The loser move is being scared of keeping a guy in division and taking a less return to send him elsewhere. If Vegas does somehow have the best deal then you trade him to Vegas.

These are geographical rivals who legitimately compete for fans with the Devils. There's no such spot for SJ and VGK. By the time SJ is good, VGK will likely be bad or at least floundering. I wouldn't care about making this move at all except for the fact that if Meier is good and the return turns out bad, the media will bring it up any time Vegas plays SJ. GMs shouldn't have to concern themselves with this bullshit but they clearly do.

26 big right shot center, signed for 3m x 4.5 years. Just it's vegas's MO to be willing to move any and all roster players for a big name upgrade and I couldn't really find anyone conceivably interesting to Grier that Vegas would be interested in moving.

Vegas has some intriguing goalie prospects. They don’t seem to regard first rounders with zeal. I could see a package of one of the goalies SJ loves, a first, and Cormier getting the deal done given what SJ is looking to do.

Fitz has done a good job with this negotiation drawn out. But I can see the burning push and desire to add Meier. As of now there really isn’t an ideal forward fit appearing on availability radar in next two seasons and while that could change this is probably the best chance. SJ had been forcibly adamant about getting Nemec or Mercer in deal and they are buckling down to an asset based package in return. Mercer never made any realistic sense whatsoever as we all know.

Unless a dark horse jumps in last minute, this has Devils written on it. Future cap, Bratt, bottom line makeovers will be priorities this off-season. That’s Fitzs problem to juggle. Not ours.

Except how much lesser are we talking...subjective lesser or actual OMG lesser? If it's the difference between getting an additional 2nd rounder on top of the main package as opposed to a 3rd rounder, no I'm not handing a rival a great rental they can extend just for the sake of the 'best deal' on that. If we're talking an additional first-rounder or an additional top prospect, then that's another story.
