Since it seems the Ducks will likely finish bottom 5 this year, I figured we should have a thread for discussing the implications of where the f***s will finish in the standings. As well as what factors could affect where they finish.

Tonight was interesting as all bottom 5 teams earned 2 points sans the Ducks and the Hawks.

Hey Folks,

Want to clear some of the air here, Tank talk is not an issue, please talk tank to your heart’s content here, totally understand how critical it is for that Future Potential Top pick. The issue is posting in the GDT, like you want the team to lose or make posts that you are angry they are winning or won the game, or bashing the team for not tanking.

The main reason is, to respect your fellow members. The GDT is about discussion of the game on a live basis and then post game discussion and opinions. A lot of fans are not rooting for the team to lose, and everyone has their views and opinions towards tanking, and may not want to discuss tanking in the GDT

If you guys have any concerns, feel free to PM me or another mod, and would be happy to explain more in detail.

Thanks!

Leo

Absolutely cannot do another year like this one. No secretly rooting for losses. No hoping for Chicago to win…blah. Just leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Was pleasantly surprised our youth call up Dmen might be ready for action sooner than advertised. Us having simply a below average Defense would be so much better than record for most shots against and was it 10th or 15th worst all time minus rating overall despite at least average goaltending.

Same. I'm not interested in going through this again. Regardless of who is available in the draft. There's a grab bag of potential franchise players this year, we need to start building a winning culture after we put our hand in that bag.

I hate the fans being split like this. Yeah we all know what’s best for the team, but it just feels so guilty to want them to lose. As I said in the GDT, this was a very satisfying loss, because it was a good close game, and our kids looked very good, and got on the scoresheet.

One more regulation loss would be enormous. It's awesome that we can't be passed by the Sharks (absent a Sharks lottery win) but I'm still crossing my fingers hoping that we can finish 31st or 32nd.
See? I told you we’d be behind the Sharks. :naughty:

There’s no way LA isn’t going to try to obliterate us Thursday so they can keep the 3rd seed.

Don't get me wrong. I really don't like that I'm rooting for losses. I really don't. It's just that the opportunity before us, to me, is far more valuable than a couple late stage wins in a turd of a season that we'd forget by next week.

100%. Even finishing second last guarantees Michkov or better, that's nuts.

Lacombe looked really good. Like in my head I believed he was fairly in another tier compared to Minty, Zell, and Jamie, but for a first game I thought he showed a lot of good promise.

I wanted to visualize this for myself and I'm still buzzing about the win loss.

So a regulation loss to LA would:

Guarantee us at least 31st and fourth overall minimum regardless of how anyone else does
Guarantee us last place and third overall minimum if the Blue Jackets pick up 1 loser point in either of their final two games

With a loser point against LA

We can lock in 31st place (4th ovr) with a Chicago overtime loss or win against Philadelphia or a CBJ win or two CBJ OTLs
We can lock in last place (3rd ovr) with a Chicago OTL and a CBJ win or two OTLs

With a win against LA

We can lock in 31st place (4th ovr) with a Chicago win against Philly or two CBJ wins or a CBJ win and an OTL

We can still finish last place (3rd ovr) with a combination of the two above scenarios triggering. CBJ would need three points, Chicago 2.

Outlook of CBJ and Chicago's remaining schedule:

Only six teams matter to us at this point: CBJ, CHI, LA, PIT, BUF and NYI,

Chicago (1 game vs PHI) is playing with unmistakable effort likely in a bid to send Toews off with a couple of wins. Last place Columbus took the Flyers to OT tonight so it's entirely possible that Chicago can walk away with at least one if not two points.

Columbus (2 games against PIT and BUF). If the Islanders beat the Habs or get an OTL, which they are almost guaranteed to do (as a single point clinches their playoff spot and Montreal sucks), it could leave the Penguins demoralized going into their game against Columbus as they'd be eliminated. Pittsburgh is still clearly the better team but there's a greater than zero chance that Columbus could steal a point or two.

Buffalo is already eliminated and will have played four games in five days with one rest day, tomorrow. Columbus is the second of a back to back with the first game being against the Senators. Buffalo got smoked by the Devils tonight so it's possible they'll be worn down by game 82 so another viable chance for Columbus to pick up a point or two.

EDIT: LA is playing us at roughly the same time as Seattle (7pm vs 7:30pm, Seattle starts after LA). So they're probably going to play to secure their spot in the top 3 of the Pacific.

The best thing the Ducks can do is lose in regulation to LA. But it's not unthinkable that they could get some more help from Columbus and Chicago

It's good that the Seattle game is basically going on at the same time as ours on Thursday. Kings won't be able to construct their lineup or play a certain way if they don't want to risk losing out on that spot.

Well kings are fighting for third..
The Kings and Kraken's final games are at the same time on the same day, so I'm leaning toward LA will be fighting for the win.

EDIT: Actually not quite. LA starts at 7pm pst. Seattle starts at 7:30. If LA wants to secure their spot they have to get the win before Seattle plays out their third period. Can't really look over their shoulders unless the Knights blow the Kraken out. Or LA doesn't give a shit about dropping to the wild card.

I know everyone else is hoping for a loss on Thursday, but I'm hoping Chicago and Columbus win out and we destroy the kings on Thursday and knock them into a wild card spot

After the season we had, we can hope for one "small" thing, right?

Just a minor correction...the Islanders only need one point in their game against Montreal to clinch a playoff spot. If they get to OT, they're in. That's good for us.

I'll take the one "small" thing being a winning lottery ball...

If we win in any fashion we can't finish 1st.

My thoughts are we are developing for the next two seasons, but we are adding talent to the blue line as well as have blue line talent depth.

2022-23, Phase 1: Forwards
This year was all about our forward development. Can Z and Terry reproduce their offense from last year? Check. Can McTavish look like a legitimate top-6 center? Check. Can Lundy duplicate his season from last year? Nope. Jones' activity and high motor is great for us this year. Comtois is out.
The Ducks' youth blue line this year is meh, aside from Drysdale, with Benoit and Vaaks. Our other new vets in White, Beaulieu, Klingberg, and Kulikov weren't great defensively.

2023-24, Phase 2: Defense
Drysdale lost a year. We could start next year with Drysdale, LaCombe, and Helleson at the AHL level. It's another development season, but with better blue line talent. How much better remains unknown.
We need to develop the defenses of Minty and Zellweger in the AHL. 6'3 Hinds is a defensive specialist who developed offense in the past two and a half seasons in the CHL. Hinds might be the first call-up or rotation if Helleson slips up in the NHL. Dark horse could be Andersson, if he's re-signed and stays healthy.
At forward, we're looking to see if McTavish can take it to another level. We could have Bedard, Fantilli, or Carlsson make their way to the pro side, but I think only Bedard comes over straightaway after the draft. In the AHL, we need to start seeing something of LW Tracey and RW Perreault. Gaucher gets his skates wet at the AHL level.

2024-25, Phase 3: Defense
We should at least see one of Minty, Zell, or Hinds make their way to the NHL level. At the AHL level, Luneau and Warren make their way. It's possible that that Moore makes his way to the pro side. Moore is a very good skater and shutdown D with some offense.
At forward, Gaucher could make a push to the NHL level, but there's no rush if Lundy and Groulx are in the system still. If we drafted Fantilli or Carlsson, they are headed to the pro side, but dunno if at the NHL level or AHL level. Hvidston makes his way to the AHL.

2025-26, Phase 4: Time to add talent from outside the org via FA or trade.
We should have a grasp on what our defense is by now as well as accumulate more prospects that we can start trading far futures or draft picks for NHL top talents to make the push into Cup contenders.
