If Ehlers doesn't want to talk contract now because he sees it as a distraction, what changes going to Carolina? I think Ehlers waits until the end of the year. And he's the primary own rental the Jets have. Pionk should be re-signed, maybe he's having such a good season that the numbers are too high for Chevy's liking, but I don't suspect that's the case.

Rantanen is not going to waive to come to Winnipeg. That's 99% certain. If he hedged that Dallas is a better bet than Carolina, with no taxes in Texas to sweeten the pot, I wouldn't be surprised.
taxes aren't a concern for 3 months in Winnipeg. just 15% withholding tax for a non-resident.

Note to Chevy: unless there's term, you must stand firm.

I just hope the Jets don't do anything stupid for garbage depth now. Laughton + Risto for a 1st+ doesn't move the needle and arguably makes the Jets worse...and you lose that 1st+. Don't do it, Chevy!
I really know people dislike this opinion but I don't think we have a team built for playoffs, the bottom 6 don't have enough offence and outside of lowery no tenacious in your face fore checkers to bang on the d and get turnovers, and look what one injury on our d does to weaken it,dillon hasn't even been replaced, heck Schultz wasn't great but is he better than what's replaced his min, sandberg has really developed but demeo has taken a step back.as for stanley for the love of the game get clark gillies to take you to the weight room man and drag some players with you.

RE: Murat Ates (Staff Writer, Jets)

Winnipeg begins deadline day at risk of losing a Central Division arms race to Dallas and Colorado. Brock Nelson was a Jets target; it's tough to think of a less palatable place for him to go from their point of view than Colorado. Dallas may be able to consolidate a Mikko Rantanen trade — and, even if it can't, it's clear that the Stars are ready to make big moves. To be clear, the Jets are worthy of their No. 1 record but recent playoff shortcomings give this deadline added scrutiny.

Kevin Cheveldayoff added to Winnipeg's roster every time the Jets have been anywhere near this good. He has approximately $12 million to do so again but it's getting harder to predict how this unfolds. Scott Laughton probably doesn't help the Jets in proportion with the first-round pick or top prospect price Philadelphia is asking for. It's tough to see a route to Brayden Schenn or Ryan O'Reilly, either, although one expects the Jets to explore all of their options.

The biggest favor Cheveldayoff could do his club isn't about a forward at all. It's about upgrading the blue line, where Logan Stanley and Colin Miller do not offer confidence against deep teams on the third pair. Stanley in particular has struggled with puck retrievals and transition defence, while he and Miller are No. 1 and 2 in penalties taken per minute. The Jets could lose the arms race for top forwards and get away with it based on the depth of their existing talent. On defense, I'm not as sure that's the case.

I like Pageau more than Laughton.

I wonder about Palmieri for secondary scoring, instead.

I am not convinced that getting a marginal upgrade at C is better than adding more offensive punch on the wings for the middle 6. Namestnikov and Lowry give the Jets solid defense and possession down the middle but the Jets could use more scoring punch and depth on the wings.

thanks for the pep talk.

That shultz was terrible for us.

Oh yes, Dallas, please extend Rantanen at 12M a year. Do it.

Looks like Dallas is trying to lean into the tax-free state end of things, because yeah, this will be short.

Carolina offered bigger AAV from what we have heard over the last few days since they traded for him.

At that point, why not just test FA if you are Rantanen? Here's hoping things break down.

It certainly remains to be seen. But I think it is more about mentality. Being able to "find another gear" for lack of a better term.

I think Demelo had a slow start to the season, but has been back on track for a long time now. Samberg has been immense in the top 4. It's all about Stan on the back end and second line scoring up front.

Pageau would be a great addition but he doesn’t solve the 2C issue which has been a major problem for years. Chevy tries to solve the issue every year at the deadline and it hasn’t worked. If he doesn’t solve it this time they really need to try to make a move in the off season to plug that hole going forward.

The fact that Yager was rumoured part of the offer for Nelson makes me wonder if Chevy doesn’t see him as the future 2C we all do and if true, then I’m all in on Cozens or another young 2C, either today or in the offseason.

who rumoured him to be part of the package?
Can’t remember where I saw it, was last night and I had like 20 windows open at the same time…no guarantees it was a “legit” source as it might have been Reddit or another of those type sites

I'd like to get Marchand here. Anyway we could steal him from Boston?

To Wpg - Marchand, Carlo, 25' 3rd Rd

To Bos - Barlow, Lambert, Heinola, Stanley, 26' 2nd Rd

Boston gets prospects and gets back some cap space, while Carlo can slot right in and until Marchand is healthy, we will keep rolling along fighting to stay in first. I think Marchand as the 2nd line C would help a lot for a deep playoff run, he's one of those players where you hate to play against (especially in the playoffs) but would want to have on your team.

It may be true, but I have a hard time seeing the Jets not coming out of the 1st round if they win the division/conference. Getting out of the 2nd round might be tough, but what's working in the regular season shouldn't be discounted. Improved special teams, and better team speed seem to be making some difference.

Even as it stands Dallas does not have a great defense. Adding Ceci doesn't change much from the defense the Jets torched earlier in the year. Dumba is still in their starting lineup, until Heiskanen gets back, and I'd take Stanley over Dumba at this point.

Colorado still has some holes too.

And the Jets probably have better depth than either team. Especially if Dallas goes all in on Rantanen.
