If Carlsson is still there at 4, and we aren't drafting Michkov doe sit make sense to offer Anderson and the 5th to San Jose for the 4th. Or better to keep Anderson and drafy Leonard ?
You trade Anderson if only for the cap dump cause in a few years, he'll be untradeable

Habs trade for a young player who would ideally be in the top 6 if there was room, but he hasn't had many opportunities where he's at and will finally get that in MTL.

Avs trade for a bottom 6 guy who is perfectly tailored for the role they are going to put him in and has shown to thrive there.

Comparing Colton and Newhook as players is useless. The team situations for the Avs and Habs are totally different.

I know it’s not the same trade and I’m well aware of the age difference. I just don’t see how trading two high end draft pieces makes sense when you’re rebuilding, and I think we paid too much for Newhook and his potential. We’ve been very lucky so far with MSL being able to turn guys around, but it’s not going to happen every time. I hope Newhook works out, but I don’t think the cost is worth the risk, at this point in the rebuilding process.

The cost was three assets that will probably never be everyday NHL players. I don't mind the risk.

How are the draft picks high end if they're 31 and 37 and we picked up a 22-year old who was taken at 16 and is in the NHL and developing according to plan?

Newhook is now the fastest forward on our team, has plenty of untapped offensive upside and plays with a lot of jam. He's on the verge of breaking out with more opportunity on a team that isn't fighting for playoff positioning.

Last year was supposed to be the Shane Wright draft. The pecking order of teenage hockey players is very fluid and changes constantly throughout their development years which are still far from complete for these kids.

Yes, it wouldn't be the first time that a projected top-2 pick saw his stock drop over the course of a full year leading up to the draft. However the unfortunate part is that if Michkov does drop, it seems likely due to non-hockey related reasons. Of course, these are important factors to consider when drafting a player, but they are also the only reasons he may be available at 5 in the first place. If Michkov drops in the rankings because his development stalled and other prospects leapfrogged him (as was the case with Wright), that makes it a lot easier to pass on him because you're actually taking the best player (assuming that's what your scouts determine).

Man I loved Sakic but he is a bit old now, even if I think he would still be real good. He is also busy managing the Avs. ;)
Reminds me of the Harry Neale quote on Rocket Richard - Harry was asked, “how many goals do you think the Rocket would score in todays NHL?”
Harry replies - “probably 20”
Reporter - “only 20? Why is that?”
Harry - “well you gotta remember, he’s 60 some years old.”

We take Smith, if Smith is gone, we take Carlsson, if Carlsson is gone, we take Fantilli.
I personally think that the only scenario where we trade down is if Fantilli, Smith and Carlsson are all gone and Mitchkov is there at 5. if any other the other 3 are available, Kent is drafting them.

Now, I have no clue if Kent trade down if Mitchlov is the best options, but if he does, he better get a king's ransom.
