We will see. Leonard could be the pick. I think the main HuGo target is Smith, but I don't think he is there past 4. I think Wood is the backup pick, and if not available, then Leonard. I doubt Montreal draft the usual players discussed in this thread (e.g., Benson, Reinbacher, Dvorsky and Michkov). One thing that is rarely discussed is the personality of players, which is critical in a market like Montreal. Hughes hinted at this in a recent interview, preparing the fans IMO for a pick that will not be well received (e.g., Wood). Take a look at a Wood interview, and you will see a mature player, very different compared to guys like Caufield, Kotkaniemi, Galchenyuk, and Slafkovsky. More in the Suzuki mold, although Suzuki is in a class of its own in this regard.

I think Dvorsky is the pick long before Leonard and as much as I like Wood it will take a monster set of balls to take him at 5......maybe 7 but that would still be gutsy.

I am not convinced that Leonard will score in the NHL as he is clearly benefitting from playing with two great offensive minds in Perreault and Smith. I actually like Leonard the least of the three as I think his upside is much lower than the other two.

As of right now here is where I am at for the top 7

1. Bedard
2-3. Fantilli, Carlsson
4-6. Michkov, Dvorsky, Smith
7. Wood/Perreault/Reinbacher

I currently have 4 tiers that the top 9 slot into. I value hockey IQ and puck skills more than anything else and I like forwards who are both shooting and passing threats. Poor character always disqualifies high picks for me as well as low upside. I really don't like taking forwards high who aren't good shooters unless they have the size and puck protection skills to play closer to the net.

Just my opinion, I have been wrong enough to know better than to dig in on this but right enough to feel some level of confidence. I will be really shocked if we don't end up with one of these players.

It just so happens that he's also a fantastic shooter. He didn't really get to uncork many bombs this tournament because Truitt had him standing in front of the net.
Absolutely, he also had trouble finding enough time and space in college to lean into more shots. Taking Wood high means that you are betting on him significantly improving his skating and if he does, time and space will not be an issue.

1. Smith may go 2nd or 8th
2. Agree
3. Reinbacher is a way better prospects than Mailloux and Barron and we should not refrain from drafting him as he will be a clear upgrade on what we already have.
4. BPA... If Dvorsky ends up better than Suzuki or Dach we will be very happy and will figure things out then... Same as 3.
5. BPA... If Benson ends up a 90 points player we won't care about his size. Same as 3 and 4.
I guess we will see.

I agree regarding Leonard. His scoring may not translate. However, even if it does not translate, you still have a very useful player on your team. Organizations always really like this argument. I think Smith is gone before we pick. Michkov is not going to happen with the Russia situation and other issues. Dvorsky had a great tournament and may be a great pick, but I think it will be Wood. It makes too much sense.

Is Reinbacher as good as Seider at the same age?

I am sure people will take this opportunity to throw the stat sheet at you but it doesn't matter as Seider's D+1 season was incredible. I think that Seider will be the better NHLer but D men are so difficult to project that nobody can really make a definitive claim on this topic.

If you're going to pick someone with skating deficiencies, I'd rather he be 6'4". The rest of the toolbox though ? I can't see many teams passing over that, at least not 16 of them. Really makes you want to punch Hextall right in the face when you think about it.
Habs wouldn't draft him anyways. If they draft a poor skater the player must not have skill and/or must be small.

Besides Benson, I'm assuming the Habs are going to sign the player they pick with their pick and play him in the NHL this upcoming season.

No Benson. This guy gets it!

Would be nice if people stopped saying this lol
I get it, we already had the discussion. We won’t agree, just move on. Fact remains he outproduced him significantly in a better league. And it also remains that Seider’s development curve was not ordinary.
