Hmmm, they're already admitting failure there. Probably best to flip him now before he finally outlasts his rep as a 4th overall pick.

I don't know what Buffalo needs more, a better scoring winger, a decent 3rd line center, a stay-at-home defender who doesn't suck and isn't made of glass, or goalie who has a modicum of consistency.
I don't know if it is about admitting failure or just needing to tweak what they have. In either case, there are rumors of teams checking in. Namely Seattle.

I still wonder if the logic for getting Byram was that they needed to move Mittelstadt, and Byram was the BPA on the trade market. And they thought they could eventually flip Byram as well. Because it really didn't make sense to get Byram as they were already committing to Dahlin and Power.

Oh, that could lead to something good for both sides. Seattle has a lot of complementary pieces that might fit in well up front in Buffalo. Burakovsky, Bjorkstrand, and depending on how much he has left in the tank, Gourde.

I think we somehow fooled Buffalo into believing that Byram could play RD, thus filling their most glaring hole at the time

Avs pulled the plug on Byram at the right time thankfully learning from past mistakes.

Marner, Sorokin, and Byram switch places I don’t care who lands where just captain chaos this league for my entertainment.

I’d argue they still waited a year too long at least.

All of your screaming that he was the best player in the 2022 finals got to Buffalo's heads.

Ignore all of his NHL games before and after that. Those 6 games cemented his value.

I’m sure that’s part of it and they could figure out the details later. Which really means one of Byram or Power would be moved eventually.

It really didn’t make any sense. The last thing they needed was another LD and especially one offensively slanted in current style (though I still stand that Byram needs to change his gain).

For underwhelming Shane Wright?

What does Buffalo need anyway? A RD?

Seattle has a lot of pieces to potentially use... but I kinda think Buffalo needs a decent amount. They definitely need a solid RD and a more defensive one. They need either an elite 3C to take some usage of Cozens and Thompson or a 2C to shove Cozens to the wing. A top flight 2 way top 6 winger could also be very useful for them.

At some point, Buffalo has to quit acquiring BPA and talent and start building a team. Right now they have an abundance of good LD and probably the best grouping of prospect offensively slanted wings... but Wahlberg is the only 2 way center prospect. Quinn isn't really a prospect anymore, but the only real 2 way guy there (Benson has some 2 way chops but will always be limited in his size/skating combo).

Seattle would be dumb to give up on Shane Wright currently. First because he's not getting extreme value right now. Second, because he's actually been one of their better forwards. His production hasn't caught up to his impact yet. And it may never do that at a #4 pick... but I think is play this year is pretty positive.

Their most glaring weakness is in giving up goals. They rank 6th (you can probably guess who ranks first) in the league in most goals given up. So yeah, they need a defenseman, but more importantly, they need a goaltender. Luukonen is way too inconsistent and I have no idea at this point if Levi will pan out or not. I don't think they can afford to wait regardless.

IMO though they should focus on getting some friggin' scoring. It's fine to let Olofsson and Skinner go, but to not replace the scoring that left with them doesn't seem like a good idea. John-Jason Peterka is a good player, but I don't think he should be your top scoring winger.

Yeah.. that's what I thought.

His Eliteprospects "projected stats" look kinda sexy though. 73 games, 0 goals, 0 assists, 146 PIM and -73. Would fit our 4th line perfectly.
Would play 3 shifts, take 2 penalties and Bednar would make sure he'd never see the ice ever again.

Kinda funny how incredibly well Nicolas Aube-Kubel fit with the Avs, given his penchant for dumb penalties. One of the few grit guys who was actually able to clean his game up without losing effectiveness in Bednar's system.

Like who though? I really can't think of any young centre that fits the bill better than Mitts.
This is easy to state now with seeing Mitts here, but the majority of this forum was against it. The viewpoint on him as as player has shifted dramatically since the trade.

Avs could have grabbed Norris, McTavish, Zegras, Cozens, and PLD as younger players. They could have also used him to grab older, but better players like Horvat, Miller, or Nelson.

Speaking of Jack Quinn (hilarious name given the Hughes) - what happened to this dude? Offensively slanted but no offence? He did quite well in the AHL, maybe Buffalo is just doomed.

Who on this list is better than Mitts??
