Who is the next Russell Wilson?

And if you’re the Patriots, do you consider getting involved with him?

I stay away. Far, far away.

These guys rarely work out.

As scary as the prospect of finding the next guy in the draft is, I’ll take it over mortgaging the future for the next washed up veteran.
Wilson would immediately make the Pats better, so I don't know why you wouldn't consider it, other than a personal dislike for the guy.

At the moment, the bigger question is whether or not Wilson would want to come to New England vs another team. There's way too many question marks with that team, and he'll get plenty of interest elsewhere.

What’s your take on Mayfield as a FA here

I think he is

I think Tampa isn't going to risk losing Mayfield and put the offense in Kyle Trask's hands. I think the Glazers will go and extend him. As much as I would like Mayfield's Jeff George esque antics, I don't think we will see him in Patriots blue.

He would be fun here I think

But agree he probably stays in Tampa

To me, Wilson falls under the same section as Cousins. Both make the team better, but the rest of the team has so many other issues that I don't see a path to contention, so you're just delaying the rebuild. They've already wasted 4 years post-Brady because they refused to do a full rebuild. It's time to accept that's necessary and get to it rather than just wasting more time.

I get your point, but having decent QB play (decent, not stellar) makes it a hell of a lot easier to more accurately assess your skill positions on offense. Having a guy under center who can pick up an offense quickly and do a reasonable job of executing it, is one less variable you have to worry about while you are rebuilding your line and skill positions.

Because he's washed up and at a minimum you're on the hook for $35m against the cap next year and $55m the next.

And all together, his remaining cap hits are 35m, 55m, 58m, 53m, 54m

Not if he's released...

Ignore those numbers. Nobody is trading for him. He's going to be a FA, so the next team will sign a new contract.

Depending on where the pick lies, I'd for sure sign Russ to a cheap show me kind of deal, move on from Mac. You'd hope you're in range to get MHJ in the draft as the new #1 weapon, but we've probably screwed that pooch so I'd do the unsexy thing and take Fashanu to remake the offensive line. At that point you'd make a strong play for Mike Evans or Tyler Boyd in free agency.

If Wilson is good again, you're set for a couple years. If he tanks, it's a low commitment like Cam Newton and you'd be in position to get the next QB in the 2025 draft, which seems to be a better QB draft than 2024.

There’s one thing you don’t do if you’re trying to build a winner and that’s sign Russell Wilson

Pats are eliminated from getting the 1st overall pick this week with a win or a Panthers loss, or are they already eliminated due to tiebreaks?

"Ahead" of the Pats (3-12):
Cards at Eagles should be a blowout for the Eagles but who knows with the Eagles recently...

Same record (4-11):
Commanders should get blown out by the visiting Niners

Just "Behind" the Pats (5-10):
Chargers at Broncos is a toss up to me
Titans at Texans same
Giants should lose to the visiting Rams, but wouldn't be surprised with a win.

For as mediocre as the Bills have been this season I believe Miami will lose to Baltimore and Buffalo will beat the Pats. So las week of the season 11-5 Miami vs. 10-6 Buffalo. Winner would then lock up the #2 seed since a Buffalo win makes them division winners and they would have the tiebreak on an 11-6 KC. I would anticipate Dolphins/Bills as the Sunday night game. I guess possibly Colts/Texans if that will determine who makes playoffs.

If I had to predict:

AFC:

1. Baltimore
2. Buffalo
3. Kansas City
4. Jacksonville
5. Cleveland
6. Miami
7. Houston

@quietbruinfan sorry but I think the Dolphins are gonna lose the next two games and Cleveland will beat the Bengals.
