the way, EVERYONE AGREES WITH WHAT HE SAID. I don’t think Hayes was out of line with anything he did.

People wonder why he didn’t enjoy his time here? He’s in line with a whole bunch of players who felt the same way.
The only thing I didn't like about that trade was that Bryan Little went ice cold after it. I think it rattled him a bit being demoted again, especially after re-signing here long term. And he was the 2C to start the playoffs once Laine and Ehlers were split up. If the Jets hadn't made that trade the Rangers wouldn't have a 1st round pick to trade back, definitely not the 2nd OA, so I wonder if Chevy knew that Trouba was on his way out before the season ended. I guarantee there were some tensions in that locker room, you could see it from Buff, on the ice.

Can't entirely disagree but ... when does Coghlan get a game?

We don't have much LHD depth in the A. Kuzmin is the only LHD on an NHL contract with the Moose. And he isn't ready. Freij is the only other LHD in the system and he is further away.

Just for discussion, lets assume that Heinola is ready sometime soon. Lets also assume that he finally fulfills the high expectations we had for him several years ago. We can platoon him and Fleury to get different styles of play there. Does it then make sense to trade Stan? Or should we stay with 8 Dmen the whole season?

On one hand you could argue that we need that depth on the left side in case there are injuries. OTOH, you can choose to go with just 4 LHD. If 1 is injured, there is no real problem. If a 2nd is injured at the same time we could play a rightie on the left side. Or we could shop around for a replacement level LD as a temporary replacement. There are always some available cheaply.

How far do you go with keeping extras around as injury replacements?
I'm sure Coghlan is more than happy to be getting an NHL paycheque for a month to start the season. When Heinola comes back probably has conditioning stint. Same with Jared Anderson Dolan. There's not a rush to move anyone off the roster. And it's crazy for an unbeaten team to talk about trades at this point.

I think you are making things up. No player on this team has more unwaivering fans than Ehlers.

When it comes to what the Jets do with him, I trust Chevy. Who are the best home grown players Chevy has let walk? Ladd? Overpaid and broken, might be some parallels here. We also may have gotten lucky that Ladd was asking I for an insane contract and Chevy wouldn’t cross that line. Trouba? I don’t think the Rangers are happy with that contract. Copp? LOL, go take a look on the Red Wing board for their feelings about him. Tanev, maybe? But he’s not a core guy. Lots of guys have filled the role of being on Lowry’s wing just fine.

Or Chevy thinks everything is fine and will re sign him, which I’m also good with. I think the main factor will be how the Jets feel about his medical situation.

I would add Laine to the list as well, wanted a fresh start, then wanted a fresh start again. PLD even more so but he wasn’t home grown. Guys that have wanted a fresh start, too much money, to play in NY, or fill in the blank have not really thrived elsewhere. This might be the catagory Chevy could lead with if he ever has to defend his track record to anyone.

Not sure what the plan is for Nik.

And even if PLD did well in LA the return was good.

PLD seems to be off to a good start with the Caps. 5 points in 6 games on what could be a badass line with Wilson. Seems like Blake is running a clown show in LA.

Blake seems to have a good eye for defensemen. Clarke and Spence pushed out older guys. They probably wish they still had Faber though with Doughty out. I think it would have to be Robitaille and Blake getting tossed together, and the Kings are perenially battling for a playoff spot. Looks like Alex Turcotte took over Dubois's spot, in L.A, taking the long development path to get there. Goaltending is still the question mark after trading for Kuemper.

Watching the Sabres and Red Wings today and wonder if Byram becomes available as a pending RFA. He’s playing right side with Power on the 2nd pair. He’s a young dman who would be a nice upgrade in our top 4.

I can see a Morrissey type points explosion for him when he hits his prime. A nice replacement there. Wonder what the Sabres would need in a Byram deal?

Well, they gave up Mittelstadt to get him, so figure it out from there.

Would folks (or TNSE) give up Perfetti for him? With small add to make it work. If they resign Ehlers and Connor, Perfetti becomes a bit more ‘available’ potentially.

Though that’s a tough decision to make. The Jets would need more size at forward, if Ehlers and Connor are resigned.

Not sure, have to think about that one.
Certainly would not part with Perfetti unless Ehlers is signed.
Buffalo GM was quoted a while ago as wanting to add more experienced players. Maybe Ehlers is the one going the other way.

Also though, Buffalo's problem is not scoring. It is keeping the puck out of the net. What they really need is a goalie. And maybe more team D. IDK how good they are there. Is their D problem all in net? All D corps? All F not playing D? More likely some of each. But the goalie would be the biggest factor I think.

Buffalo has so many good young skaters that I keep trying to figure out ways to steal 1 or 2. Its hard coming up with a proposal that they would likely bite on.

Buffalo os crowded at wing as is. I don't see us as good trading partners.

Also no real interest in Byram.

How much will our players go for their next contracts? @Mortimer Snerd I think if KC can be an 80-90 point player and play a relatively responsible 200 foot game I think his next contract starts at high 9's 10's easily not 9.25. Can he keep it up only time will tell, but, the fact it is not a contract year, gives me hope.

