Remains to be seen. They traded away Newhook, who was a 30-point player in the two years he played in the NHL and brought in Ross Colton, who is a 30-point player, but is also 4 years older.

Johansen is the wildcard because he's real good, but the gripe with him is his effort level isn't always there.

Effort level and an obscenely horrible contract that required 50% retention in order to move it.

I'm legit asking. It's just weird to me that he's Bedard level apparently yet he can fall that far.

He’s got Bedard level upside but his game is not perfect, his physical stature is not perfect, and his risk profile is not perfect. He can only be a top6 player to boot.

Overall, as a prospect, he has more downside risk than the other three of the top5.

With that said, his upside is what we should be looking toward as Habs fans because despite his downside risks he is still one of the top5 prospects and overall significantly better than the 6th ranked prospect and later.

Not a bad bit of business at all for Colorado. Colton is an awesome bottom 6er and probably a better fit for them than Newhook for what they need. Plus still have the 31st. Really really nice

I was thinking I wonder if we could have traded them Dvorak 50% retained instead of one of those picks.

I guess they preferred players like Colton to Dvorak.

Seems obvious.

Michkov is not making it to 5. He is the second best player in the draft. He is present right now and interviewing and making a good impressions on team. Teams openly wants to move into the top 5. If he is there at 5, i strongly doubt Hughes and Gorton skips him. They are savvy.

I would have a tough times understanding moving down and it would be the first move from Hughes and Gorton that i would be skeptical. They are savvy. Pretty much impossible to see them trade down before the four picks are made. That would be dumb. If they are their eyes set on Carlsson or Smith. Its very probably one of them is there at 5.

Yeah no matter who they want to pick, just stay at 5 and guarantee you get the player you want. An extra late 1st isn't worth missing on the player you really wanted from the management's POV

Some would answer that by saying the talent drop off isn't that much from Michkov to Fantilli, Carlsson, and Smith. So it's worth taking them. But after them, the talent drop off makes it worth taking the risk on Michkov...

1) expecting an Edmunson trade for a 2nd rounder.

2) I think he'll keep #5 it until he talks, in case the options are not what he expects at 5. Then activate the plans to get what he wants.

Yeah having Slafkovsky wasn't a super bold take seeing that Bob Mackenzie himself had him at 1 and he averages various rankings. But dude is being really dumb. Had michkov at 5 and basically said you can't control his development and that's why Leonard and dvorsky are better prospects.

A lot of it is smoke and mirrors. But for the top 3 or 4 teams, the difference in skill isn’t that big and the others don’t have a 3 year contract.

Agreed. Hard to see the Habs trading down if Carlsson is there at 5. Well, they better not.

I'm okay with that. I would much rather swing for the homerun and strike out then swing for a single or a walk.
Even if Mishkov ends up being a bust or doesn't come over (for whatever reason), at least we tried. Would rather that then go for a safer but much lower ceiling player (someone outside the top 5)
