Best players on their teams at that level are usually the SS.

HS SS basically just means they’re the best player on their HS team, doesn’t mean they won’t eventually move off the position. The majority of the time they do.

SS is the most versatile and athletic. A good one can easily be moved to 2B or 3B, or even learn the OF. A lot of middle infielders wind up finding a role elsewhere on the diamond (Mookie was drafted as a 2B, for example). But you will never, ever draft a left fielder and then teach him how to play a middle infield position. Only guy in my knowledge who ever did that was Craig Biggio who was a complete anomaly who went from catcher to OF to Gold Glove 2B.
