I've never seen evidence that hitting with runners in scoring position is in any way a sustainable skill.

And even if it was a "sustainable skill", the examples thrown around (someone previously mentioned Jeter and David Ortiz) are typically HOF-type players lol. So what's the suggestion then? The Jays need to improve their RISP output by adding more HOF-type hitters to the lineup? Okie-dokie.

Also a fun fact...

David Ortiz with none on - 138 wRC+
David Ortiz with RISP - 138 wRC+
Derek Jeter with none on - 116 wRC+
Derek Jeter with RISP - 116 wRC+

Clutch!

The playoffs are a different beast and with that comes extremely odd and fascinating samples. You just never know what you're going to get come playoff time with David Freese's coming up clutch and David Price's blowing up games.

The 2019 Houston Astros had a historically elite offence during the regular season. They then made it to the WS with historically awful offensive numbers (especially with RISP). You can't just expect teams to replicate their regular season success in the playoffs, and likewise it means players who performed poorly in certain situations have a new clean slate and are able to generate some confidence.

I remember that Astros team, specifically Alvarez who was a monster after he got called up and then turned into a potato in the playoffs

Even last year, Pena wasn't a good hitter for 100+ regular season games but became a hero for 13 games in the playoffs

With our pitching staff, I feel really good about our chances against anyone in the playoffs. Our hitters may come through if some of our players hit to their capabilities.

What about the location of said fastballs though?
You're right, many don't handle high fastballs very well. But not only location but the kind of fastballs they see. A four seamer has little movement, a two seamer is more like a regular fastball but may have late-breaking action. The three seamer has the most movement of any fastball. A pitcher may change the type of fastball with RISP that we can't handle. Mix that in with changeups, cutters, sliders, etc seems to have our hitters flummoxed. Throwing fastball stats in general doesn't tell the whole story.

wow, Yan Gomes.. still kickin' around. i remember when he came up with the Jays, but he was competing against Arencibia and didn't really have much of a chance.

Arencibia flamed soon after, and Gomes has stuck around.

WTF does last years Dodgers team have to do with this? Lol

Game over already.

What? You were saying this pitching staff + the 2015 offence would easily win the WS… mind you that 2015 offence was neutralized by KC’s pitching staff.

Last year’s Dodgers team was a best offence/best pitching combo that bowed out of the division series.

Well. Let me slightly backtrack. "Easily" might have been a stretch. But they would certainly be the odds on favorite to win.

I think that 2015 Jays lineup was better then last years Dodgers. Not by much. But I think it was.

It might not be a coincidence that Bellinger fell off over a rather tumultuous time period in our world…

Dejong is completely checked out at the plate
