Technically, the Avs are not above the cap because Nuke is treated like he was shot to Mars. According to CapWages, the Avs are $7.278M under the cap, but that actually includes 24 players, not 23, largely because there are 3 goalies active on the roster. So really $8.278M

In theory, Landy takes $7M of that space, should he return, leaving $1.278M. Nuke is going to require approximately $5M when he returns. So even cutting 4 players and using a roster of 20 - thus saving about $3.4M - the Avs are still a little bit short. So every dollar they can save by these paper transactions will ( I presume CMac has calculated this) slowly accrue enough room for Nuke.

TL;DR - Unless the Avs conserve cap space, they will be unable to fit both Nuke and Landy on the roster.
Are you taking into account Poolman's LTIR space?

BTW, seems like CapWages isn't being properly updated right now.

Edit to add* I put everything in a spreadsheet. Assuming a 23 man roster with Nuke @ 5, Landy @ 7, and Kaapo removed, the cap hit would be almost exactly 90M. Taking into account Poolman's 2 million in LTIR pool, everything fits just fine. The recent injuries do cloud it up a little though, which is why the team has been agressive with the paper transactions.

Nuke is probably by league day... IIRC the suspension cam the afternoon of the 13th, which is technically the next league day. So probably some confusion on if it ends the 14th or 13th. In the end, it is just one game, so NBD.

Cap wise... the Avs have about an 81m roster today. The ups and downs obviously change that and LTIR rules are tricky. But the day Nuke is activated, he's back at his 6.125m rate (though he won't count until that happens). That'll put the Avs right near the cap on the daily rate when activated. Which is why the Avs are pulling these daily moves. Bank as much as they can now as they don't really have room to activate Landy should the time come.
That one extra day for Nuke to get reinstated. $$$.

Make the cap room by trading Rantanen.

Still think Landy will be back... But if he isn't the Avs will have plenty of LTIR space to work with at the deadline I guess. Probably want a Top 9 Forward, #4/5 D and potentially a goalie. Would like to get someone with some skill for the Top 9 Forward spot. Feel like we have a decent number of hard workers but are lacking some pure skill in that group maybe?

Drouin - Mack - Mikko
Lehky - Mitts - Nuke
LOC - Colton - ????
Wood - Ivan - Kovalenko
Kivi/Kelly

Toews - Makar
G - Manson
??? - Malinski
Ludvid/DeHaan

I wonder if there is any truth to the whisperers that Byram is potentially available from Buffalo.

Frederic would be a nice add, but we already have one player that plays better on the wing than they do at C in Colton and they're basically the same level of player

Yea, I don't disagree with this. If they were to make a move like that it would be because they've moved out some other wingers. I do think he'd fit well on this team, we haven't had a real agitator/shit disturber since Kadri.

I dunno. On one hand, I'd love to see a guy with his speed and size on the forecheck. That's the thing that drove me nuts about Trenin, he moved like a dump truck on sand.

On the other hand, I feel like the Avs have way too many grinder-types who are below average to bad defensively, they need someone who's more responsible with the puck.

Also, if yer gonna get a guy like Frederic, you have to just let him loose and deal with the consequences (i.e., penalties) later. Bednar won't do that. Certainly not with the current state of the goaltending.

Hmmm, they're already admitting failure there. Probably best to flip him now before he finally outlasts his rep as a 4th overall pick.

I don't know what Buffalo needs more, a better scoring winger, a decent 3rd line center, a stay-at-home defender who doesn't suck and isn't made of glass, or goalie who has a modicum of consistency.

Obviously not, just that it's interesting. But not that surprising TBH, I was and still am mystified for why Buffalo made that trade.
Yeah it was a bad fit from the start. Especially after they already threw a ton of money at Power.
