Hold on let me guess... Moreno is a young superstar starting catcher?
To be fair I don’t think wanting Moreno over Kirk is a wrong choice. The problem with his post is that he thinks Varsho is a pinch runner/defender on a good baseball team when that just isn’t true.

And this idea is building off of the assumption that the Jays were getting the same calibre of player as Varsho for Kirk.

For what it’s worth the bad body Alejandro has been pretty durable compared to Moreno in their pro careers. Has he been poor this year offensively? Yes. But we should also give him credit for the job he’s been doing behind the plate too. Kirk’s still a great catcher that should bounce back with the bat.

Moreno pro rates to 5.0 bWAR per 520 at bats and he's doing this at 22-23 through his first full season. He has a lot of additional value because of defence and base running when compared with Kirk. If he has any uptick in power i.e a slugging percentage increase to around .430-.450 then he's virtually an all-star. I think I'd prefer Moreno over Kirk given the extra years of control and the decent running, but i'm still happy with the trade. Deciding between those two is almost a toss up. We have a good one in Varsho at CF and Kirk/Jansen at C.

Also grades out as one of the worst framers in the majors (bWAR does not include this in their dWAR metric), approximately a full run worse than Kirk this year.

Lets all take a selective small sample size shall we.

Overall the guy is batting sub .220 in a larger more representative sample size.

He's a defensive or base running replacement on any other team.
He’s adjusted his swing in the last moth and this is the result. He’s tied for the best drs in the league. His bat started awful and it hurt his start with us. He was a big disappointment to for most of the season but appears to have turned a corner. There’s lots to be down about with the Jays offence this year but the guy apprently coming out of his bad season shouldn’t be one of them. I think the jays tinkered with his swing to try and adjust something and it failed. He’s gone back to his more traditional style and it’s paying dividends. Fingers crossed he’s turned the corner and we finally get the player we thought we were gonna see

I think given a choice the majority of us would have preferred to keep Moreno over Kirk but it’s likely not what the Dbacks were interested in. Who knows really how management valued our catchers.

Kirk certainly deserves a ton of praise for the work he’s done to improve behind the plate. His game calling is miles better and his defence as a whole is much improved. There are worse problems than having Kirk as your other catcher. We have two essentially elite defensive catchers imo. Moreno I believe had the best arm of the bunch though.

Yeah, Moreno may have the best arm in the league while Kirk and Jansen are about average. Kirk is among the top blockers and framers, though... definitely an elite defensive catcher.

Considering how many teams are willing to run with an offensive black hole in order to get strong defense behind the plate, it's pretty remarkable that the Jays have two fantastic defenders who can also contribute with the bat.

Not too concerned with the scoreboard. Jays have to win their games. They have a rather favorable schedule and the teams they are chasing play each other quite a bit.

Houston beating Boston is actually better imo. Don't need them closing any gaps on the WC. The sooner they're out of the race, the better.

If Arizona beats Texas, then the OOT scoreboard will turn out OK.
Texas winning or losing does nothing to help us. The Sox getting closer is also better than the Astros getting further.

It does, because they move closer to the wildcard race. They've been bad lately and have a tougher schedule than Houston and Seattle, including 4 against the Jays.
I guess if the thinking the Texas can fall that far down sure but that seems like a greater hurdle

Both Houston and Seattle are within two games of Texas. They don't exactly have far to fall before they're fighting for a Wild Card spot. Obviously you want the teams closest to you to lose, but Texas being so close just gives the Jays an extra path to a playoff spot.

His problem is his barreled balls are travelling shorter distances than before. Hot weather is supposed to improve that
