2023 NHL Draft situation

So it seems if a team between 12-16 wins the 1st lottery, they'd get pick 2-6 (depending on their original position), and the Hawks would be awarded 1st overall no matter who won the 2nd drawing.
Very interesting.

So there's technically multiple outcomes which could result in Chicago landing Bedard.

Long story short, let's finish last. It is advantageous and especially this year.
Yep. So far (only 2 seasons) under the current lottery rules, the last place team has won the lottery. That said we have crap luck historically in the lottery. Maybe we can luck out and be the first team to retain pick one because a team 12-16 won the lottery.

I get nervous flashbacks of the 2003-2004 lottery which led to... Ovechkin, Malkin, BARKER!?

Wanting any position but last to win the lottery is the dumbest take possible for many reasons.

Winning the lottery isn’t guaranteed in any position but if we are last and win Bedard it does not count as one of our two lottery wins (since we did not improve our draft position, only maintained it).

If we fall back a spot then it wasn’t meant to be but at the worst we have the next few drafts to potentially win the lottery

That was a double whammy back then. Not only did we drop on that lottery, then was the lock out and the Hawks sucked at the time but everyone wanted a crack at Crosby so the had that weighted ball crap. Hawks picked 7 and got Skille.

Yeah you're taking fiddy's post too seriously.

If you're talking about nightmare scenarios from prior drafts those involving the Hawks are bad but not the most relevant because the Hawks may have at least one and possibly two more drafts where they pick three in the first round. The example to avoid is the 2015 Bruins with those three mid-first-round picks. One of them turned out ok, but to look at the guys still available late in the first round and even some guys in the second, OUCH.

BTW, the Hawks traded their first in 2015 to the Yotes (who picked Nick Merkley at 30) in exchange for A. Vermette, and their second to the Flyers (Leafs used this pick to select Jeremy Bracco at 61) in exchange for K. Timmonen.

My dream scenario is that we draft Bedard at #1

Then we trade 2023 Tampa 1st + 2024 Tampa 1st + Lukas Reichel to move up and take Andrew Cristall.

Reichel and the Tampa 1sts to move into the top 10 in this draft would be quite a move. Walking away with two elite young players from this draft would be huge, adding them to Korchinski and Nazar, would be huge.

The Tampa picks are likely middle-six depth types unless you get really lucky. People like Zawaski are talking about Reichel's ceiling being a good second-liner or elite third-liner on a contender. It's a lot to move, but the Hawks absolutely need to prioritize collecting as much elite top-line talent as possible.

I'm guessing I'll be in the minority for agreeing with you, not necessarily agreeing on the Cristal part.

Bedard, Cristall, Nazar, Korchinski is an amazing core to build around.

You get a 1-2 punch down the middle, an elite winger, and hopefully a top pairing D man.

Maybe Michkov will fall a bit and a team is willing to make the swap allowing the Hawks to add Michkov to Bedard. :)
Cristall is Bedard's best friend.

I'm sure he'd much prefer that than Michkov.

Either way, KD will pull that trigger if the opportunity arises. He did it with Dach. He'll do it again, if it makes sense.

Bedard and Michkov could be the Hawks version of Crosby and Malkin. What a fun next 10-15 years that would be.

If Davidsion can pick up another 2 1sts...you potentially then have 3 low firsts you can package to move up if Michkov falls due to the political stuff.

I just traded Kane for the Stars’ and Ranger’s 2023 1st’s and the Ranger’s 2024 1’st at 50% retained while taking on Goodrow and Reaves in NHL23. Pretty sure it will happen based on that.

I hope you get that I am completely not serious on this.

Jan 8 - Home - Vs - Calgary
Jan 12 - Home - Vs - Colorado
Jan 14 - Home - Vs - Seattle
Jan 17 - Home - Vs - Buffalo

I don't see us picking up many points in our next 12 games.

Then we have a week off.

It is during that time that I hope Davidson trades Kane/Toews and anyone else because our next 2 game are potentially winnable...

Feb 7 - Home - Vs - Anaheim
Feb 10 - Home - Vs - Arizona

Win or lose, KD will always have my respect for tanking so hard in the year of Bedard.

Inspirational work from the young GM.

I agree as well, easily.

I think a top 15 pick this year is worth 2-3 1st late first round quality assets.

Why im hoping we can find a trade for Kane if it comes to it, where he extends as well so that we can get a higher 1st.

Actually acquiring a no conditions 1st for next years(2024) wouldn’t hurt either
