WJC: 2023 Team Canada Roster Talk

The fact that Pronman hinted at no Savoie makes me think there may be no Savoie…don’t know why he would just say that randomly.

Apparently Owen beck and del Maestro are flying out to the camp

Savoie would be a surprise - but playing devils advocate here: if you can’t foresee him taking a spot in the top-6; where does he play.

He at the very least deserved an invite to camp in my opinion.

I am usually quite puzzled when they leave someone like Savoie out but not this year if, and only if, both Guenther and Wright are made available. In that case, the top 6 players will be better than Savoie, and I don't see a fit for him in the bottom 6.

Savoie is one of the best penalty killers in the WHL/CHL. He could very easily carve out a role there.

I can't believe this needs to be said every year, but the Canadian WJC team is not Top 6 / Bottom 6. This ain't the NHL.
I'm well aware. I've watched this tournament since the 1990s, but that is the Hockey Canada mentality when constructing this roster. They do not take a team full of all-stars; they like specific roles.

Obviously, they bring SOME guys that can check and kill penalties... but not six of them!

I feel like Ziemmer could be a dark horse invitee, although he wouldn't make the final cut

Exactly. Which is why there is plenty of room for pure scorers. No need to leave someone off if they can't fit in a supposed Top 6.

I find Canada has smartly moved away from the top 6, bottom 6 lineup construction mentality in recent years. There will be a few physical guys there, a few defensive guys, but there won't be a template with subpar players meant to fit specific roles like there was in the past.

I think Canada has evolved from a skill point of view. The CHL expanded greatly over the years giving more guys the opportunity to be the key offensive piece on their club team. Now we have to leave off a bunch of tremendously high scoring guys (as does the US, apparently  ). Gone are the days when we would frequently need our goalie to steal games for us.

I imagine that TC will be getting a few loans from NHL teams - that’s why only 29 players were named.

Very happy for Hinds. He is our best defenseman by far in Sherbrooke and he fully deserves strong consideration.

His stock will rise if he makes the team. Beastly defensively, smooth skater, very good with the puck.

I hope he can make the squad.

We will miss Roy and him if they make it, but meh, experience of a lifetime, Phoenix can afford to lose a few games.
