Its still awful value to spend a first on a goaltender when at any moment theres like 6 good goaltenders and a bunch of rotating chair. The conversion on goaltenders is incredibly low overall and if you dont have a great one, it doesnt matter which good or average one you have, the team around it is gonna be more important.

We are likely going to draft a top 6 foward and a top pairing D with our first 2 picks, if we add that to our young core + top prospects, I think our depth is great enough to think about a top goaltending prospect with a late first. A goaltender like Bjarnason could pretty well be BPA at that point. Im a big Dobes fan, but I dont like the idea to put all our eggs in one basket.

I appreciate the insight in this thread, so thx guys. I'm wondering who out of Arizona, SJ, Chicago, AZ, Columbus or Vancouver would consider a D or winger in the top 5? Also wondering if any one of them passes on Michkov.

Vancouver selecting Pavel Pure v2. makes sense to me - with Kuzmenko and Podkolzin, they have the support system required.

I guess I'm asking because maybe a Carlson or Smith falls to the habs at 6 ...
imagine if habs finish a spot ahead of canucks and michkov is still on the board?
let the game of chicken begin

Only Columbus or Vancouver will take Michkov.

No one is taking a D top 5. Reinbacher would need a Seider like world championships to maybe threaten that and I don't know if Austria will even be there

The only thing for me about Smith. Another right handed center (Suzuki, Owen Beck).
Is it a issu for us?

I am kind of expecting Michkov to fall outside the top 10. Tarasenko was seen as a top 3/5 player for the draft and fell to 16.

Tarasenko was not viewed as borderline generational as Michkov is. Far far from it

If he's available after 4 or so, half of the league would try to move up

This lines up with my thinking, I wonder if we’d be willing to package a couple of picks (like our 2nd) to move up into the late 1st to get a goalie.

I guess it's terminology.. Solid goaltender in the sense that they are going to give you above average goaltending every night, they might not actively steal games at the frequency Price did.. but they won't lose you games. Giving you that stability every season.

There isn't very many of those guys in the league.. right now it's a variance every year as to who is gonna have a good year vs. who isn't.. and then those guys don't hold up in the play-offs.

I'd say Bjarnason could get to the Oettinger tier, for a comparable.
Would be nice if Bjarnason could get there considering Canada is currently a goalie graveyard.

Oh boy what a goal. Finally when he wants to skate, he can skate. I guess he typically looks slower thanks to constantly slowing the game down. What a player.

Yeah, I don't follow a lot of hockey outside of the NHL so I've seen only a few of Benson's games but I never understood that knock against the kid. He's a very good skater. If we don't win the lottery, I'd be more than ecstatic with Benson as our first pick. I'd lean toward Michkov if he's still there but Benson is a great prospect and in the long run, may even turn out better than the Russian kid.

You just haven't seen Michkov much either.

It has been more than a year. I remember he was something else at the U18s. Just as skilled as Bedard. But I don't know what curve his development took since then. The Benson I see now is almost as good as the Michkov I saw more than a year ago.

We have to get ahead of SJ and Vancouver.

Make it so we don't have to figure out who is best in the next tier.

Also, I don't think we need to force a defenseman at any pick.. We might not be as bad in 2024 but we won't be in the play-offs and next year is looking very stacked for defenseman. Zayne Parekh as a RHD in particular.

If you’re watching Bjarnsson play for Brandon you might want to check out Charlie Elick #7, RHD for the Wheat Kings. He’s a rookie and was taken 3rd OA in the Bantam Draft. He’s very raw but I think there’s potential there snd hopefully a little bit of offense, too. Just someone to keep an eye on.
