Crazy that I forgot today was the deadline until I got here based on how insane the last 7 days has been.

Good point from Amanda. We might see some guys like Clarke, Schmid, or Bahl get assigned to Uitca today as a paper transaction just so that they're eligible to be sent down for the playoffs. Does not mean a move is imminent.

Are going to see the Devils add a goalie today or is Blackwood coming off IR? Schmid has to be sent to the AHL by 3 today to be eligible for the playoffs there. I imagine that is something they would like to do (same with Clarke), but isn't there a rule that teams have to have 2 goalies on their roster at all times and with Blackwood on IR then that's not the case. Maybe they are comfortable with Schmid up for the NHL playoffs so the AHL doesn't matter though. I suppose they could just call up the random SJ guy they got in the Meier trade, but I thought he was injured too.

Ty-Sevo was a really good pair in 2021. Luke is better than Ty and they'd facing softer usage than that pair did. Sure it's the playoffs so it's tougher but the positive should easily outweigh the negatives.

Playoffs are completely different story. You should know this.

i think fitz will be looking for a gudas-y type defenseman, but he’s not going to overpay for one. i’m perfectly content to stand pat.

The hand-wringing over Luke is just so annoying. Every other top NCAA defenseman has stepped in with no issue.

I know there are no guarantees. Of course it’s possible that Luke comes in and fails. The idea that he needs to be stapled to a Slavin level defender to not be a circus on the back end is utterly ridiculous.

I agree. He’ll get a shot as he’s legitimately the best D-man prospect in the world right now. Will it go 100% like Makar? I highly doubt it and that’s normal. But the over worrying about having him in the lineup over a Smith/Bahl type is a head scratcher for sure.

I know he didn't really have value but I'm assuming this comes with no retention which is why it's basically nothing rather than like a 3rd

Capfriendly now shows that this deal was actually with 50% retention. DET still only got a 7th round pick. I guess its cheaper for them to retain than buy him out this summer.

Fairly sure we can just make a paper transaction for 3pm and then recall him for tonight. Schmid is also still up on an emergency loan, so that may not even be needed.

Would take JVR for that price at 75%.

Would be good help on PP2 or even PP1 if injuries happen.

One bottom 6 forward with ability to play special teams and top 6 if needed would be nice. Depth defenseman too.

Doubt Philly wants to trade him to NJ and I have no clue how we'd fit him under the cap - would have to move someone out to make it work. Plus we don't have our 3rd round pick this year and a '24 3rd rounder would be much less attractive to Philly.

Okay but what if Luke gets hurt and doesnt make his debut this season? Would you like to add another D for insurance to play with either Smith or Bahl?

Our LD is now Sieg-Graves-Smith-Bahl-Hughes. One of those top 2 go down and its pretty thin. Much better situation on RD since Sevo can jump up.

Just put Luke with Marino and be done with it. I trust Marino with my life.

Siege-Douglas
Luke-Marino
Graves-Severson

I don't love Graves-Severson, but as a 3rd pairing I think they'd do quite well.

They could even scratch Bastian/Boqvist and roll 11-7 with Smith if they want to.
That’s a NASTY D-core. I’m suddenly all warm and fuzzy inside.

I am a bit worried Luke will be exploited defensively in the postseason. Don't think he's necessarily a lock to walk right into the lineup. If he's a major weakness then that might cost you a game in a 7 game series, where every defensive breakdown can have major ramifications.

But he can make game breaking plays to make up for mistakes. Brendan Smith can’t make a play that makes up for a horrible penalty that he’ll inevitably take.

they really aren't. I hate this trope.
This seems to be the weird hill you’ve elected to die on, but every single coach, player, and analyst that’s ever lived have agreed that there is a notable difference between regular season hockey and playoff hockey.

The refs call the games differently. That’s just the truth, a truth made self-evident to anyone who’s watched even a shrivel of playoff hockey post-06 lockout.

No, it’s not a totally different sport. But regardless of how many times you say “no it isn’t!!!!!” (since I’ve lost count and I’m certain you have too): playoff hockey is not officiated the same and thus not played the same as regular season hockey.

Yeah he's probably better than Smith overall, but he likely won't get PP time and I don't know what type of linemates he'll have...does he have to be protected? Does it make sense to put him up in the lineup and play with Hamilton and bring down Sieganthaler, or have him play on his off side with Sieganthaler?

You can play the "what if player X gets hurt" game for any player - not sure why you would randomly pick Luke.
