What if this draft is indeed 2003 but Michkov is Zherdev?

Carter Brown Parise Getzlaf taken in the 10s.
do you want me to counter with 50 other WHAT IF past scenarios that make Michkov the elite pick?

For one, Michkov is putting up Ovi like numbers here. Not NIK ZHERDEV numbers. Way to generalize.

Unfortunately, the Habs will go on a useless winning streak to end the season, and finish 10th to last. “Character” finish.
Not with Primeau in nets! ;)

It will come down to the interview I suspect. If they deem him to have attitude issues, like they did with Wright, then they'll take a pass.

I dunno if Id pass on this kind of talent just cus a kid's a little arrogant at age 18. He'd have to praise Putin as his God or something to pass on that.

Too slow, does not fight.
please tell me youre joking

Here me out.

Assuming the Habs draft 4-7th, so no: Bedard, no Fantili, no Carlsson.... and chances are (I think) the Habs arent getting a top 4 pick in 2024 as they get better.

The Habs ONLY chance at getting top elite talent is Michkov this summer. They have 2 very centres going forward in Suzuki and Dach, although unfortunately not elite. If they miss out on Michkov, theyd land either Smith or Benson most probably, and yes, they could be VERY good too, but a tier below Michkov's talent, imo.

Cup winners dont win with very good players, they win with ELITE talent (STL being the only exception really). EVEN if they land PLD, hes not "elite". Its another Suzuki with a big contract, which eventually leads to another playoff team that never contends with the big dogs.

If they pick 5th, pray he falls a spot. The Habs need MICHKOV.... I dont care if hes 2-3 years away from coming here. The Habs arent contending for at least 4 years anyway.
1. we may be drafting 8 - 10 at this rate.

2. My gut still tells me Mishkov is going 2nd, 3rd or 4th.

But I would be over the moon if we got him. And I also don't care if he even comes in 5 years. Having Mishkov from 23 years old to 38 would be fine by me.

I mean they were on a 7 game winless streak less than 2 weeks ago, and now theyre putting Primeau in nets tonight..... I guarantee Hughes/Gorton are doing everything to lose now.

I doubt very seriously any GM picks a player that high who may not come for many years, if at all.
Don't get me wrong I love this player and his upside but most GM's know they have a limited amount of time to get their franchise turned around and competitive. A guy like Will Smith could help the Habs much sooner.
It's a tough call either way.

but the players aren't.

having Dach bach and the lighter schedule is what worries me.

We had one of the worst teams in the league last year. Yet we beat the best team in the league 10-1 in the last game of the season. Why? They were resting their players for the playoffs and those that did play played more to not get injured. Our last game of the year this year is against Boston. And, there may be many other games where teams play not to get hurt. Whereas most of our players are playing to establish themselves in the NHL - i.e. for their livelihoods.

Will Smith will likely be at Boston College for 2 years; I highly doubt he graduates after a year in the NCAA. I'd much rather wait a year or two more for a franchise-altering talent à la Michkov than have Smith.

With the uncertainty in Russia these days I would be careful to draft a player who likes playing in the KHL. He actually likes playing in Russia enough to sign a longterm contract. Be careful drafting this player.

tbf though,

I actually do like Smith quite a bit, even with how generic and boring his name is.

He could become a very very good NHL Player.

Russia is persona non grata right now.

We would be very toxic for drafting a Russian and it would not be acceptable.

We will likely draft a polite well mannered North American character boi.
I won't blame any Russian player because of the barbarism of their government. Michkov is signed to 3 more years I think, that's the turnoff for me

this is a very bi-polar team, one day theyre losing 9-2 to FLA, the other theyre winning against playoff teams. But its a tough remaining schedule.... I only see wins vs DET and maybe NYI. Take a look:

PHI with Primeau
FLA
CAR
DET
WSH
TOR
NYI
BOS

Slafkovsky - Dach - Michkov
Dubois - Suzuki - Caufield

love it
problem is you cant keep all that talent on top of Guhle, Hutson, Mailloux, Harris, (UFA goalie)

In 5 years theyd be way over the cap.... PLD contract would be too much a problem. I pass on him.

Habs

It's going to be a long year

no worries this team can't even lose in right, they will finish 9th and Michkov won't be in the equation. That being said I would not take him anyways, I don't think he's remotely generational only Bedard may be this player in the draft nobody else. We will draft another plumber

Id be thrilled to draft him if Michkov is gone, but I feel he'd be another Suzuki. You dont win Cups with Suzukis.

And then what?

You know it!

I wouldn't be surprised if we draft Dalibor Dvorský.

(At least he has a cool name, I guess)
