Toronto is another team that has made baffling choices. Don't they still have like 8 or 9 NHL defensemen on their roster right now? What happens if none of them get moved before the deadline?
At least they added players they think will help them win. These other teams aren't winning shit this year, not exactly selling, and in Pittsburgh's case acquiring bad players on bad contracts. I think the Canucks are over the cap next season too.

I like this trade the more I think about it. Was saying that forward depth was a higher priority than defensive depth coming into today. He's a guy you can plug into the lineup if/when injuries hit and he's not going to hurt you. Has nearly 500 games of NHL experience, including 24 games of playoff experience and by all accounts is a great locker room guy. Solid trade.

Fitz getting his work done early today as he has a flight to catch! He mentioned in interviews that he's heading up to Grand Rapids(?) tonight for a family weekend for one of his kids.

I`m pretty good with trade too. I understand we can draft player with potential in 4th round, but now we need defensive version of wood. And it`s protection if Mcleod or Haula will got injury.

From a purely theoretical video game like standpoint I would've moved Graves for a 1st and using that for McCabe. That'd never happen in reality though.

The games are a bit different, obviously there’s more intensity...but there is a bit of a BS narrative that they “let them play” more in the playoffs. There are more penalties in the playoffs.

Anyway, the big problem is the way people just automatically assume “small guy bad in playoffs” and “big guy good in playoffs”. It’s just not true, there are too many exceptions to list.
No, the second part is what people who always say "playoffs are no different" like to assume is being said because it's much easier to argue against.

The playoffs are different, literally everyone in and around the game says this. To say it's not just to win an argument about or defend a specific player at random times is weird.

Things can feel different without being meaningfully different on the ice.

Good regular season teams tend to be good playoff teams because being a good hockey team works in basically any hockey game. There’s not some magic formula to success come playoff time.

If we're done then I'm fine with this deadline. But I would love to add a veteran RHD who could play a regular shift if Doug/Marino/Sevs goes down.

Looks like the return was a 2025 4th rounder?

I think I would rather have had Namestnikov instead of Lazar, but maybe the salary didn't work?

Namestnikov is better but also he's making 2.5. We would've needed retention which would've upped the price. I also think either one would've been an extra F here so I'm fine with the cheaper one.

Edit: Scratch that half has already been retained so 1.25. So yeah maybe slightly better to go for Namestnikov but you also get 2 extra years for Lazar (milage on how much you think that matters will vary)

Namestnikov doesn't really improve the team this year in my opinion (is the team gaining anything if they put him in over wood / boq?) and he's a rental. Lazar is a bit of a nothing burger, but he's a cheap asset that can play a 4th line / 13th forward role for the next couple of years. He may actually provide something beneficial over the next couple of years. Namestnikov feels like it would have been a waste because there's no real net gain.

But man, what happened to that dude? He used to be a pretty solid producer.

Of course, but these are people at the end of the day. Mid season there is plenty of times we don't even realize where guys take their foot off the gas.

Loose puck, board battle, net front etc etc, you can still be in the play and not be going full tilt and not look out of place at all. In the playoffs, that never happens. Every inch and second of puck control at any point could mean the difference between the cup or golfing. Everyone on the ice knows it and plays like it. Every normal play is a battle.

Some entire mid season games matter less than a single loose puck in front of the net at times.

Yes, every team you play is really good, there is no denying that, but like every debate around here, that is not even close to the full story.