Always hard to guess contract amounts. I'm guesstimating 9.5 for Connor, assuming he continues to play well both ways. He is pacing for 100+ pts right now. If he hits that benchmark it might go higher.

But that contract is still a long way off. Who knows what might happen?

My guess is we let Iafallo walk as he's too expensive for his role. They will do what they do with most depth guys and play hardball with Barron. Likely get him on a short one or two year deal at a modest raise.

Snerg will get paid due to his situation, arb rights a year before UFA. I'm expecting around $4 to $5 million aav.

The players who are interesting are Appelton, Vilardi, and Namestnikov. For Apples and Namestnikov what can we realistically pay vs. What there market values will be. If Namestnikov scores around 40 points again he's going to want Nino type Money, ditto for Apples. Can we afford to pay another $9 million in cap space for depth pieces through their early or mid 30's?

Gabe has two years of rfa eligibility left after this one so if he doesn't have the greatest of year could go to arbitration and take a one year deal to further prove himself. The issue with that is it would take us to a summer with Cole and KC also needing new extensions. My guess is the org will want to lock him up next summer so that they know what they have going into the 2026 offseason. But Gabe will be in the driver's seat here.

Fly I think you pay him or he walks. He holds the cards here.

Valardi may be the hardest contract to figure out, he is a little on the older side then a lot of guys coming out of thier bridge deals going into his age 26 season. Clearly the potential is there currently averaging 25 goals in 82 games but there have been so many stops and starts. The two best comparables I can find are Jared McCann & Tom Wilson both coming off 2 year bridge deals both were high pick wingers that had potential but hadn't been able to put it all together yet. McCann got 6.06% of the cap and Wilson got 6.5. I think Gab falls somewhere in the middle there call it 6.3% of the cap assuming we are up to 92 mil that's a 5.8 cap hit over 5-6 years. Given his injury history maybe Gab would be willing to do a longer deal which I think would be a great idea for the Jets to get some of these expires out past Mark and Connors.

This thread almost dropped off the front page.

Speculation on the Ehlers thread that he could/should be offered 8m or so p.a. on a long term deal. What about Vilardi and Samberg, who also need new contracts next year? What would they look like on long term deals? I'll leave the rest out of the discussion for now, but the likes of Iafalllo, Appleton and Namestnikov (etc) also have expiring deals. Vilardi and Samberg, however, will likely get 6+ years.

I have Nikki at $8.5m, Gabe at $6.0m and Dylan at $4.5m for next year. It leaves us still with about $19m to spend on 6-7 players.

Kupari, Barron, Miller, Fleury and Salomonsson likely get us to 20 players for less than $8m. So in good shape heading into the Connor and Perfetti offseason in 2026.

Are your numbers with the assumption that Pionk, Names, Apples and IO move on?

I think you're probably close with Nik at 8.5, I'd be a bit wary of going long on Gabe. I think you're a bit high on Samberg.

I was just guessing... but when I was doing some puckpedia next year's lineup for fun I had Samberg as 8 years x $5M and Vilardi as 8 x $6.25M so you are in the same ballpark as me.

To keep it simple I had Appleton, Namestnikov and Iafallo at $3M each for whoever we want to keep.

Lots of season left to make a decision on Pionk. Gotta think the Jets are intent on keeping him the way he has played so far as well as the team as a whole.

Depending on how many games gabe plays, 7 x 6m might make sense to me but hes very injury prone. One of the harder ones to predict. But as it stands gabe might be my favourite of the new acquisations of the last few years, same with miller. Definitely guys Id love to stick around for a while.

I like Gabe! His "down low" game is elite. But we're talking about a guy with a career high 41 points and is also injury prone. 6M is ridiculous.

Yeah thats granted he has a full, healthy year. Look at his numbers, hes never played more than 63 games in a season. That year he scored 23 goals. So if he has a full, healthy year, I can see him scoring around the 30 goal mark which would be grounds for about 6m as far as Im concerned. But is there a higher likelihood of becoming more injury prone, or less, as he gets older? we'll see

No clue how they keep everyone. The team has decided Villardi is on our top line so cuts will have to be somewhere else. It’s not good a pf who can’t stay healthy as it seems the opposite that you’d need someone who can considering all the abuse they take going to the net.
Also, paying someone who can’t stay healthy a lot based on one healthy season is a huge risk. As say he stays healthy this year, signs a 4 year deal at 6 million and misses a lot of games the next 3 seasons.

Not making an assumption as to whether they move on or not, but when I say $19m for 6-7 players, they are not included in the 16 retained or proposed retained. Pionk and Appleton would likely take a decent chunk of that $19m and round out the roster, with the noted cheaper signings.

Honestly a $6 million aav is probably thr minimum we should expect for Gabe. With the rising cap $6 million is probably close to average rate for a second line forward. He puts up 60 plus points he'll be closer to $7 million. Injury concerns may bump the numbers down a bit.
