You act like he just signed that deal

Clearly no team valued him at a long term deal like that.

My guess is somewhere along the way, Bruins offered 3 or 4 years at 4.5/5 mil a year. Agent thought better was out there, and it wasn't.

Once they realized long term wasn't a thing, Bruins had used their space to fill out the roster.

Hard to fault Sweeney here.

All these frustrations now are because the bill has come due for that awful UFA summer 2021.

14 mil spent on Grzelcyk Forbort Reilly Foligno, which then put us over-budget to face a 4.5 mil cap penalty.

Basically we are still attached to 14.5 million bloat from those decisions today.

So yes, Sweeney's "hands are tied" but the frustration is that he did it himself.
In large part, but drafting and developing players that can come in and contribute in meaningful ways can mitigate those missteps.

Agreed. I never thought we'd see anything but the sweaty ass crack that we got yesterday.

But it didn't have to be this way. There was an avenue to something a little risky, but also exciting and sporting potential. My fault for maintaining a little hope

No, it didn't. But many of us have been hoping Sweeney would be axed for 8 years now. We've seen him long enough to know who he is, and unfortunately the moments of false hope disguised that for some people.

I'm not here to re-hash the past, but I've been counting down the hours since the night of June 26th, 2015 waiting for Jacobs to figure out what some of us knew all along.

Lol ok whoever you want to call 1C or 2C your semantics do not matter to me- would you rather play on Toronto’s top line or Boston’s top line as a pending UFA?

You know the answer and that’s why you didn’t answer the question.
No I didn't answer, because I wasn't going to engage in your effort to widen the goalposts.

My argument was NEVER the better destination for Bertuzzi on a one-year contract.

It was against this excuse that the Bruins never could have signed Bertuzzi in the first place because they never could have worked the cap. There were ways to do it and I'm disappointed we won't get a chance to see them.

And I'm even more disappointed that this Plan B was done without any consideration for why they lost in the post-season and without any direction for a team desperately in need of one.

Again, what do you expect the GM to do here?

They offered whatever they offered, agent says no we want more money/term. They go to UFA, don't find it, take best situation to try to cash in next year.

Sweeney smartly pivoted to actually fill out the rest of the roster.

This isnt playstation with the cap off.

whatever. all the BS of last week trading Hall to keep Bertuzzi will be replaced with new BS this week

Marchand is 35. Can we really pencil in a big bounce back year? He has a lot of miles on those tires. They would have been best suited trading him and DeBrusk and Ullmark for prospects.
Move Ullmark and/ Marchand and try it be a package or packages with Forbort and or Gryz ,best to hold onto DeBrusk for now , see how the season and possible signing will go and if negative at trade deadline then consider offers for him........

Ok so did you want him back for significant term? Because he was never coming back here for a year if Toronto was another option. Unless you topped Toronto’s offer, which they are in no position to be doing. Because that would require them to move assets to accommodate him on a 1 year deal. And that 1 yr deal will be pointless because we ain’t winning the cup next year and he’ll cash out and go to the highest bidder when teams have way more space next summer. So you lose assets for nothing. Haven’t we had enough of that?

If you wanted him back for 5/6/7 years then fine, it just seems to me that would be the type of move everybody complains about after it doesn’t work out on here. Seems like the bruins wanted him back for 3 years and were entirely unwilling to go beyond that. If anything that seems to me they’re learning.

And you can say it’s “widening the goalposts” all you want, my entire point when I said Coyle was 1C is that Toronto’s top line is a much more attractive option to hitch your ride to if you want a huge deal next year. Believe it or not that doesn’t change if you slot Zacha in

ppl hate reality so bad. “Why didn’t the bruins do that??????” as if they can make a guy sign on the dotted line

Right now our 1C is Coyle and he’s gonna ride shotgun with Matthews to his new fat contract instead. I don’t blame him!

1C is Zacha if anything and he would be playing with Pastrnak. Toronto doesn't play offense-only anymore, either. Either option, Boston or Toronto is similar. If anything NJ is the team to chase stats with this season - offense only.

Ok so you think Boston’s top line production will be no different than Toronto’s top line. That is certainly an opinion, it’s not one I agree with but nonetheless you’re entitled to it!

I hope you’re right!

So you made an assumption and it ended up being wrong?

Anybody with eyes could see that the Bruins were going to have to move mountains to keep that guy. Even with the Hall trade and the Reilly buyout they still had to scrape the bottom of the barrel and fill out the roster.

They haven’t even signed their RFAs yet.

There's plenty to criticize over the course of Sweeney being the GM, but please explain how the players failings are the GMs issue.

They should've won in 19, and they totally pissed down their leg this past season after Sweeney gave them a wagon of a roster.

The bill finally came due , not sure what people expected to happen here.

Since the cap didn't rise over the past few years, there simply isn't any room around the league to ditch parts like Forbort, etc without attaching high picks to do so. It's not an exclusively Bruins thing, it's a league wide trend this offseason.
No one is debating how screwed the bruins are in cap. I’ve posted many times already saying that no matter what we did it wasn’t going to make us cup contenders going into this next year. What’s gross is signing the trash that we did and watching someone you gave multiple picks to acquire sign with the leafs. Are centers are so so bad. I’m next year will be very hard.
