Its about principles it seems.

This is what I'm thinking, seeing how they could afford the insurance on Silfverberg (who is making $5.25 mil) while Lundestrom (making $1.8 mil) isn't on the roster, yet. But maybe he was invited and is injured, or maybe his invitation comes now that EP won't be on the team.

If they can’t overcome their principles to fund this, then I don’t know why tre kronor is worth following. If its just about the money I can’t see how they couldn’t get it crowdfunded.

Its apparently not about the sum but their principles.
This is silly.

Principles, as in if Pettersson gets paralyzed playing for them then they don't want to pay for the costs long-term?

Who should pay for that? Canucks? That doesn't make any sense.

Should Pettersson go without that insurance? That’s beyond moronic.

It's all about the money and not wanting to pay for something as obvious as players insurance when you can hide behind principles.

Put it this way: David Pastrnak played in this tournament a year ago. Before signing his long-term contract. Czechia paid for his insurance. Why is this a problem now? Money.

I honestly don’t know what their problem is. Its beyond moronic Sweden hasn’t had the chance to ice a forward as good as Pettersson for 20 years. So to not pony up and pay in this case ”because you don’t make exceptions” is criminally stupid. Guess we’ll se if they try to crowdfund it to find an out.

Yes, it's about money. And it's not health insurance we're talking about, but securing his NHL contract value. Therefore young top players like Pettersson cost top dollar, at some point they're just not worth inviting.

I read the same in the Finnish papers last week which arouses my curiosity. How does Canada get away with it? Take a look at their roster in 2015 for example. Riddled with stars and nobody watches the tournie in Canada.

I don’t get it according to Sportbladet the insurance was going to cost between 2-3 msek. They could easily crowdfund that if its just about the money.

So time to update this

I don’t get it according to Sportbladet the insurance was going to cost between 2-3 msek. They could easily crowdfund that if its just about the money.
In an individual case probably, but even the NHL teams themselves don't fully insure their contracts as it would be much too expensive to do so. For the national teams and federations it's very difficult to plan their finances when two weeks before the games start they still have no idea how much the insurance fees of NHL players will ultimately cost them. And as you point out these can at times be hundreds of thousands of dollars each. For the fans it's understandably frustrating when it's the biggest names that will be cut first, but irrational it truly isn't.

You pay the insurance so that you don’t have to worry about the long term costs? I understand there will be a deductible if he gets hurt, but they will be told what the deductible is when making the deal. So they should know roughly what the worst case scenario is.

If they can’t overcome their principles to fund this, then I don’t know why tre kronor is worth following. If its just about the money I can’t see how they couldn’t get it crowdfunded.

Money.

I don't have enough information to have a strong opinion, but can defenitely see SIF's point of view if they feel the Canucks is neglecting the agreement that the NHL has in place with the IIHF. An agreement is an agreement, afterall. You allow the Canucks, Pettersson and his agent to use a loophole, you're potentially opening up for many other NHL clubs to do the same in the future, which could not only hurt SIF and Team Sweden, but also other federations and national teams when wanting to bring NHL'ers over.

As for Pastrnak, did Czechia actually pay the insurance for his not yet signed extension? Or they only payed for the insurance that was in the then present deal. Because as I understand it, that's the issue here with Sweden, Pettersson and the Canucks.

Either way, no matter who's right and who's wrong, this is truly a bad look for hockey.

In that case Pettersson could simply go play and refer to the agreement between the IIHF and the NHL if they try anything.
And if they treat him like this I don’t understand why he’d ever wanna sign a new contract with them.

From reading the article several times over trying to grasp it, my understanding is that yes, Petterson could indeed play in the WC, if he'd accept his invitation and agree to the insurance fee being payed for his current contract.

But the way things are phrased in the article, it's not only the Canucks that wants the additional insurance for a contract extension he has yet to sign, but also Pettersson himself wants it. Or more likely his agent wants it, or convinced Petterson it's important he doesn't go without it.

Would be interesting to know if Petterson/his agent are asking for special treatment here, or if this has happened before with other players.

Johan Stark has commented on it, btw: Ishockey: Generalsekreteraren John Stark om försäkringen som stoppar Elias Pettersson

There doesn't seem to be an agreement, but rather recommendations, from the IIHF that you insure current contracts.

He keeps hammering home that they(& other nations) insure contracts that actually exist, and if they have to pay for that they'll handle it.

Well if we dont have money to bring over EP then we will not have money to bring over Hedman, zibby, Kempe, arvidsson and whoever that might be avibable. Another shit year with qf loss if we even reach qf.
