But you just said no internal guy nor Blue Jacket!
I'm also resigned to the notion that they'll likely just fill the spot internally. So if they're gonna do that I hope they pick the best guy they can.

And I'm just telling myself that he's a *recent* addition...so he's kinda outside. Yeah. That's it. That's the ticket.

The Stars may not win a Cup for numerous reasons, but Johnston is going to be a franchise talent at center and Robertson is plenty good enough on the wing. McDonnell's track record speaks for itself.

Cups are not how you should judge amatuer scouts though. If that was the case, we should be hiring Hepple back immediately!! (Please kill me if that happens)
I think if Stars don’t win the cup, it’s because their core is simply not good enough and that’s really what we’re talking about here. Amateur scouting of Tampa vs Dallas and which is better. So far Tampa has the edge because the core they’ve drafted have won the cup and Stars always come up short. I haven’t really been too impressed with Robertson in the playoffs.

What you’re not accounting for at all here is how many top picks they’ve each had. McDonnell has had a single top 10 pick with the Stars (he also won a Cup with the Wings).

This was a thing?

Rumors are floating they are shopping to anybody who’ll listen. The Hawks answer there tells you a lot. They can afford the risk, are a rich org, need talent, and still don’t want him.

Never heard of it before but that'd be really dumb. Last thing you want is a problematic player around your young guys when you try to build a culture and it's not like Nuke would help them in the playoffs, they'll finish last for the next 3-4 years.
Avs raise you a Chucky with the Eagles.

when you compare the core of Dallas and Tampa and where they’ve been drafted, it’s very similar

Heiskenen 3rd overall - Hedman 2nd overall
Robertson 2nd rd #39 - Kucherov 2nd round #58
Johnston 23rd overall - Stamkos 1st overall
Hintz 2nd round #49 - Point 3rd round

Oettinger 1st rd 26 overall - Vasi 1st rd 19 overall

The only real advantage is Bolts drafting Stamkos 1st overall

Every year I say this and I end up regretting it but Laine could become a huge homerun for any team that will get him (likely for peanuts).

I guess a guy who will score over 600 goals really isn’t much of an advantage

Not even 18 months ago people here were writing off Dallas and saying they were done. While some were pointing out how they’ve rebuilt on the fly. What they have done to build a new core is incredible, even if it doesn’t end up in with a Cup.

(You also have Drouin and his subsequent trade adding to it. Plus a couple top 10s that didn’t pan out).

I did say Bolts drafting Stamkos is a real advantage. That’s sort of makes my point that this Stars core may not be good enough to win the cup and they’re probably missing a Stamkos type of impact.

The way you stated that was that it wasn’t a huge advantage… when they got a legit hall of famer.

The main pieces of Cup teams almost always contain a few top 10 picks. Dallas just hasn’t had those to take advantage of. Pracey and Hepple didn’t make the Avs because of those picks. The Avs being terrible is what allowed that.

Scouts make their money from the late first through the fourth rounds. If you’re continually successful there, you’re a good scout.

Meh, I was alluding to the fact that Nuke is eligible to come back on the 15th of November. Give CMac a day to get rid of him an we should be able to sign Drouin on the 16th.

I was just making a stupid joke. Drouin will be signed during the summer and we will go 10% above the cap until the end of training season if necessary. A trade will happen or someone will be injured but Drouin will be resolved before Nuke.

Dallas is missing the 1st overall pick compared to Tampa (which is big) the rest of the core players of both teams have been drafted pretty much in similar spots. Maybe that’s what Dallas really needs to actually go all the way, although I’m not sure how they gonna get a #1 overall pick

I would 100% take a shot on Laine if Cmac could miraculously fit him in. Right handed shot and I'd be more then willing to bet that Rantanen and Lehkonen can get his game right. If only we could unload Nuke for him retained. One can dream.

The more I think about it the more I want a Nuke for Laine swap.

Pay what it takes. I'd gladly give up our 1st+ for Laine at 6M of they take Nuke. Laine could do some serious damage next to Mitts and Drouin and worst case scenario we're out of that contract after 2 seasons.

CMac gotta find a way!

If Nuke isn’t coming back, how about Marchessault? He’s 33 so maybe won’t cost too much

Kind of feel that Chicago is the last team that would take a chance of a player with major character issues.
