The Ducks claiming Harrington on waivers really screwed things up a bit. That was NHL defensive depth for the deadline that we would've been able to stash in Utica. Now we may have to give up another asset to get a similar defenseman. In hindsight, Fitz should've just kept him on the NHL roster through today when it expands - a rare Fitzy blunder (I think - though I'm open to arguments against it).
CapFriendly is saying we have $1.26M in cap space - though that includes having Clarke on the roster, so adding in his salary bumps that up to ~$2.11M. However, if we plan on adding Luke to the regular season roster once he's done at Michigan (which we should absolutely do to give him some NHL games before playoffs), then we need to have ~900K in cap space carved out for him - so I think we're looking at ~$1.21M in cap space available for any addition today unless we're also shipping someone out, which I don't think we should do.
At forward, we're basically looking at Boqvist or Sharangovich being the odd man out with everyone healthy, but then there's not much depth beyond that as Holtz and Clarke are next up, which you don't really want to see in the playoffs. After them - ??? Foote? Thompson? They at least have some NHL experience, but we're very thin. Johnsson wasn't much of a loss and had to be dealt for cap reasons, but at least you could've plugged him into the lineup and he wouldn't hurt you too much (wouldn't help you too much either). This is where you maybe could've used some AHL vets with NHL experience on Utica's roster. I guess there's also *shudders* Geertsen available as well if needed.
On defense, I'm really liking what Bahl has been doing lately and would be fine with him as the 6th defenseman and Smith as the 7th defenseman heading into the playoffs. They may not need to be though depending on how Luke looks as I could easily see him slotting into that spot. That's what Makar did, though I realize Luke (nor anyone else) is Makar. Beyond that you also have Nemec, who I think is a mighty fine #9 depth chart option, and Wotherspoon as a #10 - which if we get to that point then WTF. Anyway, would've felt better having Harrington in that mix, but I think we're largely good on defense.
I know Fitz has mentioned goalies, but I don't think you do anything there - are we really going to find anyone better than Vanecek, Blackwood or Schmid? Daws has a good amount of NHL experience as well - particularly for a #4 goalie on the depth chart.
I know GM's generally like to load up on defenseman at the deadline, but I think the bigger hole may be a depth forward. Or maybe Fitz gets a 3rd/4th liner that bumps somebody else down to create depth.
I really, really don't want to see our 2nd rounder in play today. With no 1st and no 3rd, I don't want to go into the draft not picking until the 4th round. As I mentioned previously, there will likely be a prospect that the Devils grade as a 1st rounder dropping towards the end of the 2nd round. If Fitz just makes a minor move for a 5th-7th round pick, I'm fine with that.
