How can a Jekyll and Hyde team like Caps look like world-beaters at home; and suck so badly on the road?

Probably their best game of the season last night to dump Cascadia rival Seattle Sounders 2-0. But so far 0-3 on the road.

The whole league is like that to an extent. It has to be travel-based, because MLS skews even more toward the home team than international leagues, with none of the usual reasons (harassment, threats, bags of pee, etc.)

Hasal is a mid keeper. Never seen a professional football keeper get lost so much.

edit: Bad third goal there as well. Just unable to hold onto the ball.

I don't how the MLS works with expansion teams, or how first-year teams usually play......but that game last night against the expansion St. Louis was so ugly, it was almost comical. An 'own-goal' and two complete fumbles by the 'Caps keeper.

St. Louis now 8-1-2, while the Whitecaps are 4-5-5. It's almost as odious a comparison as the Seattle Kraken and the Vancouver Canucks.

Isn't is supposed to be embarrassing when a team that didn't even have any players six months ago, hands you your lunch?

Yes, but both the Canucks and Whitecaps (at least MLS era) have organizational trauma going back a long time, and corrupt/immoral ownership on top of that.

I'd much rather be a clean slate expansion side than a cursed franchise with blunder after blunder in its history. There's a youthful, exciting energy that an expansion side has that is really hard to mimic in a failure club that has been around a while.

Almost every MLS expansion team in recent years (minus Cincinnati) has been successful off the hop. Remember the league isn't at the top of the world pyramid, so it's always possible to draw in talent from elsewhere -- you are not really starting at a disadvantage. In the late '90s (when MLS was considerably lower level than now) the Chicago Fire won the championship in their first year.

St. Louis also has a fabulous stadium/supporter setup... that has also been a theme, almost every new team has an incredible fan environment. Much more so than a lot of the established clubs.

I used to enjoy watching the Whitecaps so much..Now they are rarely on TV and tonight's performance.. the defending looks like low end men's senior league.. Is anyone watching this?

Who needs defense when you can pop in 6 goals a game? :naughty:

I was actually at the game tonight and the defense was pretty awful to behold. But the game was pretty damn entertaining, all in all.

That result was the most satisfied I've been as a Caps fan since that 4-1 win against the Sounders in 2013 lead by Manneh's hat trick.

Yeah - after I wrote it, the Dynamo gave us a hold my beer moment and doubled down on hilarious defending.

Why can't this team play like this on the road? Though that the worst defending I have ever seen by a football team...lol Houston.

The talent level in the league is better than ever before...? It's half the reason teams like the Whitecaps stumbled from competent to barely keeping their head afloat as more and more high-priced talent started flowing in and they were left behind.

The league is clearly on the rise either way, expanding at a (frustratingly fast) pace and a lot of ownership groups wanting in. It's a far cry from what it was in its origins. Attendance isn't half bad either, especially in the newer markets. Somehow Atlanta -- an oft-criticized sports town -- continues to rake in loads of soccer fans.

It's been sad as a Vancouver fan to see the city fall from one of the more prominent soccer markets in the continent to a total also-ran in one of the least-appealing facilities in the league. Seeing the enthusiasm in non-obvious places like St. Louis and Charlotte has been a real gut punch.

I recall St. Louis being a very good soccer market way back in the NASL days, but my memory could be playing tricks ...

I wake up every weekend to watch the EPL.

I’ve tried to watch the Whitecaps but they’re so terrible I just couldn’t get into it.

When given free tix by the team, my son witnessed them diving and faking injury for 30 minutes in some kind of semi-final which they eventually lost. We decided we didn’t need to see that again.

There are tons of soccer/football fans in Vancouver, if the product was even decent, there would be huge support.

It really does feel that the owners have dropped the ball here and may never recover from it.

If your standard is the top league in the world, you’re in for a whole lot of disappointment most everywhere.

Places all over the world, from Wrexham to small towns in Central America, love to get out to support local teams at a level far below MLS. It’s not truly just about quality of play. (And they all sell fouls, including in England).

If any local soccer fans have become a bit jaded by the Whitecaps, the CPL club Langley, Vancouver Football Club, is a great alternative, It's pretty decent quality football at an affordable price in an intimate (if bare bones) stadium. If anybody is nostalgic for the Whitecaps' early seasons at Empire, this sort of has that feel.

There's a derby tonight as well, as Pacific is in town from Victoria. Should be a fairly good atmosphere tonight, and I believe tickets are available starting at $15.

I want to support the CPL club but the adult tickets are actually $25-70 which is ridiculous for that level. MLS is only a few bucks more.

Whitecaps have been decent quality this year and they've been playing mostly entertaining football. Describing them as "so terrible" is pretty bizarre. Of course it's not going to be EPL quality football. The product itself is decent this year. That said, the owners suck and have bungled any goodwill the fans might have had left for the brand/culture.

Whitecaps season neatly encapsulated into two halves of the blowout win over Houston Dynamo.

After a first half which coach Vanni Sartini described as one his team's worst of the season, they poured it on in the second and coasted to a 6-2 result.

I guess that's just the reality of the 2023 Whitecaps. Like Forrest Gump's proverbial box of chocolates you just have no idea of what you're going to get from half to half; much less from game to game.

I still have no idea what they saw in this guy. Really struggles to anticipate attacks and pointlessly makes random sprints up the pitch. He may be 6'2 but his jumps are hilarious.

The franchise panicked about losing Ali Adnan and shelled out their pocketbook to a complete joke of a striker.

There's not really much to be optimistic about regarding him. He was a suspect signing from the beginning. Horrible scouting. The money could have been utilised much more wisely.

Whitecaps are hard to cheer for, and Van FC isn't even a soccer club, its a Private Equity play by a couple of ex CMNT players and a rich guy. BC League 1 is doing well Altitude FC in North Van get 500 people out with a beer tent.
