Lets not forget Reinbacher is playing in a pro league and his breakout is pretty damn impressive for a kid IMO, how good would he look with that pass playing in the OHL? I'd say his best skill for now is his gap control so ya, defensive reads is kind of in the same realm. He has a lot of untapped offensive potential IMO. I'm a big fan of his game.

Yeah good point... I like him a lot too. I have no problem with him at 5 if they think he can be a 25min a night breakout machine.

To put things into perspective,

Reinbacher would probably be in the same tier as draft year Nemec or draft year Jiricek. I am not sure we could comfortably state that one is better than the other. Its a matter of preference more than a difference in talent.

I don't see any problem with having three good top 6C. At worst its very good trade bait to acquire a missing pieces
I would rather draft Smith or Leonard...
Smith...great hands in tight spaces, terrific edge work, wonderful passer, amazing instincts.
Leonard...power forward with skill, speed and grit...character guy.

I really like michkov and would be willing to take the risk at 5 but if Habs land at 2, you almost have to go with fantilli or Carlsson
Pass on Michkov if he isn't in Buffalo for physical assessments and in Nashville for the draft.

If we wish to draft Dvorsky as a top six centre, we will basically saying to Dach,
"you are playing wing"...but happens to Dach
if he wants to play centre...what?...on the 3rd line? He's too good for the 3rd line.
I think players care more about line mates than position tbh. I'm 99% sure Dach would rather play wing to Suzuki, Caufield, Dubois, etc than centre a line with non elite players. At the end of the day, it's all about opportunity

My worry about Reinbacher is his upside. Picking a top 4 defenseman at 5 doesn't interest me and think it's a very safe pick. If management think he's a top pairing defenseman then okay. At 5 the Habs need a top 3 forward or top pairing defenseman. The prospect pool has a lot of decent players and it's time to take a swing for a star!

I have no worry about his upside. Dmen like him don't grow on trees.

Possible, I'm admittedly higher than most on Ritchie. I still think it's possible for us to pick both Reinbacher and Benson, although now it might mean grabbing Reinbacher first.
Benson might become the faller in this draft...injured at the end of the season...if he falls to our Florida pick at 17...I would run to the stage to call his name.

He would look good beside Ghule or Matheson in 2 years.

Before the OHL playoffs, Benson was 5th on most lists ahead of Will Smith. I can't see him falling to 17 due to an injury that isn't serious and Smith and all those playing in the u18's piling up the points against lesser competition.

My dream scenario (apart from winning the lottery of course):

5th or 6th : Michkov (Him and Bedard are exceptional talents. 100 + pts potential).

17th: Oliver Moore (In the shadow of the Perrault - Smith -Leonard line. Would bring something different than Suzuki).
I strongly doubt Moore is there a 17. Its not impossible but i think the most likeliest outcome for him is 6-10

Oh for sure. For my money, I'd say the lowest he could fall is around 11. I could see Barlow, Leonard, Reinbacher, Moore and Dvorsky being picked before him.

Otto Stenberg has had a puzzling draft season at best, but I'd sure consider him with our early second rounder if he ever makes it there. I can really see him turn into a Carl Hagelin /Lehkonen type in the NHL.

I do like the old saying: "a player never played too many years in the AHL, but he might have played too few." Not sure why Gorton doesn't.

Harris and Guhle seem to be ready to develop at the NHL level without needing to be sent down to the A. It remains to be seen for Slaf, Xhekaj, and Barron. Heineman too.

RHP, Ylonen, and Kovacevic have put in their AHL time and as re ready for their next stage of development to be in the NHL. It remains to be seen about Primeau.
Harris played 4 year of University hockey before jumping to the NHL. In a decent team, we would not have made it to the NHL.

We also traded 4 Defenseman last year. So that open up multiple spot for rookie this year. Pretty sure, Harris and Ghule would not have made the team with Weber ,Petry and Chariot still in the team.

Ok but I'm just saying, for his development's sake, he seems to be learning well at the NHL level.

They showed stats of fastest speed recorded in the NHL this year on RDS few weeks back... guess who was no.2? Our own Ghule, ahead of Mcjesus.

It's like saying a supercar is faster than a F1 on a straight line. It's true, they are. Yet, on a track, they are not even close and McDavid can beat Guhle from the outside quite easily right now (but he can't beat Makar/Dahlin)

In the top-7 of a strong draft, I'm looking to grab a core piece. Now, a thought exercise that I like is to imagine that there's an expansion draft in 3 years and you have to protect in the 4F-3D-1G format, with every player being available. That should be, by definition, your core. Right now I'd have:

Caufield - Dach - Suzuki - ?
Guhle - Hutson - ?
?

Contenders for that final F spot would be Slaf and Dubois (potentially). Contenders for that final D spot would probably be Barron, Mailloux, Harris, Xhekaj.

Now, who is available at 5-6-7, that would realistically take that final F or D spot? Do you see Will Smith or Zach Benson being a better core piece than Slaf/Dubois/other? I do, but past these 2 I don't think any other forward is. On the other hand, Reinbacher easily fits in that 3rd defenseman spot. What do you think?

We need an elite forward.
Everytime we go for Elite forward with our top picks they turn out to become not so elite and most often the defenseman picked after end up becoming good players.
Defenseman are way easier to project than forward. Especially elite defenseman like Reinbacher. People don't see it because they dream of the next star forward all the time.

Its like saying a supercar is slow because their time is slightly worse on a lap, in your example ;)
