Speaking of Mitts I finally found the contract model from Evolving Hockey, someone asked about it the other day. This was posted on the EH site a week before the signing.

As you can see, the price for 3 years was projected at 5.8M (spot on), 4 years was also 5.8M AAV and 5 years was 6M AAV. Best bang for the buck was 7 years at 6.7M, that'd have covered his entire prime for dirt cheap with the cap going up. Best option considering our cap situation would have been 1 or 5 years.

Take a few seconds to read the paragraph on top please.

That contract bought 2 RFA years and 1 UFA year.

So we really should've done something like Nuke's contract. Or basically the numbers above.

I think these charts have some valuable insight.

I also think that they are simply computer generated, and it shows. There’s simply no logical reason that his cap hit would stay relatively equal from 3-5 year contracts and the Avs would simply say no thanks.

We’ve seen the avs extend contracts purely to bring th cap down to a manageable level.

Now, do I think the Avs should’ve signed him longer, absolutely. But I have zero faith these were the numbers discussed at the negotiations. 4 and 5 year contracts are WAY too friendly to the Avs for them to not go that route.

Okay cool. But what did Mittlestadt the actual human with thoughts, feelings and ambitions want? Not the computer model.

You are way too obsessed with this contract.

We don't know everything the Avs offered, nor do we know that Mittelstadt and his agent would've accepted the Twin Brothers' model-generated contract.

Without being a cap expert I wonder (hope) the Avs are just using this “setback” as a way to get extra cap or be compliant. Hopefully Landy is fine but that’s the optimist in me.

I would assume the playoffs is when he is back

Am I? It's almost as if we've been burned with not having a 2C before and we don't have another Byram to trade for a new one.

Of course we don't have to let him walk, we can re-up him at age 29 for like 8 X 8 and watch that contract become an albatros after 2 years. A worse version of what we have done with Toews.

Wonderful.

I'm not saying that's what you're doing now but it's important to look at the numbers with last year's eyes and not with the data we have today.

Your reaction when he got signed for 3 years was "yikes!", so I wasn't alone to not like it.

I am really not that concerned about what will happen two years from now. The window is likely closed and 2C will be the least of our worries. It’s about now and next year and then? I guess we will see.

Again... What does the human with actual thoughts want? You're obsession with this contract and not realizing that he has legit input into the contract that was signed is legitimately maddening.

I think we need to do all we can to get UPL. Adams has been disgusting in trades and supposedly Byram is now available due to his incompetence.
Byram is available because of his contract situation. Not really the case for UPL.

Then again, we managed to get Mittelstadt for Byram so maybe we can fool Adams again somehow.

UPL or Levi. Either one would work.

I'm not so sure. Neither guy has impressed me a ton, if at all. Levi especially is a long-term project along the lines of Askarov, but even riskier IMO.

It's either take a risk with a semi-proven goaltender like UPL, take a larger risk with Levi/Askarov, sign/trade for an vet stopgap like Markstrom, or pay a boatload in either assets or cap for a Ullmark.

UPL is one of the better fits for the Avs. Whether they can actually get him is another question.

IMHO, UPL is what we all want Annunen to turn into and since goalers are such wildcards, you gotta go after ones that are already established. UPL is a much better option than goalers who have moved in the offseason or are rumoured of moving including Blackwood, Gibson, Allen, Markstrom, etc. Only Askarov would surpass him for me.

Who do we offer for UPL?

Excellent question. Buffalo wants to get better and I'd imagine they wouldn't easily trade their currently better goalie. They have no use for our 1st rounder etc. either.

Levi could be a lot cheaper and easiet get but he isn't established yet and might not match our window.
