We might get relegetedetgeretf. Only good thing will be Leo Carlsson. Oh wait no, let me guess, Joel Kellman or some other will have his spot.

Johan Stark has commented on it, btw: Ishockey: Generalsekreteraren John Stark om försäkringen som stoppar Elias Pettersson

There doesn't seem to be an agreement, but rather recommendations, from the IIHF that you insure current contracts.

He keeps hammering home that they(& other nations) insure contracts that actually exist, and if they have to pay for that they'll handle it.
Wait..

Eh screw this. I’m done thinking about it. If there is a way they’ll know what it will cost to insure him then I’ll join the crowdfunding campaign.

Hallam thinks it William Nylander joining. He, just like everyone else, assumed Leafs got kicked out of the stanley cup. Imagine the look on his face when he realises its Alexander Nylander.

Berggren - Carlsson - Raymond
Silfverberg - Lindberg - A Nylander
Möller - Pär Lindholm - Lang
Brännström - De la Rose - Sörensen
Sylvegård, Petersson

Sandin - L.Bengtsson
Tömmernäs - Pudas
Aktell - Persson

Lasse Johansson
Högberg
Söderström

So...if there was a best on best tournament...we would not have money aswell to bring over our best players? Imagine that. We would be the worst team in the entire tournament. SHLers with a few mediocer NHLers against superstars from NHL.

Swedish hockey is dead.

We should forfeit the tournament and save up money for next year instead. I don't wanna watch De La Rose fail at hockey, knowing Pettersson could have been there if they hadn't been cheapskates.

From SVT's website:

Google translate for any foreigner wondering:

In Pettersson's case, insurance is needed both for his current contract and the future one. In total, it would cost the association over five million kroner, according to information given to SVT Sport.

"It would be completely unreasonable for the association to pay that money, spending five million on a player is completely unthinkable. It's not on the world map, so it's totally right by them. If you open Pandora's box here, you will never be able to go back", says SVT Sports expert Jonas Andersson.

Crowdfund it!

No but seriously, there is no real reason to care about hockey for Europeans anymore. The NHL is sucking all the life out of all hockey tournaments they don’t organize themselves. There is no market here, therefore there is no money here. International hockey is dying, and I don’t think its coming back. In the coming decades NHL protectionism will slowly convert hockey into solely a North American phenomenon and then finally a canadian phenomenon and then it will die.

I don't think anything good about SIF, but if the EP is the first case where an NHL club asks to pay for something that has never happened before and actually violates the existing contract between the IIHF side and the NHL, then I won't put money on the table. Because the same case will appear again over time, if SIF has money for insurance for other players from the first round, it is a good thing that they will not pay over five million crowns.

If its a one time thing then it could actually be crowdfunded.

Is it really Canucks that is causing the issues here? Since the potential future contract is not signad yet, there is no financial risk for them. The risk is rather Petterssons, he risks not getting the biggest contract of his career. I'd wager it is Pettersson and his agent wanting this extra insurance. Not that I blame him, he stands to lose his retirement money if gets a career ending injury.

Still too uncertain and quite financially demanding for the future of playing hockey at the World Championship. I respect your opinion, I also think that it is a challenge and that SIF could take this risk and pay and EP to play. Now it's just a matter of if SIF doesn't screw it up and pay up, or we'll be watching another boring and lifeless tournament with a QF elimination.

I don’t necessarily think so. If you frame it like ”swedish hockey fanatics ship in to pay Petterssons insurance” it is quite decidedly a one time thing. Plus I think it might deter NHL clubs trying to block their players from the WHC knowing that there are fans crazy enough to do this. I’m not saying the SIF should take this risk, but a hockey fanatic with a significant following could.

They made is sound like it's both: EP40, & the Canucks.

The way I see Canucks pushing for it making sense is them knowing a country would never accept to paying it, so it's blocking a player from potentially getting injured. Why does that matter so much? Well, if they can't reach an agreement with EP, they'll have to trade him, and trading an injured player...

It might end up not being worth it for Vancouver EP might get pissed. Lets hope he doesn’t sign a new contract there so he can actually win a cup.
Pettersson doesn’t want to play in a meaningless tournament and get injured, sorry dude.

He’ll get his money he deserves in Vancouver and play in one of the most beautiful cities in North America with 2 hall of famers the Sedins to mentor him for the next 10+ years and have a chance to be captain.

Dude, you’re the one who decided to shit on Vancouver and call them terrible place a couple of pages ago. I’m just responding to that.

you do realize Vancouver has a strong Swedish presence. I’m not even attacking Sweden, you’re the one attacking Canada

f*** you I don’t give a shit aboooooot your smug canadian opinions.
Yeah, that says a lot about you. Grow up.

You’re the one going into a swedish WC roster thread calling it a meaningless tournament not even realizing your being a disrespectful asshole.

I watch WC just as much anybody else.

For Pettersson it is meaningless. Due to the Canucks situation, management wants players to focus on the next season. I wouldn’t be surprised if they asked for more liability for his insurance… he’s the franchise player and world class, do you think it’s easy to play in a tournament after finishing an 82 game season?

He will have a chance to play again one day
