How are the draft picks high end if they're 31 and 37 and we picked up a 22-year old who was taken at 16 and is in the NHL and developing according to plan?

Newhook is now the fastest forward on our team, has plenty of untapped offensive upside and plays with a lot of jam. He's on the verge of breaking out with more opportunity on a team that isn't fighting for playoff positioning.
This is supposed to be one of the deepest drafts of all time, declared so by folks much more knowledgeable than myself.

I’d rather have more picks closer to the top, than less in one of the deepest drafts of all time.

Giving them away for potential seems like questionable management to me and I’m a big fan of Hughes.

Yes, it wouldn't be the first time that a projected top-2 pick saw his stock drop over the course of a full year leading up to the draft. However the unfortunate part is that if Michkov does drop, it seems likely due to non-hockey related reasons. Of course, these are important factors to consider when drafting a player, but they are also the only reasons he may be available at 5 in the first place. If Michkov drops in the rankings because his development stalled and other prospects leapfrogged him, that makes it a lot easier to pass on him because you're actually taking the best player (assuming that's what your scouts determine).
That's a matter of opinion. There are also some concerns in his game and how his flaws will translate at the NHL level. He's not a slam dunk.

And let's not pretend hockey teams live in a vacuum. The non-hockey related reasons are complex and consist of a great deal of uncertainty.

My point is that if we don't take him, it's completely irrational for outsiders to get upset about him being passed over by those who have been putting diligent work into his evaluation and have close connections to his parent team.

We won't trade back until we know who's there. That's a draft floor trade, and Montreal won't pass on Carlsson.
However, given the limited time teams have when their turn to draft comes up, it makes sense that contingency talks are taking place now. Hence, this is where Seravalli is getting his info.

And it does appear that the first 4 picks will be the centres, as we have been speculating since the lottery. So, it’s almost certain that Michkov lands at 5OA.

On that basis, Hughes can milk out overpays until he gets an offer that is too good to turn down. He has nothing to lose.

I posted this earlier:

I know it’s not the same trade and I’m well aware of the age difference. I just don’t see how trading two high end draft pieces makes sense when you’re rebuilding, and I think we paid too much for Newhook and his potential. We’ve been very lucky so far with MSL being able to turn guys around, but it’s not going to happen every time. I hope Newhook works out, but I don’t think the cost is worth the risk, at this point in the rebuilding process.
We aren't at the beginning of the rebuilding process anymore. We still are rebuilding, sure, but we're in the middle of it. Picks 31/37, realistically, how long would they have taken to make any sort of impact on the Habs organization? With our development track record and history, I'd say pretty damn long, at least 3-5 more years before either of those picks sniff the line-up.

By that time, hopefully, we're out of the rebuilding stages and looking to compete again. By then, our goal won't be to develop on the fly on the NHL roster anymore (like it is now) so getting them up won't even be a priority.

At least Newhook is young, is already in the league, and he's had a couple of (rocky-ish) years under his belt. Plenty of time to figure out where he's at, and see what he's made out of.

Or he can just draft him and not look back…

Draft picks are all about potential. Newhook's an actual NHL'er with speed and skill who many think is on the verge of breaking out.

We hear that all the time about drafts being deep. I have also heard some say it isn't that deep. We won't know this for another 5 years.

Especially when the evaluators seem to know what they are doing. If it was the MB crew passing on him I would have zero confidence that they knew what they were doing.

Listening to 690 and the 2 Ronnies are doing a mock draft for tonight and Campbell as the Habs trading 5th to the Caps for 8th + McMichael + Caps 2023 2nd. Then Gallo as the Habs taking Leonard at 8th.

We've been over this already but I call BS on the ''Washington only'' thing, in 3 years there's a good chance none of their core/Russian players will be there and the Caps will suck ass. Why the f*** would he want to go there?

I think Smith is the target.

If hes gone, and Michkov is the guy left.. I think they will be willing/ looking to trade for a massive haul.

But if a team doesn't step up with such an offer.... I do get the feeling that Hughes will actually take Michkov as he doesn't seem the type to say pay up or we take the kid ... and then not take the kid.
