2023 NHL Draft situation

It's a moot point anyway because they were talking about Alex Nylander not William.

Anyone got a retort to the $10M player problem though? Bueller? Bueller? Anyone?

I need to see more evidence that it's not a problem beyond 2 runs.

I did a poor job of explaining my thoughts.

It's not McDavid's fault at all. It's not about him.

There is something to $10M players though as through 2020 they did not win a playoff series, and the only teams to win playoff series with a $10M player are Montreal in 2021 and Edmonton in 2022. Maybe the dam is cracking with this.
Florida, LA and the NYR all won playoff series this calendar year.

Contending teams generally have a few really solid contracts that help push them over the edge.

If McDavid was a $12.5m player getting paid $12.5m, then there is an argument to be had that he is hurting the team just because it's a lot of cap for a single player.

But McDavid is sniffing 2 points per game this year. His contract is a steal and he is far from the reason for Edmonton's issues.

If we could get Bedard and he plays like a $20m player who is only being payed 12-15m per, then that is a damn good thing for us.

McDavid and draisaitl’s contracts are steals

Are we really having this argument while Seth jones is signed here for the next 7 seasons?

By the time they get past their elc, does it even matter whether it’s Fantilli making 11% or Bedard making 15% of the cap in terms of contending?

I was not expecting the Ducks to beat Edmonton, wow. Even though they've played 3 more games than the Hawks, Hawks are officially the worst team in the league.

Just being realistic. Was telling people this team was bad when they were in a playoff spot. Calls em likes I sees em.
No matter how bad every team usually goes on a little spurt, in hawks case their will prob be a stretch against equally mediocre teams plus w Hawks juggernaut offense they are likely to see a lot of backup goalies

I was looking at Tankathon, and was reading the draft rules and was surprised by something.

I thought the NHL changed the rules a year or so ago where a team can only win a lottery pick twice in a 5 year span, but that's actually wrong. A team cannot IMPROVE their draft position.

So if the Hawks are the worst team in the league and wins 1st or 2nd overall, it doesn't affect the possibility of winning future lotteries because the Hawks wouldn't have gained in draft position.

If Hawks end up at 2nd, one of those 2 opportunities would only occur if we moved up to 1st, not if we stayed at 2nd overall.

So Hawks are gonna win Bedard, then finish in 11th place each of the next two seasons, winning the lottery in the process, and being bumped up to 1st each time. Three consecutive 1st overall picks!!!

I'm not sure if that's true.

The rule is that: Teams cannot win the lottery more than twice in a five-year period.

If Chicago picks 1st overall, even if they're not "moving up" because they're already last, that still counts as winning the lottery.

Your link is broken, but here is an article that aligns with cms. Everything you need to know about the 2022 NHL draft lottery

“Beginning this season, no team will be able to move up the draft board by winning a lottery more than two times in a five-year period”

Edit: I also see articles saying simply 2/5 max. So I don’t know.

Edit 2: Cms appears correct. NHL announces changes to Draft Lottery format

(3) Limit on Teams Winning a Lottery Draw
No single team will be able to advance in the Draft order by reason of winning a Lottery Draw more than two (2) times in any five (5) year period. This limitation will not affect a Club's ability to retain its presumptive Draft position in any Draft Lottery, nor would it preclude the possibility of the Club moving down in Draft Order to the extent other Clubs advance by reason of winning the Lottery Draws”

Good to know the lotto rules.

So hypothetical situation...

We win the '23 and '24 lottos so we can not win another lotto for 3 years.

In '25 we finish 4th worst. We can't move up but can't be pushed back either so we draft 4th. (unless someone from 5th-16th wins the lotto and pushes us back)

If the Hawks finish last AND win the lotto both in 23 and 24 it doesn't count against them, based on what I read. It only counts if you improve your draft position. So if they jump from 2nd to 1st, that counts, but if they finish last and still get first it doesn't count against them.

Schedule really softens up in the next month with multiple games against the yotes and cbj, and games vs. the blues, Nashville, flyers, sharks…

Now would be a good time to trade Kane and whoever else has value.

I didn't remember LA and NYR winning a playoff series, and I thought Barkov's extension didn't start until this season so it does look like the dam is breaking on the $10M player regard.

Apologies for using an outdated argument that is no longer valid.
lol it's a dumb argument. TB just own how many series with multiple 9.5mil players. I'm sure that 500k is a HUGE difference though.
