WJC: 2023 Team Canada Roster Talk

I went through elite prospects.

Canada has had 2 17 year old goalies play for the team.

Brian Finley in 1998-99

Terry Wright in 1979-80

Neither Played more than one game.
I wouldn't count Wright given the way that Canada just sent the Memorial Cup champions at the time, but I did not clue in about Finley. Interesting.

Lol was he talking about Ty Voit?
No , about beck

He is a lock

If he doesn’t make the team I’ll gladly admit I was wrong. Hope others who think he is not a lock admit they were wrong when he makes the team ! I know I’m right.

I think the only problem people have is that you're so adamant saying "He is a lock" and "I know I'm right" when he's a younger guy with no history with Hockey Canada. Sure, he's got a good spot to be a depth player and that wouldn't surprise anyone, but he's really not a lock by any means.

I’m not sure if anyone saw him play at Montreal s training camp. But , he may make Montreal next year or the year after he was that good. I’m a Montreal fan and extremely happy for the pickup.

You're in a no win position because even if he makes the team, it doesn't mean that he was a lock.

Hockey Canada is loaded with talent that was close to making the NHL, DID make the NHL, or will next year, let alone the year after. That's why he's not a "lock"

A lot of people on the Habs board were saying the same about Joshua Roy last year. Beck is simply this year's Roy. He'll complete his junior years and will start in the AHL at 20. No need to rush him.

Yeah saying Beck might win a spot on the team? Entirely reasonable. Saying he is a lock? Ridiculous and just setting yourself up to be either mad, disappointed or both lol it is a rather deep forward group he is looking to break into this year as well.

I do not expect a 17 year old goaltender. I don't think that Canada has ever selected one, and I don't recall one ever being invited to camp. Hopefully there is some honest competition in the camp.
My homer pick is Dom Divencentiis in North Bay

They should also bring Jack Beck to double the total Beck power

Coming into the season I would have said that Jack Beck had an outside shot at a camp invite (he was at the summer camp iirc), but he had a somewhat disappointing start to his season, as far as goal-scoring is concerned. And he got concussed in late October and hasn't played since.

As far as Owen Beck is concerned, in all seriousness he has to have at least a reasonable chance of making the team. Its hard to tell what the coaching staff have in mind for the depth players towards the bottom of the roster, in terms of makeup, age, potential line combo's, and what kind of playstyle and skillsets they want out of their forward group as a whole. Our top-6/9 looks strong this year. Beck is on the bubble as far as I'm concerned and I wouldn't be surprised either way.

I’m hoping canada doesn’t galaxy brain themselves, but with no Russia and Swe/Fin/Us all having kind of a down set of years this tourney more so than usual seems like Canada’s to lose.

Then they've been much better about that recently than in years past, both in terms of selecting talent, and giving that talent ample time to move around in the lineup instead of shoe-horning every player into a specific role. Even Cameron gave Bedard lots of room to breathe on the national junior team(s) last year.

Before the camp roster is announced, anyone have any speculative/hot takes on inclusions in/omissions from the camp roster?

I'll start with maybe not the hottest of takes - Chase Stillman doesn't get a camp invite.

My hot take is 17 year old Colby Barlow does.
