How about Sakic?

Fleeces the Habs out of two picks and a middle prospect, then turns around and uses the lesser of the two picks (37th) to grab Ross Colton from Tampa. I would much rather have Colton at that price, who is well over 50% on draws and brings a physical element, over Newhook.

McFarland.

Colton will turn 27 he's way too old for this group.

This is the draft thread.

If Sharks decide to take Leonard, and Carlsson/Michkov are BOTH on the board, I would entertain the following:

1. Trade the 5th overall pick + Christian Dvorak + Jake Allen to Flyers for 7th overall pick + Travis Konecny + Carter Hart + Tyson Foerster
*Flyers select Carlsson (they need centers no?). Coyotes select Reinbacher lol.

2. Trade the 7th overall pick + Tyson Foerster + Jordan Harris + Mike Hoffman to Red Wings for 10th overall pick + Moritz Seider
*Detroit get superstar Matvei Michkov, Washington get 1 of Dvorsky/Benson. Vancouver get Sandin.

3. Trade the 10th overall pick + Josh Anderson + Joel Armia to Coyotes for Clayton Keller straight up.

4. I wake up, and find out Montreal picked David Reinbacher 5th overall and throw my TV out the f***ing window.

Colton is 5 years older, has arbitration rights & is UFA next year. It seems unrealistic that he would sign a long-term contract with Montreal, and at age 27 is above the age of young core anyway.

Newhook is 22, and has only played 2 seasons in NHL. He's RFA with no arbitration rights.

They also had almost the exact same points last year.

As Barry Trotz, general manager of the Nashville Predators, previously pointed out, the Canadiens hold the key to the draft.

It seems increasingly clear that there are only two possible scenarios for the Canadian: either they choose Matvei Michkov with their fifth overall selection, or they exchange this choice with another team in a monster transaction.
Either they choose the faller in case Michkov gets picked top 4, or they exchange this choice with another team in a monster transaction.

And is what, 27 years old?
You want the best player now or the best one in 2 years?

Ross is a 26 year old 3rd liner who is unsigned and looking for something around 3.5M per.

Newhook is a 22 year old with the same production who's yet to break out and has the potential to become a 60-70 pts top 6 fwd.

It's not the same trade.

If I had to guess this is what will happen:

If Michkov is available at 5, we will trade down to the flyers pick, and select Leonard if he's available, if not then Reinbarcher.

If Michkov is not available at 5, we will select whoever of the big 5 is left.

Today i decided to stop the Cigarette, they better not make me regret my décision :P
Congrats my man stick with it. I managed to dump smokes during the post season when we took out Boston and Bergevin did his famous dance.
A word of advice be careful because I also cracked the screen of my Plasma TV throwing the remote when Price got taken out. :help:

I watched all Wright’s playoff games and it was patently obvious something was going wrong or very off for a 1OA.
Yup! And yet there were countless childish tantrums all last summer on this board. I've been around long enough to have witnessed the same meltdowns in 2005 when we passed on Gilbert Brule at #5 and took Carey Price.

It's always so predictable.

I know it’s not the same trade and I’m well aware of the age difference. I just don’t see how trading two high end draft pieces makes sense when you’re rebuilding, and I think we paid too much for Newhook and his potential. We’ve been very lucky so far with MSL being able to turn guys around, but it’s not going to happen every time. I hope Newhook works out, but I don’t think the cost is worth the risk, at this point in the rebuilding process.

Habs trade for a young player who would ideally be in the top 6 if there was room, but he hasn't had many opportunities where he's at and will finally get that in MTL.

Avs trade for a bottom 6 guy who is perfectly tailored for the role they are going to put him in and has shown to thrive there.

Comparing Colton and Newhook as players is useless. The team situations for the Avs and Habs are totally different.
