Canada was alright in the pre-tournament, not great but not terrible. Beat every other team, but none of those teams are that strong. Plenty of things to improve on, mainly getting the Stankoven line going and getting the defencemen to make simple and effective decisions clearing the puck.

Agreed, JackSlater.

The Stank line needs to be producing and more effective if this team is to win Gold.

Fantilli needs to find another gear, and most importantly, Guenther needs to turn into the sniper that line needs.

Guenther is getting himself into good spots, but my goodness is he fighting it right now. Everything looks difficult for him handling the puck.

I hope this pre-tourney game against Finland was a good wake-up call for the squad because there is a lot to clean up.

Yes I agree. Stankoven is not the player I am concerned about as he has generated chances. Fantilli has shown some good physical tools but he hasn't fit in the line. Guenther has, as you said, gotten into very good situations. His passing is awful though and other than a very nice snipe his shots have been lacking. He looks like a player returning from injury, but he wasn't injured. I'm more optimistic that things click for Guenther than I am for Fantilli, and if that line does little against the Czechs I could see Fantilli being moved to the fourth line. I would hope that Canada leaves Dean where he is on the third line since thus far that line works.

Finland is a weird team to lump into the category of teams that aren’t that strong. Even if they don’t have quite the roster of some recent seasons, they always play above their level, and give Canada everything they’ve got.

In my books, this was a solid win even though there remains room for improvement. Yes, that Stankoven line remains the key to us being truly dominant.

They are ranked second on some of the betting odds too that ORRF posted in his post from 'internet people'.

Finland doesn't get to be good just due to the name on the front. Did not look like a strong team to me in any of the pre-tournament games and the roster doesn't look strong. Going by how Canada played in those games and who Canada played, it was a mediocre pre-tournament. Which is fine, provided the team builds in the coming games

No, Finland doesn't get to be good due to the name on the front. They get to be good if they beat the other teams in the competition, but the problem is that they've only played two powerhouse teams. I thought they looked decent and played a fast game (and buried their chances better than we did), but just couldn't keep up in the end. Honestly, the credit goes to us for that.

I'm judging them based on how they played s far. Canada did not play a strong team last night. Finland might flip a switch and become great suddenly. I don't know what else to tell you, if you like how Finland has played then that is your choice.

I'm not! But I'm hoping we do manage to get at least one game out of him when it matters most.
Jack eichel got 7 points or so the second time around. They comparing Fantilli to eichel

But in all honesty he’s been pretty invisible so far. I think there were better players but we will see the end result I guess

Maybe it's just the Catholic in me but that is a nice angel avatar.

Finland always gets better as the tournament progresses.

Last night's game was a terrific test and Canada passed. Did they excel? No, but hopefully the challenge they received will pay dividends going forward.

Does Canada ever play their best in mean nothing games?

Usually no, sometimes yes. The pre-tournament results are not so important. Watching how the team plays and not just the boxscores once the tournament actually starts is more indicative of what the team will do.

I was pleased with last night. The last thing this team needed was an easy time of it. TBH, I would have been happy to lose.

You should take a closer look. or be a better catholic, perhaps? It is a pic of heroes defending their country and defending their freedom.

Pre tournament games are pre tournament games. They're simply exhibition games. You can't expect Canada bussing it 125% in exhibition games, the coaches don't want that to prevent injuries. These exhibition games are a small irrelevant sample size.

Button on the preview show saying that this team could be as good or better than the 2005 team. Had to laugh, he's a loyal shill. Merry Christmas, hoping for a gold soon... even if the team isn't the best ever.

Button is an idiot I’ve called him out on his dubious verbal diarrhea a few times

Big time imbecile and I don’t understand how he remains employed at tsn

But then again tsn has degenerated into a sesspool of raw turd 💩 garbagesports channel

MacTavish said he doesn't like to watch the save because he worries that, one of these times, the goal will go in. That made me smile because there are three saves where I feel the same way...

1) Carey Price's WJR shootout save against Patrick Kane in the semi's against the Americans in 2007 - Price closed his pads and twisted to keep it from crossing the line.

2) Luongo's save against Pavelski(?) in the O.T. of the Olympic GMG in 2010 - I can't believe how close Luongo came to letting that knuckleball get away from him. It makes me sick when I see it.

3) MacTavish's save - I still can't believe it stayed out. That puck goes in 99% of the time.

There is too much of an obsession with the 2005 team - I'm guilty of it, too. Everyone wants that magic repeated and the team is revered and referenced like the 1927 Yankees - check out TSN's pretournament special.

Not only did the 2005 team dominate the WJR's like no other, it gave birth to a team that was unbeatable on the world stage for the next dozen years. I'm not sure we'll see that, again, so it might be best to put the comparisons to rest.

You just know that, once Hockey Canada gets past all the scandals and both they and TSN get all their sponsors back, the hype will be off the charts bonkers insane. Nothing will be sacred. And hockey players will be naughty again sometime in the future, but they will all turn a blind eye to it and go hush hush. We have money to make. The grand cycle of like.

Merry Christmas, JS. to you and the fam. Enjoy. Hopefully it's a GMG on Jan 5 Team Canada vs. USA.

The whole TSN pre-tournament show is designed to hype interest in the tournament and Button, who loves making (in his mind) bold, big predictions is the head hyper.
