2023 NHL Draft situation

Hawks are primed to finish last in NHL at this point

What is farthest they could fall as a result of lotto potentially in worst case scenario? 3rd or 4th overall?

If I am wrong and Kady Luck smiles on us in the LottonDraw that we do end up with Bedard, then whikevtgatcwoukd be franchise changing, and while he woukd start in the NHL nextcsesdon, the depth at forward around him Next Season is so bad,he alone will not bexablevtobbe Geberational immediately...

The Hawksxwoukd need to add complimentary vet forwards that can help the yutes=Bedard and Reichel to thrive and not have tge pressure to save tge team alkby thenselves=which is almost impossible.

Sure tge Hawjsxwill have the x$21million saved from T and K no longer onthe books to spend for Productive vet forward free agentsxto surround Bedard and Reichel so that they are nit overwhelmed by tge load out solely on them....But IF over his3 yr EKC Bedard by yr 3 has exploded into Generational production and Reichel also benefitting from that...thennthey will have to be paid big bucks on next contracts and sovanybofcthe $21miklionnused to add competentvandvproductive top six free agent forwards will need tobexpirecso tgat Bedard gets a max cobtract after his ELC ends ...That $21million couldxsee a huge chunk required then to be allocated to Bedard ...and Hawks then coukd soonbe back into another cap crunch and debate again on how much do you allocate to 1 or 2 star or suoerstar players before it forces depth problems retaining talent to spread out over the rest of the team.

It is always a thorny issue balancing out a team to the cap limits.

For now thus problem is a long way off...but while therexwillbexax3 yr "cheap" wibdow to employ Bedard, once tgat ends his team will be facing a huge allocation to him on thatc2nd cobtract. Sure you want to pay it if he is worth it...but it will cause problems after he gets tgat huge 2nd contract for paying everyone else on the team you want to be as deep as possible.

I know...worry about that down the line only....for know just Hope we have this future problem ...just Hope we land Bedard.

Under the new rules for the Ebtry Draft Lottery a team can now only win the lottery 2 times in a 5 yr period...

Does this apply only to the Top Pick.....or akso to the 2nd pick which is determined by tge 2nd Lotto draw.

For Example:

Hawks finish last...bit get bumped down 1after both lotteries completed..

Does that scenario mean Hawksxcan only win either a 1st or a 2nd overall only 1ctimevover next 4 lotto draws?
Can you imagine Hawks finish last both this season and next and in a horrible scenario get only the #2overall in both the 2023 and 2024 Drafts abd be prevented from getting any higher than a 3rd overall tge next 3 drafts even if they finish dead last again or 2ndvkast in those 3 years?

Having three picks in the first 33 slots of this draft should be fantastic. May even get a fourth if we can play the TDL right.
I was wondering if with our current & future draft capital we might want to mortgage some of it to maybe trade up for another top 10 pick? I mean if this draft is one of the best top heavy ones with talent, why not get 2 cracks at difference makers? Not sure if trades like that happen in the NHL as I normally only follow the TDL in NBA, NFL, & MLB.

Tj Oshie might be a good fit to add a vet and you might actually get an asset to take the contract if the Caps want to shed salary and get younger. He seems like a great guy to have in the room for young players. Really liked what I saw from him earlier in the year helping along Hendrix Lapierre. He has a 10 team no trade list though.

Here he is after Lapierre got his first goal.

Edit: Damn.Time flies that was last season

Keep that sack of shit away from this team.

OK - this is going to sound stupid (most likely because it is) - but this is just meant to be food for thought so "hear" me out.

Would getting Bedard hurt the rebuild? I'll pause a minute to give you time to stop the incredulous laughing.

The premise of the question is that the rebuild will take several years of top-10 draft picks to provide the players and the timing of ELC contracts before the Hawks would move into legitimate contender status and be in position to supplement the young core group with high end free agents to complete the rebuild.

Bedard will immediately step into the NHL as an 18 year old and it is not hyperbole to believe he will have an immediate impact on his team. Would his impact be enough to raise the Hawks 2024/25 draft picks from top-5 to somewhere in the 10-15 range? If it would - wouldn't that cut the rebuild short of acquiring the numbers of high level picks needed to complete the rebuild for sustained success?

With Fantilli most likely playing college again next year - the Hawks will be in "good" position to get the #1 pick in 2024 - whoever that ends up being. Ideally they are bad again in 2024 to be in the running for the #1 pick in 2025 too.

It's kind of like asking the question - OK, now that we got Bedard - now what?

Just something to think about.
I was wondering slightly differently. If we draft our Toews/Kane next summer and other in the next, then did we trade away our Keith and Seabrook in Debrincat and Dach trades.

I’m thinking they end up with two more first rounders and maybe another second or third...before all the dust settles...
1st overall
two picks between 17-20
TBs 1st
33rd overall
another second rounder
TBs 2nd
65th overall
DALs 3rd
97th overall

10 picks in the top 100

It takes a long time to rebuild. Bare minimum five years from getting your first piece based on following the path other teams have taken.

Take NJ for example. Drafted Hischier in 2017, finally look competitive in 22-23.

Five high first round picks in between, six total draft years.

Assume last year was the start, 2027 would be the final draft before being competitive again should the Hawks follow the same timeline.

Colorado’s path to the cup was roughly five years since bottoming out, but they already had a few pieces that were key to the cup run.

takes a lot of luck too, like hitting on some mid and late round picks like Hawks did w Buff and Hammer. Plus sometimes a goalie just seems to come out of nowhere.

Certainly helps, but arguably not necessary. Colorado largely rode their multiple (5) high first round picks and filled in with savvy trades and UFAs.

Hitting on lower picks is critical for keeping the machine rolling once you have a legitimate core in place though.

Obviously Tampa took more of the route you described, but I think the Hawks are more in a position to try and build around five top-10 picks like the Avs did.

One is in place so far, Korchinski.

Nazar should have been a top 10 pick

Guys like Savoie, Geekie and Mateychuk going ahead of him is a massive L for those teams

Sure, hopefully he pans out into an absolute stud and it shaves a year off the rebuild. So maybe competitive in 2026 if all the high 1sts hit and Davidson avoids the Dachs and Kotkaniemis

Honestly I want to see the Hawks get Bedard just for the chaos that will occur, already hilarious seeing people get so angry by just the thought of it.
