If the last year has shown us anything, good wingers become available pretty regularly. We have the hard part of the forward corps locked down and we’re at the beginning of our window.

No reason to get tunnel visioned on Meier and bet the farm.

How many guys are we going to lose out on before we make a move? If the rumors are true that he wants to come here, you make the move as long as you aren't giving away the farm in assets. Could care less about $.5M or whatever the additional cost would be. Every team is able to make room for whatever they want.

Let's say both Meier and Bratt get $9m/season. That would be $33.25m tied up in 4 forwards long term, which is a lot.

This is the kind of thing that makes me miss the Lou days. We were rumored to be in on Fiala, DeBrincat, Tkachuk, Gaudreau, and now Meier... missing out on every single one of them is worrying.

As many as it takes to find the right deal.

And I agree, I don’t give a f*** about 9 vs 8 or whatever. I’m solely concerned with giving away too much prospect and pick value.

I don`t see any problem to pay 18-18.5 mil for Bratt and Meier over our expected 16-17.5 mil. This 1.5 mil will not change the picture, Severson will hit the market, Devils will find cheap 3rd pair replacement before Nemec is ready.
If you commit 18M+ to Meier and Bratt, you're very little funds to spend on the depth, we will basically have to maneuver like Toronto for the rest of our contention window. If we do acquire Meier, I'd re-sign him for 8.5M/8 max (if he doesn't want, I stay out of the deal) and if Meier is indeed signed, I lowball Bratt (forcing him around 7M, if not, I trade him away). You can't sign two wingers to YOLO deals, not to mention that some cheap players or picks would likely be gone in the Meier deal, you're not getting him for free from SJ.

It's really not. Gaudreau was going to sign with us against his will until the last minute. Tkachuk and Fiala were only signing in one place and DeBrincat was said to test the UFA market in 1 year. Hard to blame Fitz here.

Oh, I would still absolutely do it. But there is a tradeoff that our depth suffers. It's not a totally painless move.
I believe Tatar, Yegor\Zetterlund and our ELC players will not eat much.

BTW team with Hughes, Nico, Meier, Mercer and Bratt should be very attractive for older players who wants to win cup and sign for food. It`s our time to cheat on "Spezza`s"

I will be disappointed if Big Z is part of the deal, but if that's what it takes, it's worth it.
I was fine giving him up for a signed Timo, I'd be loath to give him up for a rental Timo but they seem to like him more than our staff does at this point so if that's their die on a hill ask, vaya con dios.

You would sign a player from another team, then purposely lowball your homegrown talent (so he'd most likely leave)?

Glad you're not the GM.

Not necessarily today, but next year or the year after. I’m not sure where the holes will be but they’ll exist and need to be filled.

You don’t stay a sustainably competitive team by overpaying on deals simply because you can.
Goes back to the idea that maybe Holtz isn't as valuable as he once was. And maybe we are looking at these 1st rounders as in a similar vain as the 1st rounders of the last 10 years. These picks will be closer to the Bastians and Boq picks then the Hughes/Hughes or Nemec picks.

I would like to keep Zetterlund though. He actually helps us win games. Not sure about all those other assets.
