While I think he was jerked around too much (same with Zetterlund), top 6 ice time is earned. Holtz doesn't get to play because he hasn't been effective enough in a bottom 6 role to stick and he's not as good in the top 6 as anyone we currently have there.
100% this. If another team can stick him in their top 6 and keep him there through good and bad, I'm sure he'll be great for them. But I enjoy not having any one in the line up like we've had a lot of over the past few years, top 6 or nothing players. If Mercer has a couple off games in the top 6 he is still amazing in the bottom, Palat, Tatar, Zetterlund on and on. That's the type of team that you need to build.

I don't like the idea of putting players in positions they're going to fail and then getting on them for failing. They had him there for camp and he looked really good. Then they took him out of that spot and put him into spots where he was doomed to not perform. Would it really be crazy to think he could outperform Yegor on that line?

Sharangovich has spent most of the season in the bottom 6, and I think he's better at that role than Holtz.

They didn’t give him a chance to start the year either. Has him there all camp only to drop him for game 1. He responds by playing a really good game. They respond by playing him 9 minutes and under 6 the following 2 games. He was never given a chance
Teams do practice (especially early in the season), my guess is he hasn’t shown much in practice either. Training camp and early season, a lot of decisions are made based on practice rather than just game performance.

You fixate on the dumbest shit. No, I don't think that - right away he would be put with Hughes or Nico. If it weren't working there, or something else weren't working, there is a possibility that something else would be tried, including him playing with Boqvist. Bratt played on the third line for a game or two. They like to try different things.

The key is, they try it with a top 9 - Wood has played up on the third line a bit, and at one point they were calling the McLeod line the third line, but they really do see that as a separate unit and don't mess with it. That is not true of the 7 other forwards who aren't Nico and Jack, who they will move around.
So this post is allowed to stand? Aight.

Let me rephrase my response then.

Yes lines are often fluid. Coaches do try to spread the talent, and like I said, ideally they have the talent to roll a "top 9" type of lineup. But often they can not. And that is why the McLeod at one point was considered a third line. That highlights the difference between the top 6 and bottom 6 on this team.

Sure sometimes(though very rarely) Bratt will play on the 3rd line, and Mercer and Tatar too. But come playoffs Bratt is not on Boq's wing. Meier, if we are to acquire him, is not on Boq's wing. Those guys, like Nico and Hughes, are in the top 6, and then you shake out the rest of the lineup from there.

Perhaps in the years ahead Mercer develops and becomes our 3rd line center so as to make NJ a "top 9" type of team, but as constructed? We are a "top 6 / bottom6" style of team.

He's also a pretty good forechecker. His main weakness is defensive zone coverage, which Holtz is also not good at.
One thing I've noticed with Rango at times is that he seems to have trouble getting pucks in deep and making the simple play. Don't know if I'm just focusing on him too hard, but I've noticed that a lot in the last few months.

I think this might have to do with being up and down so much. As much as people fight the idea, certain lines are asked and expected to do different things. I think he sometimes fumbles between ideas of taking it in and keeping possession and just dumping and chasing.

This might be the case and I've thought about it. Glad I'm not the only one noticing that though, I don't like to unnecessarily harp on players lol

I hate to be that guy but Meier or no Meier doesn’t make a difference. Sure he’s a nice player but the flaws on this team will not be masked by just another Swiss born player. I wish Fitz would get over this fetish of his. This is a hockey team. It’s a business. Not a friends slumber party. This team has somehow lucked its way into the record it has but the bus will come screeching to a halt when they face the Broadway Bullies in round 1. And hearing that Kane is all but a done deal across the Hudson is just a terrifying proposition. The Rangers will push us around and skate circles around us at the same time. Not a year to be buying and quite frankly I don’t see a buying year in the near future for us in this house of horrors division.

Someday people will learn that NHL teams do not think in terms of a top 6 and bottom 6, that it is clearly top 9 and bottom 3. But until then, we'll just deal with all the takes.
I mean when your top two centers are Jack and Nico and your next two are Boqvist/Haula and McLeod there is kind of a top six difference here

We will be in the situation where will have to ship out some of our prospects because we cannot afford them all. There's so many D-men coming from there and we got competitive deals for our stars, so everything looks pretty damn good. We shouldn't fall to one big fish and be too greedy about one certain player, because out of sudden we're one of the most appealing teams to come over. Meier just would fit nice in here and the Swiss connection we got most likely plays big role him coming here. Yes, im pretty sure we're signing him and quite happy about it.
